ah yes, the lufia series. i have played 1 and 2, but i never finished part 1. lufia II was okay, but honestly, i thought it was very easy and very repetitive. it was a nice little game i guess, but not very challenging at all. it got boring to me about half way thru and i just finished it for the sake of finishing.

Never was a big fan of the Lufia series. Uninspiring gameplay and needlessly frustrating puzzles, combined with vapid storylines and minimal characterization. Pass.

I loved the Lufia series. I felt the characters were very memorable and the comradery between them was superb. Although like most RPGs at the time it had a cheesy script, it succeeded quite well in the developement of its characters. The storyline was pretty good too, but I felt the "Lar~ I am a hero - my power is immense!" cliché was unecessary. The storyline could've been much more interesting had the characters been normal.
Lufia's dungeons rock. The designers made ingenious use of the game engine in some puzzles (such as having enemies move on switches and the likes.) Lots of it kept me trying to figure out the solution for quite some time. A very welcoming change of pace from those bland RPGs where you can breeze through the game in a weekend. If there's one thing I didn't like about Lufia, it was the battle system. I'm not a fan of those first person systems like Earthbound and Dragon Quest. It wasn't as bad in Lufia, though a side view would've been cool. In the end, I felt some of my characters were becoming useless. That sucked somewhat. One thing owns hard about the Lufia series: the ancient cave. Woo... man, if there's one game that implanted these things properly, it's Lufia. Parasite Eve's Chrysler Building was boring, repetitive, and very bland. But Lufia? Some of these random dungeons felt like real dungeons. It was great. ![]() Excellent game, IMO. Lufia is a great series. The Ancient Cave is still one of my favorite experiences ever. If there's anything that's proof that RPGs should be more interactive and less story-intense, the Lufia series is it. But the Lufia series also had a good story. Dekar is one of my favorite characters of all time, and the battle music and the town music played in Alekia are awesome scores.
Basically, Lufia is everything that's good about the Final Fantasy series combined with everything that's good about the Zelda series. Lufia II is still one of my favorite games of all time, and Lufia I is up there. I know they've released several Lufia spinoffs for GBC, but there needs to be a "Lufia III" for the GameCube or better, the GBA. I liked Lufia II for SNES and Lufia III for GBC...didn't like Lufia IV for GBA though, I thought it was too hard to level and make any gold, it took way too long...basically you had to go through the game at a low level with weak characters, and I am the type who likes to work up insanely high during my first play through a game, because I just wanna beat it and see the ending without all those annoying struggles. The struggles can come after I beat it...that's why I prefer RPG's over any other game as well.

lufia 1 was the very first rpg i played (followed by ff6 then ff4), and i loved every second of it. sure, it has plenty of flaws (by far the most notable being the lack of re-targeting by slower party members when an enemy group has been killed by other part members). but it had a great story, which, while cliche as hell, was solid, and has one or two cool twists besides. the characters were well-attended to for a non-ff rpg of that time. lufia's dungeons were some of the best. the battle system wasn't that great, but it being my first rpg, i sure as hell didn't mind it. it feels really slow when i play it now, too, but i still have nothing but good memories of that game.
when lufia 2 came out it was more of the same, for me. i still like lufia1 better, but i've probably played through lufia2 more times -- it has a new game+ mode for the ancient cave, after all. and speaking of the ancient cave, silverlance, have you ever actually beaten the cave, on snes? it doesn't sound like it. the ancient cave is pretty stupid. the overall design concept was great -- but then the developers couldn't help but add some stupid crap in the last 30 or so levels that make you totally dependant on luck to get through. i think the average number of tries it would take someone before they beat the cave, minimum, is 20. first you have to build up blue chest stuff, then you have to get lucky in several different ways, including selection fo chests and not being screwed by some ridiculous instant kill to your whole party by some fkcuing dragons that you have to kill to level up. and then once you get to the slime, unless you are using a faq -- gamefaqs i don't think even existed when lufia2 came out -- you would NEVER beat him, because you would be totally unprepared for the stupid idiot method by which you have to kill him (or do all 100 floors, which is a good 8+ hours, again). the ancient cave was so frustrating; it's one thing to design a difficult, tedious dungeon that takes careful rationing of limited supplies and equipment. it's nother to make the descent down depend in LARGE part upon luck. but anyway otherwise it was a pretty good game. i didn't like the story of lufia2 as much, but the same characters that figured heavily into the first game's plot were featured well in l2. the puzzles in this game were absolutely amazing -- and again, the game was before gamefaqs. some of these puzzles took many hours to complete, which could potentially result in overleveling in an already fairly easy game. it was a fairly long game, as many rpgs tended to be back then, and although the game did get dungeon-heavy at the end (egg dragon quest was also kind of stupid, but i guess it doesn't outweigh its rewards), it never became too tedious, and there was always plenty of new equipment to work for. however, even when i play l2 now, i feel that the game is very slow. younger gamers or gamers who got into rpgs later than others may find the slow speed of the snes lufia games to be off-putting. at any rate, the games were great games given their respective eras, and both represent the genre well. |

I have Lufia II, and I think I'm near the end...but...meh. I just lost interest. There are way too many "take item here open door find new item" type quests. Also, the ending was spoiled for me. I doubt that I'm ever going to finish it, and if I thought I could make any money doing so, I'd probably sell the game on eBay.

I love Lufia II, but I agree with Karasuman about the quests...they had it down to a formula. It would be something like this:
*Group arrives at new town* Townsperson: I saw a weird guy at the NORTH LABYRINTH. What is going on? Child: Mom told me never to go to the NORTH LABYRINTH! Old Man: Nobody believes me when I tell them that I saw strange light at the NORTH LABYRINTH! So, you go to the NORTH LABYRINTH and beat up whoever is causing problems, and go back to the town. Townsperson: Somebody just left town to go to OTHER TOWN to the east! Child: I love going to OTHER TOWN to get their delicious treats! Old Man: My daughter is engaged to a deaf mime at OTHER TOWN to the east! I'm going to go visit her! They'd occasionally mix things up and you'd have to talk to a random king to figure out what dungeon is next, but other than that it was pretty much the situation above until endgame. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? I rented Lufia II several years ago and I remember liking it. In fact, I went ahead and rented it again right after just to finish it. Heck, I still remember one of the dungeon themes after all that time. Yep, I remember liking the game, just not enough to buy it

In New Game+, you probably got the Gades Blade from Gades, and you can get another in the Ancient Cave. Equipping them on Guy and Dekar works really well against Gold Dragons in those last levels. Just make sure you have enough IP for the Master Jelly, though!
I probably should get Lufia IV. I mean, it HAS the Ancient Cave after all. -CSM (edit) Although I spent a large number of hours on the Ancient Cave, I spent a similar number of hours trying to figure This one out, and having fun doing it and listening to the cheesy (yet awesome) muisic.
