Putting Barret in your party would help. Using Thunder magic as well, and don't forget that Limit Breaks aren't ranged.

Or, if all else fails...

give red long range materia so that he can do normal attacks - give aeris the healing role. also using any attack items helps (grenades)

You don't have the Long Range Materia at this point in the game, and Barret is in your party by default at this point as well.

Have Red focus on using Offensive Materia, preferably Bolt since you are fighting machines afterall, who have a weakness to Bolt-magic. Have Aeris healing as often as possible, but also equip her with one or two offensive spells, because I doubt you'll need to heal every turn. Have Barret stick to using Fight, and use Limit Breaks any chance you can get. Putting him in the backrow also reduces some of the damage he takes, while allowing him to dish out the same amount of damage himself since he has ranged weapons. Finally, don't forget that you DO have the option to "Defend" every so often, and it does help considerably early on in the game, so try it out when you feel you're getting assaulted.

Beyond that, I'd have to say make sure you have some useable items handy, healing and offensive, you never know when they might come in handy, and good luck.
