Quote (Jlombardi13 @ 22nd June 2006 06:02) the Mayan calendar is nearly over (OMG we're gonna die in 2012). I was actually about to mention that. My mother actually thought that everything would end at that point, and it seems she wasn't the only one. Whole cults have sprung up over that. But what some of you mentioned is right. How does our way of measuring time matter? Why does it? When people talk about "the end of the world," they generally mean the end of everything. So, we couldn't simply go by Earth's years, months, or days. Plus, these are things we simply made up. We could've decided one day was twice or thrice the length we decided to make it. Isn't it a bit presumptuous(forgive me, I'm sure I misspelled it) of our species to think that an act of the god(s) is determined by a timeframe created by mere mortals? Sorta funny, when you think about it. -------------------- "If everything's a dream, don't wake me..." |

It'll happen, all joking aside. Discount religeon and doomsday prophecies, and it'll still happen sooner or later.

Quote (gozaru~ @ 8th June 2006 12:32) not necessarily -- the english term "armageddon" comes from the hebrew words חר מגידן, or "mount megido," and refer to the tel at megiddo valley, about a stone's throw and a half from mt carmel, where according to hebrew tradition elijah called down the fire from heaven to light the waterlogged kindle. the only time the term is even mentioned in the Bible is in the apocalypse of john, in which he refers to a "gathering of armies" against the Lord at armageddon. indeed the Scriptural account is quite vague in reference to the actual catalytic events of the endtimes. I'm surprised that you didn't point out that 'apocalypse' doesn't mean 'the end of the world.' The word means the revelation of secret things; 'John's apocalypse' refers to the set of secrets revealed to John. There are other apocalypses in the Bible, like the one to Daniel (maybe only in the apocryphal additions to that book, though). Quote according to Scripture, not even the Son Himself knows when he will be directed to return and set into motion the realisation of the symbolically-decribed events spoken of in john's apocalypse. all these people with their idiot theories of being privy to the exact date/time that the world would end (a church around here had a day-by-day countdown to the 1/1/2000, when they were sure the "apocalypse" was coming) are seriously deluding themselves. This is probably the first time in the history of the CoN when I can just quote what you say, add that I agree, and be done. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

I believe that nature will destroy us, I think global warming is natural, and not caused by us. there will be another ice age, and we will all freeze to death, unless we move to mars as steven hawking suggests

At a normal rate. Otherwise, we wouldn't enjoy the (universally-speaking) mild climate we Earthlings have for so many millenia. Actually, we wouldn't be enjoying anything, since it's vital for life more complex than single-celled little critters. However, due to all the general nastiness we've been putting into the air, global warming has increased dramatically. Second, I live in Kentucky, and it's *insanely hot* right now. Your local weather doesn't speak for the whole world. However, if the weather is a lot colder, that too is a sign of global warming (scientists have said that we'll actually have more blizzards and whatnot, the farther on this gets). Basically, the whole world's climate is just really messed up right now. I doubt that will destroy the world, though. Maybe us, but not everything. This planet's survived ice ages, mass extinctions, and giant space rocks. I doubt we humans can take her under. Well, unless we blow ourselves and the planet up before we become extinct, which is always a possibility. -------------------- "If everything's a dream, don't wake me..." |

one day day there wil be an apocalypse... but not one like that crap the bible tells us. no, my friends, we humans will likly destroy ourselfes. We humans have proven true the century's that the only thing we are really good at is war and destruction...( damn my grammar sucks)

I disagree with you, zeigfried.
I think humanity is capable of creating heartbreaking beauty. I believe that we are capable of creating marvels of science and intellect and art. We can wage war, but I highly doubt your claim that that is "what we do best". -------------------- Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people - and kill them. ~Pacifist Badge, 1978 |

I was reading that scientists have discovered that about 45 mmillion years ago, the ice caps' water was above 70 degrees. It only froze over about 15 million years ago. So it's a natural cycle that's happening, though we are ruining the earth (especially us in Jersey). -------------------- Can you pull down the dawn?
