I do hope it reduces by the time it comes out. There was an old video game system if I can recal that costs like $640 or higher. I think it was the Neo Geo system. Well, I never got it so I wouldn't know much, but meh.

With all the discussion of pricing that has previously bounced around the news forum, I won't really trust any pricing news until it's on store shelves.
Of course, I also don't care. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Or perhaps buying a really good looking shirt? |

Well, I hardly see what the fuss is if there is one, becuase it's now £220 from those figures. That's roughly what it cost for PS2 when released in the UK, and a proper XBox 360 costs $399 (Not the diddy core system) so all that means is, at those prices, PS3 isn't really that expensive when you think about it.
But I somehow doubt that what will basically be a slightly superior console will sell for the same as one that's going to need to upgrade to handle HD-DVD. So if the price is around that, there's not a reason to complain. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Sure there is, there's always a reason to complain. I don't really care about market price, I just don't have that kind of money. I'll just start complaining about the whole market then.

Is it really that surprising? I mean, I do hope it's cheaper when it comes out, but it won't really matter. Although it'd still be best to wait until it actually comes out to know how much it is.

This is kinda what I've been hoping would be the case. It's a lot of money, but it's not something that no one can afford--look how well the 360 sold at the same price.

Well, considering that some were speculating ~$700 for the PS3, I'm definitely happy with $399 (though I still can't afford it b/c my car broke down).

I think I remember reading some news on digg where this is price is announced by the next issue of PSM, but I'm not sure if it's true or not.
Still, while I'm quite happy that the price is lower than I was expecting, you have to wonder how Sony can afford this. The unit cost specs I found said that each PS3 is going to cost something like eight hundred bucks to build, so Sony would be selling this baby at a huge loss. There will be tons of literature on it once the bugger comes out, so maybe we'll here an explanation sometime soon. And yes, NED, the Neo-Geo was crazy-expensive. But it's also totally awesome. -------------------- |

I'll hop on the Playstation bandwagon at any time, and four hundred smackeroos doesn't seem too pricey what with the 360 being shoveled off the shelves with ease. Probably wait for that first price drop and for the game selection to broaden, but even as an estimate, that ain't much of a disappointment.

This is one of many reasons why I want a Wii instead.

i've stopped caring. Between student loans and a girlfriend, I'm lucky that I can even afford a jar of mayo... I'll probably end up buying it when the PS4 comes out, when they sell them for a dollar a dozen (Yay! Only 5 years until I get a PS3!!!)

I think I'll wait for the PS3 to drop to about have that price before getting one. I think I'd rather get a Revolution instead this time around (I refuse to call it a Wii). Probably the Revolution will not cost that much in comparison.

Yeah, and the PS4 comes out where you have to hook your brain up to some virtual simulator.

Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 2nd May 2006 05:28) Quote (Rangers51) Of course, I also don't care. Second. Until the PS3 does anything cool. Will currently be the first console capable of popping entire videogame series on ONE disc for consoles unless 360 does a 180 on not having HD-DVD games... Will look like a space toaster still... Won't be weaker than playstation two in terms of overall specs unlike a certain puddle of Wii. I feel unless the That Which Has Been Daftly Named is 120 GBP or less, it's a ripoff. The potential of PS3 and even the XBox 360 at £250+ (following transatlantic bumpings of prices) far outwiegh what increasingly seems to be a weak console that will rely solely upon gimmicks, fanbase, and old games. It's not a bad console, but it's sounding less like a revolution and more like they've renamed it to not let the people expecting something amazing down too badly... After all, all they give you is Wii now, not a revolution. The name most cetainly is a factor because it tells you the future. N64, had about 6-4 good games. XBox, had about Ten (X), Playstation just stayed there and was hard to remove, like a station, Gamecube was a cube which actually gave good games but found itself limited by a box, and the 360 is the same as before after doing a little spin to look if it could go another way. Playstation 3 simply doesn't want to be so subtle and just come out with saying it's the same with much more potential. Still, it's not the size of the console that matters... it's the cost. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

I'd say it's the quality of the games that matters the most.
Price and machine power don't matter anywhere near as much to me. Xbox 360 just seems to be pumping Xbox or PS2 games out, except with a bit of polish on them, nothing particularly impressive. Granted it has a good Internet service for online play, but I don't think the games themselves are all that great and that's what counts, so I can't say I'm interested. Wii. I've never been a fan of Nintendo or Sega, or whatever it is. I think they're ok. But I don't see myself buying one of these. You never know though! As unlikely as it is. So if anything, it will be PS3 for me. The games look like they could be fantastic, mind blowing and seriously good fun. But I will wait and see before giving judgement and throwing my money at Sony. But if they provide the quality games, I will definately pay the money for them. I look forward to seeing what they can do with much anticipation. -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

I dunno, the revolution (I'm with you on this, ultimage) is alot cheaper, and up until the Gamecube (which, besides a few good games, was a dud) I was a nintendo fanboy. So I think that I'll save my pathetic "income" for that.

I'd probably be most likely to get the Wii, even with its crappy remotes. I'm not spending $400 for a Sony system, and I won't by the 360. Perfect Dark Zero is the only decent-looking game on it. -CSM
