I never predicted that the emperor would die. (Or Kefka likewise get god-like powers and enslave the world.) Because, well, usually, the bad guy doesn't really get to destroy the world
![]() The rest weren't so big surprises to me. -------------------- |

The reason I picked Gau's father was because I never knew that cut-scene existed until a few years after I got the game. So to me, it was a shock.
The end of the world was a big thing too, but I knoew about it because i used the strategy guide the first time I played the game. Keka killing ghestal was a huge twist as well. -------------------- I'VE HAD AN ETERNITY TO PONDER THE MEANING OF THINGS. AND NOW I HAVE AN ANSWER... |

Shadow's ending surprised me. At least, one of the two; I wasn't expecting to see this otherwise boring and uninteresting character finally manifest a personality and some emotions. It made him suddently feel like he did progress throughout the storyline instead of just being a cliché emotionless ninja.
Who banged a chick in some remote backwater village of mages and left her soon after. Irresponsible prick. ![]() THEN WHO FRIKIN' GOES OFF AND KILL HIMSELF JUST TO PROVE A POINT? Way to try to bring up your kid when the world's finally at peace, ass. ![]() Yep, surprised me allright. Square should've developed him throughout the course of the game (dream sequences don't count since they're his past, not the present) instead of staking everything on a sketchy flashback then finally making him evolve in the last five seconds of his existence. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I picked Kefka killing Ghestal, since I really wasn't waiting for this to happen. He even thew him like trash, that was really suprising of him knowing that he was totally on his side until he moved the statues.
Too bad for Ghestal that Kefka was using him for his own ambitions. He was a great mage, even able to cast Merton (which would have been suicide). Totally fooled by a crazy minded maniac with french clothes. BUT, he deserved it that's for sure. -------------------- Sayonara |

I think it was the world actually getting destroyed. Finally, a script-writer made good on that "promise", and followed through with the plot element (instead of having the world saved in the nick of time).
On the other hand, though, I had the whole Leo deal spoiled for me beforehand, so I can't really say if it should actually be that... -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. The Shadow one, because I sorta expected the others to happen except for the world destroyed, which I saw online first.

I'd say Kefka killing Ghestal. I was pretty sure that the end-of the world thing was gonna happen (or something LIKE it; any kind of big catastrophe seemed imminent), but I didn't expect Kefka to end up being the true bad guy.

Aw, I thought that Gestahl really did change after the peace treaty. I thought he turned into a good guy, but he was a meanie all along. Shame on him.

The world actually getting destroyed was the only one of these that really surprised me. A lot of the rest of them were either really predictable (like Kefka betraying Gestahl) or largely inconsequential (like Shadow being Relm's father) or both (like Gau being the crazy man's son).

I would say Kefka killing Gestahl. After Gestahl betrayed the Returners and let Kefka out of jail it was obvious that he was just as big a bad guy, but he wasn't as crazy as Kefka and that was his downfall.
The end of the world didn't surprise me as much, because the SNES game came with a map of the world of balance and on the back there was a map for the "world of ruin" which kind of gave that plot twist away. |

The backstabbing, that was hard. He even pulled his troops out of the invaded towns, so I tought maybe the Emperor was changing, and then you all know wat happens...

Oh! And Shadow showing himself as an stupid looser was as suprising as desapointing... That scene really pieced off my ending...

![]() In times of great need, this button will show you the way... ![]() One thing not mentionned was finding out you could also save Cid. The first time I played, I fed him anything I'd catch (yummeh rotten fish!) and he died. So I figured, meh, it's a time-wasting event where Cid just plain dies (must've spent ~2 hours feeding him good fish, then washing it down with rotten fishies; he kept hovering between sick and healthy!) Then I heard you could make him survive and finally understood how the "minigame" worked. Now? I never know wether to kill him or not. So I just let nature sort it out. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I was going to say that after fghting Atma Weapon, I had to fight Atma later on. That was very shocking for me. But of the things, Kefka becoming God. Who could've guess that?

i feel that shadow being relms father was a shocker because shadow never got to see his own daughter grow up i mean that would kill me if i was in his position
and relm she didnt even know her father that has to be traumatizing as a child but at least she had strago to deal with it but she must have thought at some point maybe my parents didnt love me..... -------------------- Marion Gaborik is my hero :D |

some of the most choking plots in the game, in my opinion, were not mentioned,
but i agree with the end-of-the-world-ish thingie, also the part mentioning the end of the magic in the world, and the inminent death of Terra, was more like a ![]() ![]() |

When I first played the game, I had a hard time beating the Ultima Beast and it took me like months to level up were I needed to be (wanted to play the first game without cheat codes/cheats/secrets). After I finally beat it and saw kefka get god-like powers and the end of the world, I thought that was game over and I had done something wrong!

Hands down, my vote goes to the world getting destroyed. First time I bore witness to that, I figured I had done something wrong - the same way a player screws up his or her Chrono Trigger game when they swoon at the hands of Lavos. Freaky stuff.
With some notable exceptions though, I more or less saw the rest of those turns coming. -------------------- You are not your username. You are not your avatar. The world being destroyed thing, for sure. I mean, the bad guy actually succeeded in destroying the world for once - I didn't see it coming first time 'round, and it came as a genuine shock to me. I spent the scene half thinking 'wtf,' half wondering whether that was the end of the game and if so - how odd.

I was going to say Terra is an esper, but that wasn't as big as the turning point of that actual game (WoB to WoR).
Let's face it - if that wasn't a plot twist I don't know what defines one. The world went into ruins, Kefka controls it, and your friends are scattered to the far reaches of the world, not to mention the hellspawn demons of centuries past have respawned to kick your tush. And, to top it all off - not only new terrain, a new overworld theme. New Overworld Themes usually mark some signficant change or progression through plot. Terra's esper thing is a def second, though. -------------------- "A little tight, but the price was right" - Locke "Oh, what a Fuddy Duddy" - Relm "..." - Shadow "I'm a General, not some love starved twit" - Celes "Although Edgar showers his attention on the ladies, most are smart enough to pay him no attention.
