What importance do you place on your postcount, and on the postcount of others?

When viewing your own postcount, do you feel that your opinions and thoughts are taken more seriously the higher the number? Do you feel that your post count reflects your "status" at a forum?

When viewing others postcounts, do you think that a high number implies that they are more knowledgeable on the subject matter of the forum, or that their opinions carry more weight?

Do you make posts to boost your count numbers? If so, why?

Haha I just came from the German spam thread. Good timing, Hamedo! thumbup.gif

Um. As for my views on postcount, I really don't take it too seriously, and I rarely use it to judge members here. However, if I see that every time a certain member posts, it is with something insignificant and off-topic ("lols s3phir0th is t3h r0x0rzzzz!!!11!!!!!oneone121!shift!"), and then I see that the person has like 500+ posts, I start to take their posts less seriously. By the same token, if someone makes really long, well-thought-out posts frequently, and they have 1000+ posts, then I start to respect them more (e.g. RuneLancer, for one). I don't purposely look at post count to make opinions about people, but sometimes it just naturally happens (spamz0r vs. dedicated member).

Idk. I don't really care about my own post count. I post when I have something useful to contribute, not to boost my post count. I'd rather have people form an opinion about me based on the quality of what I'm saying rather than how frequently I say things. But that's just me. Boosting your post count to a few thousand by posting nothing but spam is another good technique.

I used to be more preoccupied with postcount and e-peen measuring than I am now - nowadays I only tend to post when I feel there's a discussion I'm interested in (though this is becoming more infrequent than I'd like), or feel I can say something vaguely intelligent about (though I'm not saying I achieve that too often). Basically, I post if I feel I can contribute, but I occasionally throw out a 'HELLO ME NOT DEAD' post in a greetings thread. I think upon joining CoN especially (my first forum, I'd just turned 15) I was more concerned with establishing myself as a decent member of the community than I am now, possibly because I'm arrogant enough to think I'm pretty damn hip. cool.gif

Now, with other members, I don't really care much. Certain people make way over 1,000 posts in a year or two and contribute little if anything. Likewise, though rarer, there's usually a few new-ish members who manages to contribute well outside of threads about Tifa's boobs.

As Caesar said, the post count - post quality ratio is handy for gauging who's posts I can just go ahead and scroll past. Likewise, a person with a high number of quality posts signifies the sort of emminent member of the community I'd generally respect more than, say, even a newbie that posts pretty well. Postcounts - good for first impressions, otherwise a handy little reference point. You get everything from people with an overwhelming number of posts that might as well consist of 'POST COUNT +++ BOLLOCKS' and people who post extremely infrequently but extremely well. To conclude, at first, to be honest, postcounts are a way of gauging who's toes you should avoid stepping on, but overall, they're pretty irrelevant. It's quality, not quantity, maing.

I remember when a couple of new people (who shall remain nameless; at least one of them is still here) first came to the board and posted up a storm, and there was a discussion of removing the post count from being displayed in order to remove the impetus for such behavior. happy.gif

I don't really care about my post count unless it hits a weird number, like a palindrome or something. As for others...I guess a really low post count (< 100) tells me that the person is still kinda probationary--they might just be floating through, so trying to keep track of who they are is pointless. I try a little harder to remember people who look like they're going to stay. But I also roll my eyes when I see a high post count for someone who posts in every thread, usually to say incredibly inane things, or makes up stupid threads, and is generally obnoxious with the obvious goal of raising their count.

As a lot of people probably know by now and a few of you were around for, when I signed up at the CoN in '01, Post Count was everything. I wanted to see what the next rank was or be one of the people to discover what the mystery, unrevealed ranks might be. I spammed like a savage and had my post count reset, then spammed some more.

Around that time I dissapeared for a while, grew up a little (only a bit.) and came back, and suddenly, posting for the sake of posting stopped happening. If I was posting anything, it was to say something that would at least attribute to the forums or thread in question. Not all my posts are well thought-out, and I'm clearly not as educated or knowledgeable as some of the other forum goers, a lot of whom have lower post count than I, from posting fewer times or by being newer to the CoN, so that being said,
the post count really doesn't define anyone else for me either.

What gives you credibility in my books is the ability to make good, thoughtful posts that everyone else can follow, bonus points if you've got a sense of humor.

Well, hard to pass by: I first noticed the strange german spam thread then the newest in General Topisc was this.

You can't imagine how many times I don't post when I have something to say (Something that could have no impact or that could irritate someone). When you subtract these, 1/5 of my posts are left. So I could probably have 1500 posts right now, but I really don't care about that.

However the post count can be used in some way:
- "lolz SEphirohts Hair is so coo!!!" / 50 Posts
- "Buy the new motorola xxx for only $49,99!!" / 1 Post
- "German spam!!" / 1 Post
- "Don't double post. Perhaps you should check our forum rules again? -R51" / 3500 Posts
- And of course the normal kind of members we have here / ~150-2000 posts

Well, that doesn't mean anyone can't become an ative member without posting stupid message like: "LOL that wus a good 1".

