Here is one thing that I've always wondered. Do you think the characters in FF games get any sort of schooling? Is their any evidence that sonme can't read or write? Obviously, characters like Sabin, Edgar, the FFVIII charcters and others have more of an education than others, but what about other characters?

Like most characters in fiction, this doesn't come up, nor does it really matter. Though we can still use our imaginations.
Okay... Tina- probably schooled in the empire. Celes- same. Lock- Probably picked up a few things, but maybe not a formal education Edgar- royalty, so most likely Mash- maybe the same Shadow- possibly (won't delve further here.) Strago/Relm- most likely. They do live in a village of mages after all. Gau- Definitely not. Gogo- Doesn't matter. Umaro- Doesn't matter. Ceyenne- also nobility, probably so. Mog- really doesn't matter Meh. Edit: Crap. This isn't just FFVI. Well, I'm too tired right now to list 'em all! Okay, fine. Cloud- Yes? Tifa- Yes? Barret- maybe not, working on coal all the time Kitten Sith- doesn't matter. Yuffie- Maybe. Vincent- Being a turk, probably so Nanaki- He's pretty wise already. FFVIII: Seeing as how they live in a school, I would think so. Meh. Don't need to go any further right now. 0_o; -------------------- |

I assume the vast majority of characters have. They can all read the signs when they enter villages or some random story-related note, yes?

The main party in FFT, I know, went to school before they went to the military academy and the FFVIII main cast lives in the equivalence of a school and it'd be safe to assume that royalty or those given a pedestal of some degree of power (not necessarily those that assume leadership by force) had a legit education. A lot of the other characters have a high level of "street smarts" if that means anything.

All i can think of at the moment. ![]() -------------------- Kel'Thuzad: She is persistent. Reminds me of you, death knight. Keep in mind that technological levels strongly correlate to the basic degree of education available to the commoner. That is to say that the world of FF8 would unlikely produce much in terms of illiteracy compared to the world of FF5.
Of course, generally most characters have something extremely interesting about them. Commoners rarely become any of the heroes here. Even so-called common folk like Zidane or Butz (Bartz? I forget the SQ translation) have special qualities associated with them that suggest a basic degree of literacy in the common tongue. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

I think Rosa, Kain and Cecil would have learned things, as they're in with the Castle and would require reading in their jobs. Rydia, probably not as much. She's in a simple town and a kid. Edge, Tella and Edward, yeah. Edward seems cultured and knowledged enough, sissy though he is. Yang seems disciplined, so I'd say he is.

Most of the FFTA characters do because they attended a school until they end up in Ivalice.
The FFVIII party live in a school so they're educated. This post has been edited by One_Winged_Angel on 22nd June 2006 18:08 |

Marlene was supposed to get an education.
I suppose all royalty characters got it. For Lenna, Sarisa, Edgar and Garnet, this was confirmed. All Cids (except FFX Cid) probably have some sort of engineering degree. All FFVIII characters were schooled, as they go to a military academy. Palom and Porom are in the midst of their education. I would suppose Cecil, Kain, and Rosa got one as well, and Celes and Cyan too. Steiner probably got an education. FFX characters do not get schooled, as Yevon seems to discourage intellegence (children do go to priest school though). The Al Bhedians probably teach themselves... -CSM -------------------- The NEW Final Fantasy Wiki! Join us! |

That's an interesting question to pose. Based on their worlds, perhaps the literacy and
competency rate is significantly lower than expected. I'll grant that these are games, but except for the rare interface, most of their calculation is automated by robots or tech, and it seems a huge amount of visual data is conferred via icons, rather than signs. There's no greater sign than the degradation of literacy than the adoption of pictographics over language, a regression in linguistics. It implies that it is easier for everyone to learn one image-type, than to bother a civilization with a lingua franca. ¡Y lo necesitamos! Bus thodaasaa. Given that the original target audience would come from a society where education is both a constant and continuous event (with more gradeschool and collegiate class time in asia than in europe or the americas), it's more likely that overt indications of education are omitted to maintain the sense of escapism gamers seek in their electronic worlds.
