Maybe they didn't want you to restart the One Winged Angel fight

The final battle is cinematic. The actual AI for Sephiroth makes it so that EVEN if you let him attack, not only will he fail to kill Cloud but also Cloud instantly counters.
The "LAR SPEHIROTH IS A GOD OMG SOP OWARFUL!" phase is over. At this point, the game is ending. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I dunno really, the first time I played the game I thought it was good fun but having completed it many a time I wish he was stronger. However this is purely because I'm running out of challenges in the game... I'm sure it's the same for you.
I think that last fight is cool enough anyway. Cloud's graphics are awesome (I wish it was like that throughout the game) and letting Sephiroth hit me before Cloud Counter-Attacks is awesome. Also the music is legendary. I say, let's all be happy with what we've got. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Whenever I beat the game I always liked being at a somewhat low level, like around the low 60s. To make it more challenging I toss out KOTR+Mime and Final Attack+Phoenix stuff. The first time I played, I'm not ashamed to say Sephiroth kicked me to the curb. After I finally beat the Safer form, I wasn't about to let him kill me.
But yeah, he had the pleasure of kicking my behind enough so it was his turn. -------------------- "Shut up. You're making me sober..." -Reno *Ryoko* |

Considering all the energy he must have been putting into merging with the lifestream, combined with the multiple battles with Cloud and company, I don't think it's so far fetched to imagine he'd be relatively weak in the last, one on one battle.
That, plus keep in mind this is the first time Sephiroth is using his true body since the incident in Mt. Nibel's Reactor, those other forms were just his various puppets, the experimental clones in black robes. So, for someone who was basically out of action for five years, it's safe to assume he wasn't at peak physical prowess. Maybe, had he been at the top of his game from the beginning, it would've been a different story, but the point was that Sephiroth was no God when it was all said and done, just a monster of a man with delusions of grandeur. That, plus it was for dramatic effect, Cloud saves the day in one last epic hurrah. After all the fighting you've done just to get to that point, would you really want it to just go on even longer? It would've felt overly dragged out if it had, by my reasoning. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I always thought it was just Cloud overcoming Sephiroth's mind, not a physical battle, but meh.

Quote not a physical battle Yeah I totally agree. In the ending cinematic you see Cloud's "spirit" or something leaving his body to go down and fight Sephiroth. Thus making the battle all the more symbolic. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

I always took it as Sephiroth's remains in the lifestream itself, I mean, everyone someone like him would "Return to the planet", so maybe Cloud was called down into the lifestream to finish to job?
Regardless, it was a much more symbollic battle than anything, I agree. Though, the Advent Children battle...that was purely physical, I mean, buildings exploding and getting thrown around? That seems pretty physical world to me. Although, it would be interesting if Sephiroth had never actually been there, Cloud might've still been fighting Kadaj and just imaging good ol' Seph in his stead. I mean, we've all seen how crazy Cloud is. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I don't think it's dumb at all, you've already just beat the crap out of him, I think it adds a nice effect, 1 vs 1, Sephiroth in his true form, shows he really gets finished off.
Shouldn't this thread be flagged for spoilers? |

Eh ALL threads should be flagged for spoilers. It's not really an issue unless you're saying something REALLY important that would spoil the game.
Yeah the lifestream must be it. As Sephiroth is preventing Holy from activating I suppose he'd have to be somewhere central like that. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

Physical only because Cloud was able to overcome the mental area of it. Yeah the AC battle was symbolic as well. But for different reasons.
Remember Rufus explaining how "life will beat all that it faces, so bring your Jenovas and your Sephiroths and we will beat them again and again" - or something like that. Well the repetition of Cloud facing Sephiroth is like life facing... death; or certainly another enemy. It's a positive battle because it shows that humans will always face adversaries (Sephiroth says "I will never become a memory" - again this quote might be wrong!) but we will always defeat them. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. I mean, Sephiroth was really putting the hurt on Cloud. It seemed like Cloud was doing his best just to avoid getting slaughtered, let alone fight Sephiroth. I don't think Cloud really ever will completely get over the kind of influence that Sephiroth had on him, just because that's his character. I do think though, that he finally realized that he's got to move on anyways. But, I get your point that the battle was a symbollic one. So I guess Sephiroth is a bit like Herpes, they might dissapear and you might recover from them, but they never truely leave you. Still, I'm just glad the final battle in North Crater didn't drag out even longer, into a third battle and that it was something you could sit back and enjoy, rather than pull your hair out. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

It certainly did scare the crap out of me when I first saw it though. I was like, "Oh God, he's not dead, Oh god, I'm gonna so die, argh!!!! Omnislash? Wassat? Where's my items? Argh, quick, before he kills me!" lol.

YES
well let me relate a story. when i first played, the very first time i died... 6 times..... but on the seventh time i finally beats Safer Sephiroth. the fight lasted 2 and a half hours!! 2 and a half hours!!!!!! so i beat him and he broke and kinda blew away in that weird way he does and you cant imagine my relief. i was so happy, like defeating someone whoes not supposed to die. then cloud says, "i can..still feel him.... laughing.." or something like that. i was like oh shit. i just faced this uber Sephiroth for 2 and a half hours now hes still there! so i go to the battle, hes there and my limits charging im freaking out inside and i see omnislash. i did not have this limit, in fact i was on lvl 2 limits. so i tried it out, pretty sweet and i slaugheterd him..... NOW Square did this because if i would have fought him and lost then my brain would have exploded and then my family would sue. major lawsuits. thats why by the way i have since become an FFVII god. hence my signature -------------------- Sata Tsubasa no Tenshi- Barret - "Cloud the group has been talking and we feel that its time for a new leader." Cloud - "Judas explain your treachery!!" Some people say its sad when I can walk them through FFVII in my head. I call it a gift. |
