Split from the nintendo wii topic:
Quote (Octopus King @ 21st May 2006 21:46) Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 20th May 2006 22:53) Quote (karasuman @ 18th May 2006 11:26) Quote (Kane @ 18th May 2006 11:13) ....Who am I kidding, I'm taping a sign that says "Nintendo Revolution" to mine... I might go so far as to color in the Wii logo with permanent marker. ![]() I was in fact planning on scratching out "Wii" and painting in its place "Revolution". And that's if I ever buy the system. They change the name; I don't buy the system. (Actually, it's because it costs more than $50. Which basically explains why I haven't gotten a new system in ages.) Awww... poor people are so cute. *throws coins at him* I'm not that poor. I could buy myself a $200 game system if I wanted to. Thing is, I'm not willing to use more than about $50 on a gaming system. If I'm going to, i might as well buy a nice game for a system I have, or buy an older system and several games (a $20 N64 and a $10 copy of Star Fox 64 would cost me well less than that "limit"), or something like that. I really don't have an urge to stay "updated" with the gaming scene, and if that means I'll save myself money, all the better. Plus, I sometimes play games on emulator only to find that they're really, really good, in which case I then intend to go out and buy them. So far, I have four or five games on this queue, and they all costs at most about $30 each. That's what I use emulators for (and to play handheld games with a bigger screen). Keep in mind you can't tell how good a game really is just by looking at it, and there aren't that many games up for sampling on display systems in game stores at the local mall. I generally like to wait and see what good games come out for a system before I buy the system--then it won't be a waste of my money if nothing but crap comes out for it. This also often involves waiting for up to 7~10 years after the system first comes out--its approximate "lifetime" before it gets "replaced" by a newer, better system. Then I decide I wanna buy System X for games A, B, C, and D. AFTER all the dust has settled. Okay, fine, I do this not completely out of a sense of frugality, nor out of style, but partly out of laziness and cheapness. It just kinda costs less, not so much that I want to save money, but that I don't like spending much, and I'm too lazy to keep track of the gaming market or get hyped about this. Plus, I feel that gaming aren't worth that much priority-wise anyway, and also tend to waste a good bit of my time. Give me a decade or so, and then I might be talking about how cool some of the games on the Nintendo Edit: link fix at top. I try to resist as long as possible, and have managed to wait at least 6 months to a year past launch for every system I've bought myself (PS, PS2, GC, GBASP, PSP.) But usually the second wave of games for a new system overcomes my willpower, and I cave in at some point. With PS2 that happened with MGS2 and GTA3, with GC it was Metroid Prime, Zelda and Mario Kart. If the Wii is as cheap as it's been reported to be, I don't think I'll limit myself to waiting a certain amount of time. But no matter what they throw out for PS3, I'm going to have to wait for the price to come down a notch or two.
If I know a game is an automatic hit (which pretty much it has to be the latest in a quality series) I buy it right away. If not, I wait and see what kind of reviews it gets, or if it's reccomended by anyone. -------------------- Hip-Hop QOTW: "Yeah, where I'ma start it at, look I'ma part of that Downtown Philly where it's realer than a heart attack It wasn't really that ill until the start of crack Now it's a body caught every night on the Almanac" "Game Theory" The Roots |

I always wait, and it always pays off. I didn't get an NES until 1991, an SNES until 1996, a PS1 until 2000, and a PS2 until 2004. I got both a Gamecube and an XBox at the same time from a friend last year, for a hundred bucks total. Waiting like that has also allowed me to get an awesome GBA SP and a DS Lite (in a few weeks, that is...) instead of the original models. I really don't see the point of getting a nextgen system for another few years, as there are still many current-gen and oldschool games I want to play or have to finish.
Oh, and for games, I only get games at launch VERY occasionally. The only games that I didn't have the patience for recently were DQ VIII and Tales of Phantasia. I also usually get a new game or two for Christmas and my birthday, but I don't mind as it isn't my money being spent. When I have so many games that I still haven't finished, it's really pointless getting a ton of games new. I might bite the bullet in a few months when Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin comes out, but we'll have to wait and see. -------------------- |

I'm usually late on buying new games. More often than not, by the time I buy a game that has been recently released, a newer sequel or spin-off of that game is already on the market or soon to be.