In other words, it can tell me if a member is active or not, if that member is older than the average user and... that's pretty much it.

Post counts seem to only mean a couple things to me.

1. If they have a higher post count, then chances are they've been active on the forum for a while.

2. If they're post number is high, then chances are they havn't been a complete idiot on the site, and theirfore have something worth reading.
Which is not to say that low post counts=stupid posters. But I tend to ignore new posters that only come to rant about Sepheroth's hair. And I especially usually turn from posters that do things like try to sell cellphones.

When I first came to CoN (my first forum) I'm sure I annoyed a great many people in my quest to gain ranks. Not necessarily because my posts were "Teh Suxxorz", but because they were short and almost always involved thread necromancy in the FFT forum. That said, I think that I am much better now at not doing such things.

I think I tend towards the general opinion that those with higher post counts have been here a while and have something useful to say.
I don't think it's even totally a conscious judgement on my part.

......I kinda wish I could've frozen my post count at 999.

I notice everyone who's posted here has had at least 500 posts, and are therefore much more respected members of CoN.

No. It's not like that. (In general, nothing against the people in this thread).

I find it amusing to go through the archives and read all the locked topics, because it's often funny why they got locked. And what I also see is that a lot of the spammers have quasi-high post counts. That's for one reason, they're spammers. High post count does not reflect respectability IMO, nor should it.

My own post count means nothing to me, obviously. I only post when I have something to say, and even then I sometimes don't. xD;

Other people's post counts don't really matter to me either, except when I see someone who's like, "SEPH'ROTH RAWKZ!11Eleventy!!1!" with a high post count. Then I think that person must be incredibly bored.

I, being pretty new here, am a bit biased towards the post count. If it has a higher postcount, I usually take their word over someone with a smaller one. Not to say that I don't trust them, but I have little trust in the people that Caesar has described (oh and Squall fanboys. Yuck.). I think that once you get a few more posts under your belt, you begin to understand what you can and can't say.

The only thing I notice is that sometimes new members post up a storm for a day or two (usually incredibly stupid comments) and then suddenly dissapear when it no longer intrests them. When I look in the last post by category, and I see one persons name all the way down the board, I will be less likely to take them seriously. I mean, what are the chances that someone will have something intelligent to say about every single topic? Slim to none. Also, I start paying a little more attention when people have over 100 posts because then I think they are less likely to just pick up and leave the forum.

When i signed up,i thought getting a high post count would be easy, and thats what i wanted a high post count...and rank biggrin.gif . I posted quite a bit then, but now it's daily and i dont care about post count or ranks. But sometimes it does suprise me on some peoples post count. Not,low but high post count, and no i'm not saying having a low post count isn't umm wrong since i had a low post count before.

Well, in general I feel like once I reach 200 posts or so on a message board I lose "Noob" status, and feel more accepted I guess. After that, I really don't pay attention anymore but to say "Wow, look at how many posts I have. I'm a loser."

I think they're more of a liability than anything else. Often, newbies end up posting single-word posts ("LOL" and such) and replying to everything they can just to boost their post count so they stop feeling so noobish. If anything, seeing "200" next to your post count when your join date is "16th June 2006" is sad.

On the other hand, the post count serves no actual purpose. Keeping track of how many posts were made in each forums does help figure out where someone is most active, but the global post count doesn't offer anything positive. Someone who has 50 posts could've written longer and better replies than someone with 500 posts.

Personally I don't give a flying squid about it. I did feel somewhat amused at having 1337 posts, but other than that it just looks like some e-penis meter people enjoy toting around to me. What I rather like, however, is the rating system GameDev.net uses: your rating starts at 1000. Anyone can rate you up or down, but only once (votes can be changed, though.) If someone with a high rating rates you, your rating will increase/decrease by more (~4-5 points instead of ~2-3, for instance.)

It keeps track of who's cool and who's just a pain in general. And it's not something spamming will raise - in fact, if people are annoyed by one's behavior, their rating will plummet. A high rating is something to be proud of - it means you're an overall nice and helpful person. tongue.gif

I don't like having too high of a post count, because, to me, it means that I've spent too much time chatting on forums. blush.gif I don't really care about the post counts of others. If I see that they've been here for a year and have maybe 100 posts or less, it tells me that they don't post much. That's about it.

Well me being rather new i find that the opinions of others are regaurded with higher respect if they have a high post count but that doesnt count for all. but just by looking around and seeing people you dont need a higher post count but by reading lots of posts ive come to respect things that karasuman, Silverlance, and Zeromus_X say. and of course Rangers51. but it is nice to have a higher count.

To me, the postcount means nothing.

Some people on sites there half the time of me have twice my posts, and that's not nessicarily an indication of anything except they post a bit more. Some of those people post excellent replies most of the time.

