Everybody talks about music so much, so I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet.
1) Rock - Any style, any era. 2) R&B - there shouldn't be much to explain 3) Pop - Domestic or imported. I don't care 4) Rap - there shouldn't be much to explain 5) Contemperary Christian - Any of the "other" types of music that the word "Christian" can be placed in front of (Christian Rock, Christian Pop, Christian Rap, etc.). Does not include hymnals, gospel, or bands that have a Christian message if you look hard enough. (So if all you listen to is Creed or POD, don't click this) 6) Heritigeal - The most common would be Gospel, Irish/Scottish/Celtic/relatives, Native American, or Ancient anything 7) There's more than that! - I know I left something out, so if it is yours, choose this. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

I voted Rock. But the term rock has to be the most vague saying ever considering there are at least 10 types of "rock music". My favorite "sub-genres", per se, in order are...
1) Hard Rock: Loud, dark guitar riffs, bass usually tuned to C-D-C-G, dark lyrics paired with loud vocals/occasional screaming (e.g. Trust Company, Tool, Nonpoint, System of a Down) 2) Modern Rock: Stereotypical rock.... Often a modern rock band will have 2 lead guitarists, but not all the time. A standard tuning on the bass, often a basic bassline of one note consecutives, vocals are clear but can range (e.g. The Exies, Puddle of Mudd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 3 Doors Down) 3) Punk Rock: A lot of times there is a difficult bassline. Half the time, the guitar is limited to light riffs or simplistic rhythms. the other half of the time, the guitar line is extremely experienced and challenging. Drumming is loud and stands out. (e.g: 311, Offspring, Goldfinger, Green Day) 4) Grunge: one of the most outspoken genres of rock. Guitar riffs are loud and incoherent, but yet sound so awesome. Drumming is usually just snare, bass drum, hi-hat, and multiple crash cymbals (Toms are used occasionally in certain songs). Bass is either tuned up (F-B-D-G) or the E-string tuned down (D-A-D-G) and is often hammered (instead of picked or plucked, strings are hit to create a sort of "DooM" sound) (e.g: Stone Temple Pilots, The Vines, The White STripes, Local H, Foo Fighters, Nirvana) those are the genres of rock i listen to the most. -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

metal/hardcore punk... metallica, ozzy, zakk wylde, sabbath, sick of it all, blood for blood, cradle of filth and more, but none of that gayass nu-metal hard rock... ac/dc, zeppelin, aerosmith, etc. classic rock- SKYNYRD, the who, the rolling stones, hendrix, cream, clapton, thin lizzy and a lot more than that. -------------------- You watch the world exploding every single night Dancing in the sun, a newborn in the light Say goodbye to gravity and say goodbye to death Hello to eternity and live for every breath Your time will come... |

Well, I'll just say Punk Rock. And I agree, "Rock" is VERY vague.

"Rock" is a very vague category, but basically I'm just a straight heavy metal dude. At the moment, I'm in my Metallica phase.

I clicked on rock, but I listen to a lot of stuff, and I can never really tell what category it goes into. Does anyone else like swing music, like Brian Setzer Orchestra? I know R51 does.

Blues and rock really rocks...
But in the sancutary of my own room (which is painted orange might I add) I listen to...Classical... No really.  You want proof?  Go king.org, that's the station on my radio. Nuthin' like painting your room orange while listenin' to a opera in Italian. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. above all, i worship blues. just about everything i listen to is based on it, and i bow down to it.
im big on a lot of metal, which is blatantly blues-based, if you listen to the roots of it, like sabbath and zeppelin. of course i love classic rock like the beatles and the rolling stones and the who and bob dylan, cuz thats the first music i ever heard, i get a rap from a lot of middle aged people about how its their music, but its the first music i ever heard, so its mine as well. like every serious musician, i respect nothing more than a jazz musician. they can do anything and more, they are the epitome of musical talent as far as im concerned. and you just cant mess with elton john, no matter what kinda musician you wanna classify him as. black or white, gay or straight, no matter how you want to look at a man, he has something for everyone. i play in kind of a blues metal band with a touch of funk to some of our songs (if youd like to hear some, ill try to get some recordings together, all instrumental though, we have trouble holding onto singers) -------------------- You watch the world exploding every single night Dancing in the sun, a newborn in the light Say goodbye to gravity and say goodbye to death Hello to eternity and live for every breath Your time will come... |

Quote (therandyrhoads @ 11th April 2004 21:45) i play in kind of a blues metal band with a touch of funk to some of our songs (if youd like to hear some, ill try to get some recordings together, all instrumental though, we have trouble holding onto singers) I'd love to hear your music, if you can in some way get it recorded. I recomend Acid Pro, a relatively cheap computer program that lets you mix and record songs directly from your mic/guitar to your computer. That's how I record all of my music, because I like to record little bits at random and it's hella convenient. I don't have any work with other members, though; I find that things go better if I do it all myself, so it's all overdubbed me. If you want to hear some, pm me. More on topic, however, I wouldn't think I can vote anything but other. My music varies so much, because I can appreciate any music that is good, from classic rock to indie rock to hard rock. I'll vote in the rock and roll category, though, because I tend not to like any other genre (save funk and blues, which are a variation of rock and the root of rock, respectively) . |

I say this every time, but since my advice isn't heeded, maybe i'll just stop saying it.... "Rock" is such a vague expression. There are too many types of rock nowadays. Hard Rock, Alternative Rock, Modern Rock, Vintage Rock, Grunge Rock, Punk Rock (even with punk, you have so many derivatives), Contemporary... albeit I know there are only 10 choices, so....
Anyway, I'm a fan of all music (yes, all of it). If I were to define myself though, I'd say the many variants Rock. Nothing gets to me more then hearing a fine guitar riff melded with a stellar bassline over a killer drum rhythm. My favorite styles of rock are Hard Rock... Grunge... and modern alternative. As a musician myself, I completely agree with randyrhoads on the appreciation of jazz. Jazz musicians were and are the hardest working, most talented musicians in the business. I'm the drummer for the school jazz band (though I don't think I would categorize myself as hard-working >_>). Jazz is a really fun style to play. A little less than a year ago, I was also the bassist/vocalist for a rock, mostly-cover band (we wrote some stuff at least). but anyway... -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |
