Howdy. I sold my ps2 and psx, so... I was wondering if anyone knew of a website where I could get a download of the pc version (legal, ofcourse). I know Eidos published it but I cant track down a load (get it? down a load?). Thanks!
Also, does anyone know the differences between the two other than the obvious psx-to-pc translations? -------------------- Feeling unknown And youre all alone Flesh and bone By the telephone Lift up the receiver Ill make you a believer |

The PC version has higher resolution, and additional config options, however, it has a Midi soundtrack (for some reason), and the sound effects just plain suck. If you absolutely cannot get a new game machine, then I suppose you can get this. (You could always get the Jenova program and mess around with the game, I suppose.)
Other than that, I don't know all the differences between them, though I'd guess these are the biggest. Edit: Have you ever listened to OWA in Midi? It's absolutely horrifying. -------------------- |

I have the PC version myself, so I'll note down some things you ought to know:
1) Be SURE to download the Chocobo Patch, else, the game will crash when entering a chocobo race. Even if you don't plan on doing the whole Chocobo subquest, remember it's necessary to race once to advance in the game, so if you don't do this, you'll be screwed. 2) During any submarine minigame (the plot one or otherwise) be sure to play FFVII in the WINDOWED mode, else, it will crash. 3) I HIGHLY recommend downloading "The Reunion Patch"... what it does is replace the characters' chibi models outside battles with the high-res versions from the Final Battle. Mind you: not ALL NPC are replaced, just some of them, so the game may look a bit odd. Still, a must have ![]() 4) Music is MIDI, as Zeromus said, but there's a patch you can apply that replaces the MIDI tracks with the standard MP3 tracks (that is, if you have FFVII OST in your PC, obviously). This is a must, since MIDI tracks completely suck. As for SFX, you'll have to deal with them, since there's no other way around them as of now. 5) Careful when fighting Emerald Weapon: sometimes the game will refuse to load the battle and freeze. For that matter, sometimes Emerald does not appear at all. All you'll have to do in these cases is save, reset, and hope the game wishes Emerald to appear and allow battle with him. 6) In some cases, the Final FMV will freeze. This is rare, but some versions have shown this particular bug several times. There's no workaround; if you get hit with it, say goodbye to it ![]() ![]() I guess that's all you need to know ![]() ![]() -------------------- "But he's the sort of man who can't know anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn't know what a woman is. He wants you for a possesion, something to look at, like a painting or an ivory box. He doesn't want you to be real, or to think or to live. He doesn't love you..." Actually, you can get a music patch that supposedly allows the game to use PSF files instead (played through Winamp or something). I haven't gotten it to work, and I haven't messed with FFVII for a long time, so I can't tell you if that works or not. But if it does, it's even better than mp3.
Also, I've had trouble in the PC version in getting the piano-playing portions to work right. Some of the "notes" don't get played when I hit the correct buttons. And this includes notes in the FFVII theme tune, which you should know is pretty significant at a few points in the game. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |

The PSFs are better from a looping point of view, certainly. The only problem was, last time I checked, there was a significant track that wouldn't play right because there's no direct PSF of it (it's just another track that starts playing halfway through). Only happens once in the game though.
If you have a Sound Blaster sound card, you can load the FF7 soundfonts that come with the game to improve the MIDI. The game can do this automatically on Windows 9x but it annoyingly doesn't work for XP. A particular irritation since it actually loads a different one for One Winged Angel when it's working properly, with all the voice samples and such. In many ways, it's easier to play the original on an emulator than suffer the pain of trying to fix the PC version, unless you have a 3dfx video card and a Windows 98 partition lying around. |

Follow the sound advice from Mr Tiddles...
Download a playstation emulator (free and legal). I use ePSXe, with a couple of carefully chosen sound and graphics plugins. You still need to own the CD ROMs - (That's why its legal! did you sell them too??) Anyway - ebay has always got a rake of them, so for 20 bucks/euros whatever you're sorted. It can be time consuming to get a sweet emulator setup which doesn't crash, has quality sound, and runs at the same speed as the ol' playstation. But not as time consuming as fixing up the now ancient game for modern PC hardware. Emulators offer some cool advantages: 1. For those long (KoTR) summon sequences, you can config your emulator to run at lightning speed. NB battle mode should be set to "wait" and also set very slow - to give you time to think. 2. You can also config emulator to run dead slow. Only recommended for scoring maximum points at speed square in gold saucer. 3. most useful feature by far:- You can save the state of the game to your PC hard drive at any time, rather than just at save points. Making the game rather easy. Especially in combat vs nasty enemies (e.g. weapons), but also handy at gold saucer:- arm wrestling, slam dunk machine, snowboarding etc - max scores, no problem chocobo gambling - win every time (but have to watch each race twice) chocobo racing - useful for winning materia etc at S-class races |

Haha, I had a mod chip in my psx which is why I never downloaded Bleem or whatever it's called. Im naughty. The PC version seems like a pain in the ass, I dont want to put up with that, and finding a copy of ffvii is basically a lost cause and if I did find one, I like having both my kidneys and not having to sell one to afford a copy. Oh well.. I'll get it someday once nobody is crazy about it anymore.

FFVII isn't common, though now people want to rake in money from it's 'returning popularity'. *sigh* It really shouldn't be so expensive, but I guess it just happens.
But really, I thought the PC version was actually pretty rare. -------------------- |

Well... while of course we don't encourage or condone illegal activity etc., an emulator is quite happy to play copied/unofficial disks, if it helps. |

Yeah, everyone who's not a dolt does that on eBay. Let's keep it on the PC version topic, please.