A high post count does get you a little bit of veterancy, but IMO, it's quality and not quanitity that matters.

Post count used to mean something to me. "Back in the day," so to speak, I had the highest of any forum member. I've since been surpassed by any number of people.

I guess you could attribute post count to experience, but anybody can post a lot of nonsense just to boost their numbers. I don't really treat raw post count as any measure of knowledge, and hence my respect for a person's opinions doesn't take it into account. It's the content that really matters.

Ultimately, I don't judge by the number of posts people have, but by which person individually is posting it. If the person writing is someone I know to be insightful, intelligent, or articulate, I'm more inclined to pay attention to them regardless of how many times they've posted, high or low.

I guess post count does mean something to me, but I'm not about to post up a storm to keep up with the Joneses or whatever (I do wish there were more topics for me to post in lately, though tongue.gif ). As for others with lots of posts, either they know much more than I do about the subjects discussed here (more likely than not, heh) or they simply have been here a lot longer.

Y'know, I never really cared. If someone's been here a really long time and actively contributes, then I'd respect them. (That just means I respect them, I won't agree with them on everything because they have 2 billion posts.)

Actually, I've never really looked at my post count that often. I just noticed that there are more stars then there were before....huh.

Post count means everything to me. My sole objective since coming to this forum, has been for my post count to one day surpass that of Climhazzard. Once this is done, my life will be complete and I will be eternally happy. Not funny? Fine, sue me, lol.

People do tend to pay a little more attention to others if they have at least a few hiundred posts on a forum unfortunately, it's just the way it is. But of course, if you spam to get that many posts, no one is going to read your posts anyway (plus you'll probbaly get banned), thus you can't win!

I just post when I have something I think I can add to a conversation, or if I have something I think others may be interested in discussing. Doing otherwise would be pointless obviously and all you'll get from posting for no reason, is people annoyed at you. Some people want that though; silly people.

Post counts are worthless to me. I'll judge you by what you have to say in your post, not how many times you've said something before. And, that judgement may vary from post to post. You may say something very thoughtful in one post, but then turn around and say something that makes no sense in another. So looking at post counts for continuity just doesn't do it for me.

I've been on this forum for about four years now and haven't even mustered 250 posts. Think what you will of me. But that's fine, because CoN Chat's better anyways.

Post count never meant much to me, except for two things:

1. The occasional amusement of seeing myself with a new rank--not something I can force anyway.

2. Me deriving from my post count an estimate/sense of how much time I've wasted here.

What importance do you place on your postcount, and on the postcount of others?

Not much. Knowing the forum flow and how no one can make ninety posts a day here, having a high post count generally means s/he's spent time in the forum and stuck around and, if nothing else, can be leant a little more respect as to his/her opinion. That's not to say having low post counts should cause members to think less of newcomers' opinions, but a post count level can usually be equated to time spent on the forum.

Of course, I'm proud of my post count, even if it is just a number. I worked for it, I put time and effort into it and the large majority of it isn't goof-off posts. Though of little importance to most, I see no reason to think that people with exorbitant amounts of posts haven't earned them in some way.

When viewing your own postcount, do you feel that your opinions and thoughts are taken more seriously the higher the number? Do you feel that your post count reflects your "status" at a forum?

Not really. I think most people can recognize that a post count isn't a suitable mask for acting foolish or rude (fr'instance). I listen to everyone, but for all I know, I listen more intently to someone with a higher post count...I don't know.

When viewing others postcounts, do you think that a high number implies that they are more knowledgeable on the subject matter of the forum, or that their opinions carry more weight?

I guess I might, although I can already say that it's incredibly stupid to believe bigger/higher is better (I can only understand my own illogic!). It's like when you look for a walkthrough on a site. How do you tell a standout among the ranks? A high filesize is what I go for because I think that means there's more 'stuff' in there and that, in turn, more time was spent on it. It could be shabby and disorganized, of course, but when you're just looking at a set of things and need to rank 'em (I'd like to think most people put an imagined order on people/things, even if they won't admit it), you just look for something that tells of the worth. Was that a metaphor? Sure, why not!

I don't think anyone carries more weight than anyone else, but there's always going to be that unseen order and scrutinization members put on one another.

Do you make posts to boost your count numbers? If so, why?

Number-centric people are just out there posting; other people are picking and choosing. I've seen a few people here doing postcount buffs, but I couldn't finger anyone whose seen how the forums run. People not in it for the long run seem to get weeded out anyway.

No one'll admit to posting for postcount's sake anyway. =p

Not when it's specifically against the rules, no. smile.gif

It's a thread to give people an opportunity to say they never post except to express their deeply-held thoughts and opinions, not much more than that.

Edit
Wasn't trying to comment on your intent, Ham, but that's all you'll ever get from the thread, trust me.

That certainly wasn't my intent for this thread.

I've enjoyed the discussion so far, seeing what people really think about post count numbers and what they mean to them.
