Okay, if you're at all familiar with a Low Level Game, you will understand my problem.
My party is currently Gau, Edgar and Locke, I have just fought boss No. 128 from the Magitek Factory, and am now up to the Crane Boss. I thought No. 128 would be hard and the Cranes would be cake. I was ridiculously incorrect. Gau is currently a level 9, making him my highest character. Edgar and Locke are both 8's. I'm playing off a console, not an emulator, so I couldn't take off the exp gain from certain parts (those purple mag roaders leveled Locke up two levels :\) Anyway, basically I need help with Cranes. Here's the problem. The battle progresses somewhat smoothly after I cast Carbuncle to deter their magical attacks (which in turn heals them, but saves my characters), but their physical attacks mudered me. Also, apparently casting Carbuncle + Phantom doesn't work, as the magic cuts through the reflect. Carbuncle also seems to wear off after awhile... And lastly the cranes use Magnitude 8 (I can't tell which one however), and I believe this would cause problems if I found out how to stop their normal physical and magical attacks from destroying me :\ All and any help is greatly appreciated. -------------------- "A little tight, but the price was right" - Locke "Oh, what a Fuddy Duddy" - Relm "..." - Shadow "I'm a General, not some love starved twit" - Celes "Although Edgar showers his attention on the ladies, most are smart enough to pay him no attention. You should have a few bolt rods in storage.
Slap a pair of earrings on Gau and use the rods. It'll do very high damage. I did 2000+ per hit, I believe. Once you're out, just try to hold out as long as you can; one of the two cranes should be nearly dead. If you have Cyan, you can use SwdTech by hitting A twice; it's like a regular attack that does extra damage for free. That's one of the tougher parts; the IAF is even worse though. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Bolt Rods
Wow, methinks I'm screwed. Anyway, I think your info may be a bit off, the cranes have 1800, 2400 (2200 maybe?) Respectively, and the left one absorbs lightning... The bolt rods would demolish the right crane, however... Anyway, I think I need some sort of uber strategy to save me. Are the cranes at all vulnerable to effects such as... Vanish/Doom? Beserk? Mute? etc... If anyone could tell me if they're vulnerable to anything, please tell And thanks for the input, Silverlance. Yeah, I could be a little off, it's been nearly a year since I did an LLG with FF6.
ANY enemy is vulnerable to vanish/doom, but at this point I'd be surprised if you had it. If you don't have a bolt rod with you, you're a little screwed because it takes out one of the two cranes in one hit. The two cranes have different elements and Gau's rages will only cover one of them. If you could use a bolt rod, Gau can use pteranodon to do 350-450 damage with fireball (and avoid magnitude 8.) Setzer can heal with his slots if he doesn't die right away; if you're lucky (or use the derigging faq MasterZ came up with) you can probably get some VERY good damage in there with the slots. Wall rings are essential, otherwise you'll die VERY fast. These guys hit hard and the last thing you want is a Fire 2 following up a Magnitude 8. Gau should have 2 earrings to max out his damage, so keep the phoenix downs coming. Your best bet, if you can't follow up with this strategy, is to use Setzer's slots and hope for some really useful stuff. The derigging faq might help get you out of a tough spot. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Thanks, the info is really helping.
It's possible to get vanish and doom, but for me to get it now would probably level up my characters a good solid 5 levels at least... I think my only hope is Setzer landing some insane Slot combination that destroys the cranes instantly... ...yay... Basically, right at the start of the fight, use an echo screen and then slots. I forgot if they have an opening attack, but if not, you've pretty much right there. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Let's get back to the words 'Thunder Rod' so other people know what you're talking about!
While the Cranes are the first bosses you face with the possibility of you having the Vanish and Doom spells, both are immune to the Clear status so it won't work (contrary to what SilverLance said, some monsters and bosses are immune to Clear, making Vanish/Doom useless). Wall Rings, absolutely. If you have Float, cast it too (you can't simply do so before the battle sadly) to protect against Magnitude8. Float cuts through the Reflect status, so no worries there. I'd advise against using the Thunder Rod, as you'll want to save it for Air Force. Have Gau Rage Anguiform; his Aqua Rake attack is extremely powerful and hits a weakness on both Cranes. Have other people standby for Potion using (maybe a Chainsaw attack if you're sure you don't need Potions at the moment). -------------------- |

