The other day in gym class my gym teacher told us we were playing pickleball.  This game is playe dlike tenis but instead of a racket you use a ping-pong paddle and instead of a tennis ball you use a wiffel ball.  But when he was explaining the rules i couldn't help but wonder if he had made it up, so i was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of it and if so, is it true that the game is named after a dog??

Um...did you just describe a beginner's version of ping-pong? Using a larger ball to make it easier to hit?

Heh, actually I've played pickleball in my Phy. Ed. class before in high school. I think isnt' that the one where the nets are at tennis net level but it's played on a badminton size court? Heh, it was actually kinda fun, tho being tall doesn't help. :p I couldn't stand bending over half the time to hit that foam wiffle ball.

No, it's played on a tennis court (or a "similutated" tennis court [ie: gym or whatever]). Like what was said, you have a table tennis paddle and a wiffle ball and it's played much like badmitton.
I used to play this game all the time last year when I was on the tennis team. We didn't call it Pickleball though. It was just called a skill exercise. Rather tough to play. Sorta reminds me of the game Pepper (associated with baseball) for tennis.

I don't like my gym teacher, he makes us do crappy games that he invents, like where you play basketball and you aren't allowed to touch the ball with your hands(exageration..) but yeah, we played pickleball.

I don't know about that dog...

But I got a funny story about pickleball.  We were in Gym, right?  I decided I was 'too cool' to play this game.  (or was just to lazy...not sure)  So then my friend (who was on the opposing team) decidied to serve at me and well...I wasn't paying attention and got hit in the 'family jewels.'  Hence why I like batmiton better then pickleball...

It's not an easy game to play, but it's not bad. Played it in HS PE, like most of you. I still prefer racquetball to all other racquet sports.

Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Or perhaps buying a really good looking shirt?

you know, if this is the kind of stuff that they make up in the US for PE/Gym, it makes Scotlands 'muck about on a gravel pitch with everyone playing a diffrent ball game from everyone else seem sane... im not kidding, once one of us was trying to play proper footie, and soome else started to play rugby.... it was mental! :E

I enjoyed Pickleball in PE, But my favorit PE sport was pillow polo. Don't laugh, all the Jocks jumped at the chance to play pillow polo. It's basically Hockey played with very large cue-tips (the little sticks you clean your ear with). It was fun because you didn't have to worry about hurting anyone with your big nerf-like cue-tip. A rather exciteing, fast paced game, though a bit strange. Anyone else ever even heard of it?

I know the game you're describing, Iain. That was a really cool game. We dont' call it pillow polo though. We just call it, pretty mundanely, Q-Tip Hockey. It's an extremely popular PE game in our school that it was added to our school's WinterCarnival schedule in February.
My favorite PE Sport to play was always Capture the Flag (everyone knows that game) and floor hockey (what it is: hockey played on a gym floor: no skates or roller blades or anything)
