Me neither, only being able to use them once a battle is kind of annoying. Using magic is easier.

I seldom use the Espers. Not b/c I dislike them or anything like that, but I tend towards physical attacks for just about everyone.

Only really the effect ones (Cait Sith, Phantom, Zone Seeker, etc.) But only until I get things to use that effect, but more than once a battle

Ironically, while summons play a larger part in the plot of FFVI than any other FF save FFX, they are probably the weakest in the series.
I used some of the support ones, like once. -------------------- |

It's so true. Espers are a major component of the story and provide so much of the power that is in the game... yet their summons are costly and not terribly effective.
Go figure. |

I used espers purely to learn magic. I never cared about stat bonuses; I rarely summoned espers to do stuff (even to make items out of enemies, because that had a pretty annoyingly low success rate), mainly because they had a pretty low attack power and I could only use them once per battle.

I almost never use them as summons. One or two of them will do in a pinch (your character hasn't learned the relevent spell yet), but they cost too much MP to really be worthwhile. The stat bonuses, however, completely break the game if you pay attention.

Usually, I use them mostly for learning spells and for the stat bonuses, because they make a huge difference in the way your characters grow, especially if you pay attention.
The summons themselves, I tend to use up until I learn the desired spells and if I want a change from using the spells I've already learned, though I agree that they are very costly in terms of MP and hardly worth it once you've learned spells that cost less and dish out more damage. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I use them when I'm lower in the levels of whatever boss I'm fighting but once my levels get up in the 70's-90's I stick to other magical attacks as well as physical.

GMH, you are aware that the only way to gain higher stats - besides HP and MP, which are the only ones handled by routine leveling - is via Esper bonuses? That's not including the small stat boosts you get from optimum equipment since those bring very li'l to the table in terms of maxing the characters' power and speed (not to mention those stats disappear/plummet if you unequip). Rest assured, the Esper stat bonuses are extremely handy, unless you're intentionally nixing 'em to make the game that much more of a challenge. If you do get 'round to using the Esper bonuses at some point, I can guarantee you'll see one heckuva overall change in the magical and physical power of your party members. As for me, I only really use 'em for the aforementioned stat boosts, especially to max out the speed, magic power and occasionally strength of everyone. They're rather crucial for learning the best spells as well, so that'd be their other use. I don't normally summon in ANY Final Fantasy game ('sides when doing so is actually helpful, like in FFIV, or when you're required to on a whim, like in FFX), but I've been known to once in a while in VI, just for fun. Well, my party did get stat boosts; they'd very likely level up while learning magic, and I tried to get my party to learn spells as quickly as possible by making sure that everyone was always equipped with an esper that had magic they didn't yet know (if possible). What I meant was that I never bothered to plan for such--whatever stat boosts came just came, and I didn't bother, say, to equip magic-attack-boosting espers to Cyan because of his low magic attack stat. I didn't find the game to be difficult at all. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I never really used espers either. I mostly, like ya'll said, used them to learn all the magic and some stat bonuses. I only used espers like two times in the whole game, and that was with Rumah because I was just starting to learn magic and needed his help at the end of battles. When I got my first sign of magic, never used them like that again.

The only time i actually use espers is with really strong espers like bahamut and ragnorok (yes, that summon!)
All the rest of the time i use them for stat bonuses and learning magic, as mentioned by many! -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. only time i use espers...well, the only esper I use, is crusader, and that is if I don't feel like workin so hard during random battles in the WoR
Other than that...no. I mean, I already have a set-up for who gets what spells in what order, that I have been using for years now (how sad) -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Enjoy. I was a soldier, now I just play one in video games. |

I don't think I've ever really used Summons of any type in ff's. FF7 they were a waste of MP, FF9 and X I didn't care for them at all. In 10 I thought Yuna was too valuable as a healer although they made good tanks for damage I suppose. FF6 I went through the whole game without summoning, just a waste of time and mp. FF4 I didn't use them ever, idk summons are cool and all just not that useful ultimately, they're really good for getting out of tight situations when you're too low of level though i suppose. The only game I found summons somewhat useful was tactics.

In FF4, they are absolutely essential. I can't imagine that game without summoning.
But FF6, they for sure are not so useful only because they are very weak. But I once used a magacite item while batteling Mage Master (and my entire party was close to dead), and luckily it summoned Sraphim....that was some battle! -------------------- I'VE HAD AN ETERNITY TO PONDER THE MEANING OF THINGS. I haven't used Espers yet because, like Desparation attacks, I don't know how to use them. Feel free to instruct me so I don't seem like the idiot I am further lol.
Like everyone else, though, I have been using them to learn magic and give the applicable stat bonuses while characters are learning magic, but otherwise, they've seen no combat, nor have they needed to yet. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time!