I apologize in advance for reviving this dead topic, but I considered creating a new one to be worse...
I wish to share my victory with all of CoN. After 27 days of not being able to take out the Cranes (wow... lol) I finally managed it. My party was: Locke, Edgar, Gau and Setzer. Gau had 2 earrings, Locke had a wall ring and running shoes, and Edgar had a Hyper Wrist and Running Shoes. My strategy was so: Locke would cast Carbunkle for reflect, then go on the defensive, Edgar would start attacking with Drill/heal, Gau would cast Bismarck, dealing about 550-600 damage to both Cranes, then start using Pterdon, and Setzer would die. Well, after what must've been my 50th time, this is what happened: Locke casts Carbunkle, Gau casts Bismark, and then the two of them get killed because the Cranes countered :\ Setzer gets off an H-Bomb surprisingly, about 350 damage, then a 7-flush (400), then a Chocobop (350), which finally gets him killed. Edgar had used drill twice or thrice on the right Crane so it managed to die with Setzer's Chocobop, then, with Edgar at 40 hp, I used drill on the left Crane. It died. I screamed in joy. So, for my pathetic Lightning-rodless soul this is a great victory for me. Sorry if my story bored you, but I'm pretty damn happy right now, lol. Congrats mate, that's one of the harder battles because you can't do much planning ahead before it.
Your next milestone is the IAF. And' she daaaaaayum hard, yo. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Wow you sure had a hard time... I think I defeated them on the second or third try. I used wall rings and I was mostly relying on Gau's Giga Volt which is as powerful as Bolt 3 IIRC. It's sad that the weakest is the one weak agaisnt lightning.
Got to be quick in that battle but I was lucky, it used Magnitude 8 and the only character alive was Gau, then he used Giga Volt to turn it into pieces of junk. Gau, Gau, Go! But don't think that's it's the hardest part in the game. This post has been edited by Zodiac on 8th April 2006 20:27 -------------------- Sayonara |

Quote Does it make me a loser to say that I was impressed with that story? Not at all Celes of Blades ;D And the battle wouldn't of been hard in the least if I had a Lightning Rod >< Particularly difficult if you were as stupid as me and decided not to prepare. Anyway, yeah, I have a plan for IAF - I'm going to equip all my characters with Dragoon boots and pray So - please do leave me tips if you have them ;D -------------------- "A little tight, but the price was right" - Locke "Oh, what a Fuddy Duddy" - Relm "..." - Shadow "I'm a General, not some love starved twit" - Celes "Although Edgar showers his attention on the ladies, most are smart enough to pay him no attention. If you're theist, use the Power of Prayer
If you're not, use the Power of Luck Either has the same effect here. This was, for me, the hardest battle of the LLG challenge (NLG, actually, but it doesn't make too much of a difference.) Afterwards you have Atma, whom you can rasp away at and mass-phoenix down your party when wall rings don't cut it, then that stupid thing before the world ends (who sometimes dies when hit with Death - worked on the first try for me.) Then you're pretty much moments away from being able to get your hands on 128+ MDef, which makes you an indestructible tank. Technically, you're nearing the end of the challenge, so hang in there. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Last I checked, if your party is all floating they should be able to dodge Magnitude8...you can learn Float from Stray, one of the first four espers you get, and you can go to the veldt just before the opera house to learn some new spells...but anyway when I went through that part, I had learned all the spells from the first four espers on all three of my characters, so I just cast float before the battle on all my guys and then used Giga Volt until one was dead, continuously using phoenix downs and potions in the process, then I killed Gau and revived him again and switched to Pterodon. That strategy worked on the first try and I was able to avoid Magnitude8 entirely...but I nearly got wiped out a few times, only Gau and Cyan survived in the end

Congratulations. Next time just use Joker 777 like I did when I did a LLG and got a Tincture instead of a Thunder Rod.