I'd buy early on simply because of the case all my friends have the same mindset as you all that puts me to have no way to play the game I want.

I think I'm basically in the same boat as laszlow. I got my PS1 in 2003 and I'm still finding good games to play on it from time to time. I'm sure I'll get a PS2 eventually and when I do, I'm sure it'll keep me occupied until I feel like getting a PS3 3 or 4 years from now, provided it has games I want, of course. Staying behind seems to work for me.
And it's not like I don't have other hobbies. This post has been edited by Galsic on 23rd May 2006 17:41 -------------------- |

I usually wait about a year after the launch to buy a new system. I got my NES, SNES, and PS1 almost as soon as they came out, but that was back when I had a lot more time.
I think the biggest lesson about waiting came w/ the Saturn. A lot of hardcore Sega fans felt ripped off b/c they bought it for $399 at the launch, only to have the price drop soon after b/c of poor sales. I've found that to be true of most systems and also for games. If you wait for the hype to die down, the price will drop. I'll only buy something at launch if I'm really excited about the title. Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 22nd May 2006 14:43) Keep in mind you can't tell how good a game really is just by looking at it, and there aren't that many games up for sampling on display systems in game stores at the local mall. I've found renting to be a pretty good solution to this. I saved myself from buying a few crap games by renting them first, and also found some games that were worth buying. |

I'm usual quite loyal to Sony, mostly because they dish out some of the best games ever. I also try to stick to the budget, and I usually don't go and buy a console the moment it's released; I usually wait a long while before buying it, so the prices go down.

I'll buy new systems once they've had a chance to stabilize any hardware problems, but the real deciding factor is the software. When they release a game that I absolutely have to play, I'll buy the system.
That means I'll probably have a PS3 when Silent Hill 5 is announced and a Revolution when they figure out their download service and I can download Secret of Mana. (Because, yes, that's more fun than my SNES cart.) -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

I usually wait for a game that I "must" have (my friend bought Tactics and I played it at his house.......then I bought a PS1 and FFT).
Otherwise, I generally wait at least a year, maybe two, to see what good games have come out that I might want to play (and obviously let the price drop a bit) |

I'm still waiting to get a PS2.
I usually wait to get a console until the next generation comes out. GameCube is the exception, which I got last year. Wii might be the next exception I make. Games usually take me a long time to get because of this policy. The earliest I got a game was FF4A, which I got a day after the release. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

I never buy a console when it first comes out. It seems like there’s always something wrong with a console when it’s first released, so I like to wait about 3-6 months to see whether something is f’ed.

As far as systems before the N64 and PS1 I don't know at what point we got our systems because they were for the family and information about new this or that wasn't at our fingertips like it is nowadays. I got an N64 probably a month or two after it came out and ended up being disappointed. I wish had waited to see that there was such a lack of support for the system and Nintendo not delivering on my main genre preference. I got my PS2 in the first shipment but only because I had credit at sears. The new DS Lite will be the first systyem I've ever reserved and will get on the day it comes out. In regards to next gen gaming., I plan on getting a PS3 but it's definately goingt o be something I have to save for so I probably won't get it on launch day. Until then I have a whole slew of PS2 and GC games that I haven't touched.

My personal policy is "don't spend money on video games and consoles." Though I've had my eye on getting a PS2 when the next gen consoles are released and the price drops, I mostly seem to play PC games now anyway.

I don't really need a policy for buying things. The fact that I live on the isle of skye deals with that. I doubt I will be getting any new games consoles until I move house, and I will get very few games before I finish half of the ones I have now, and those games would have to be 1: Games I wanted for a long time and 2: cheaper then £9.

