I've got it! this is all some sick, twisted april Fools joke! It's got to be. A little late maybe but that's my only conclusion. even if it's "real name" is Wii, nobody is going to call it that. When I go to EB Games to buy one I'm going to ask for a "Revolution". As long as it's one of the clerks that actually knows video games...

The words "I would like to buy a Wii" and "I'm here to buy (insert game name here) for the Wii" aren't ever coming out of my mouth. Viva la Revolution!

that's just me though.

Why couldn't Wii have been the codename....darn it

Even "Codename: Dolphan" would have been better than Wii

How shall I do that? Well, may I simply ask Nintendo the question, "Wii did you do this?!"

It's Wii as in "we," not "why." C'mon now.

The interesting thing, though, is that, since I wasn't aware of the "official" pronunciation, I pronounced it differently, and, in the style of Koji Igarashi I shall now excommunicate the "official" pronunciation.

Back to the main topic, though...

DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY LIKE THE NAME, as in "prefer it over Revolution"?

I'm not a Nintendo fan, not for their more recent consoles at least. But I thought the Revolution was a cool name. The Wii made me sigh and roll my eyes. So no. I don't prefer the name at all over the Revolution.

Seriously, we've had some borderline lame names before. The TurboGraphix (wooo~ so high-tech and l33tx0rz lolz!!), the Saturn (...yeah, a planet having anything to do with gaming?), the Coleco Vision (...just what did that have to do with anything??), the Lynx (what a name for a handheld device! biggrin.gif) the Phantom (which, like a ghost, vanished from the news...), the Virtual Boy (which is just a joke in itself, frankly), but while those were strange and unusual names, they weren't mockable.

The Wii, on the other hand, is a total joke of a name.

I'm eagerly expecting the handheld version, the Nintendo Loo.

The name only sounds remotely funny in English, so I don't really have a problem with it. People seem to forget that.

I honestly believe that the system is going to be called the Revolution, not the friggin Wii.

Not sure if this was a hoax or a publicity attempt or what, but after thinking on it and noticing that every gamer site you go to and every gamer mag you pick up still calls it the Revolution, I'm going with that.

At this point in time, I've gotten over it. It's really not that bad of a name to me anymore. I still want one, and even if I didn't, it ciertainly wouldn't be because of a silly name.

Ok. That's it. Square has forever shattered any hopes I might've had of accepting the name "Wii" after one of their E3 statements on how they'd realease Crystal Chronicles: Rings of Fate (or something) on "Nintendo's Wii."

Nintendo's wii.. XD

I don't dislike it more than "Revolution" if that's what you mean.

Anyone else remember how Nintendo has always used codenames for their new consoles? N64's was Jaguar, etc.

Anyone remember what GameCube's was?

iirc, it was "dolphin sex." the dreamcast had codename "katana," no? the gba was called "atlantis." this is nothing new -- but one wonders why the companies bother with codenames if they inevitably get leaked to the media for what they are, anyway?

The N64 was "Project Reality", actually. The Jaguar was a failed 64-bit Atari console.

Don't forget, though, that "Project Reality" was "officially" renamed to the Ultra 64 before it became the Nintendo 64, and for a while it was set to be the Ultra 64 in the West and Nintendo 64 in Japan, so it's not inconceivable that the name could change again, or change just for certain territories. It seems unlikely at this point, but not at all impossible given the highly critical feedback the name has received from US shores.

"Nintendo, we're "'Wii"ing all over the competition"

"Nintendo, we'll 'Wii' all over you"

Maybe I just have a ridiculously childish sense of humor, but the idea of the Wii being used in a slogan of a similar vein is absolutely hilarious to me tongue.gif