I wait for new systems. After all, there are still great games made for the old one for a good year, and usually at a nice price.
Games, it depends. For series I follow (Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Nippon Ichi releases, Dynasty Warriors) as long as I haveb the system already I'll grab them as soon as they come out. Series I only moderately follow (Tekken, Suikoden, GTA) I'll get if I can aford to at the time, or I'll wait for the price to drop a little. Others that I just think look good I'll prolly wait til I see second hand or Platinum'd. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Of course I would think about whether I had time to play the game/s at that point in time. If not, I might as well wait until I do, at which point, if I'm lucky, prices may have dropped, and any unfortunate techincal problems would hopefully have been sorted as well. I only really buy a game I want if it's part of a series I like or it's a rare game I find. Other than that, don't buy new games often, or systems. I'm happy with the library of games from the Super Famicom, Playstations 1 and 2, and Game Boy Advance. If I ever do get another system, it'll probably be the Nintendo DS. I don't think I want any newer systems, especially with the price-tags on some of 'em. (PS3= biggest example.)
That doesn't mean I don't occasionally get things off of the internet. (VP, SO2, etc.) -------------------- |

For myself, I think it depends on where I want my entertainment to come from.
While I generally wait for the first price drop, I know that I'll spend more time on any gamestation than I would on the net, watching movies, going to movies, or watching cable (unless AdultSwim goes on another anime spending spree). If its worth the opportunity cost to you, and you're sure you'll be committed enough to it to be worth 15 to 20 dvds, it's worth it to you. There's nothing else that can captivate me for hours like a great game can, and that's worth gaming systems equal to my car payment, or greater. A one-time huge initial investment with a tremendous return is a risk worth taking. As a disclaimer, I do feel that the initial price point for the Ps3 is a special tax for early-adopters. The power of Sony in the market comes from the nearly 100 million installed units of the Ps2, and maybe 150 million (to a shy 200 million) Sony subscribers if you include Ps1 sales. I'm sure they won't forget that the common man needs to be able to afford it---otherwise no one will be around to play GTA: WashingtonDC, NCAAA Football 2008, or FinalFantasy XIV: TaruTaruFarmageddon. -------------------- Putting the A's in W lm rt: A11smart, Jobclass: Retailer. |

I don't bother with current generation systems (i.e. PS2, XBox, Gamecube.) There's enough good games out there for older systems; I own a Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and Playstation.

I bought a Sega Genesis second hand from a neighbour about 9 years ago, junked it about 6. I didn't get another console system til the PS2 in 2002(?). I bought the DS used last November for under $100. Considering how hard I am on my portable possessions (CD player, books, etc.), the used, slightly scratched up silver DS works since I don't feel completely responsible for what it looks like and another ding won't matter. I'll buy shiny and new once this bites the dust, but given my friends' Nintendo portables are seemingly indestructible, that won't be for a few years.
At the moment, the only game console I could afford without busting my meagre college piggy bank is the Wii, and it does look promising. I'm not all that bothered by the name; as long as it plays games that I like and won't kill my budget, I'll get it. The graphics look good to me (then again, I'm not that picky). However, PS3 is the motherload of temptation because I am an FF junkie, plus it's backwards compatible with everything else I have. I don't think I'm the only one who's been a little put off by the price. the attitude, or the "innovations" Sony magically developed since the Wii's controller was first introduced, though. I'm going abroad for year, so I can't get my mitts on a console anyway. When I come back, there will be victor...but I will probably end up getting Wii first and then a PS3 once they do a third or fourth price drop or they come out with a skinny version or whatever is the minor revamp for the PS3 (in which case I'd buy the now-cheaper old fat one). |

I absolutely refuse to pay for new systems - It is one of the least economical things I can think of. A handful of months after the PS3 hits, the Xbox should be low enough for me to get one, whether used or otherwise, and a ton and a half of games, for what a new Xbox would have costed me originally. In fact, I'm confident that after the PS3 hits, that I'll be able to get an Xbox and a PS2 and a handful of games for the price of a PS3. Also, I refuse to buy a PS3, due to the whole liscencing thing. Unfortunately, sellback is a part of how I could actually buy games, and trade-ins were a large part of my buying experience, so, no more of that.

I usually can't wait long but, I try to wait as long as I can but, if the ps3 is really like $500 I will have to wait a long time to get some extra cash or wait until the price drops a couple of hundred.
