Now I don't consider that to be especially evil, especially since that's the whole reason copyrights were invented in the first place, but I'm just sayin' that Square is a pretty evil company nowadays nonetheless. Yeah, they're trying to make a profit, but it's possible to make money WITHOUT being evil. But one thing you said caught my eye: "...the more money you make, the harder you have to work to keep up." I suppose that's true, which would also explain why companies never start out evil, they merely end up being that way after becoming corporate monoliths, which happens because of good intentions, such as having more money to make better games. So it's not really that Square's all that evil, because just about every other corporation of their size is the same way. They just seem evil compared to smaller Developers that aren't as concerned about turning a large profit, because they don't HAVE to turn a large profit.
Now that I think about it, that's one of the reasons I like Sakaguchi so much. To heck with Final Fantasy, the reason I like the guy is that he saw what Square had turned into (out of good intentions, mind you), and he decided to start anew, with a small, honest (hopefully), and skilled set of developers (and the financial backing of Microsoft, good move on that one). When companies get bigger, they inevitable are forced to become more evil. I guess that IS just how the world works. ![]() -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

So the argument here is that Square is evil because they protect they're product with copywrites? and enforce it? For shame... my God how could they?

Square isn't evil, they're just mean. And they've gotten really not cool ever since 2002. If you guys are referring to CT Ressurection by Square's lack of niceness to fan games, they're just trying to protect themselves. That doesn't make it right for them to bully fans (especially ones who are sick of waiting for Chrono Break), though, but it does make it legit.
It's really a legal gray area, as whether or not it falls under fair use. If you're releasing it as a nonprofit game, then most of the powers that be let them slide (CTR was really big, and that's why Square stopped it). But if you're making a profit off of it, then Square starts having the rights to sue. It IS their property after all, sadly. To be fair, though Square gets away with stealing quite a bit. Just look at half their games and tell me there's not a ripoff of something else in there. -CSM -------------------- The NEW Final Fantasy Wiki! Join us! |

ultimage, that's not why they're evil. They're evil in many other ways, as well. And yeah, they're protecting themselves by shutting down remakes and other stuff, but like Crazyswordsman said, many other corporatoins let that slide, if it's not for profit. I mean, it's not like they aren't allowed to be uber-strict about their copyrights, that's what they were invented for in the first place!
But Square is evi... MEAN regardless. Especially in these last few years. -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

Quote (Spiffyness @ 3rd March 2006 20:52) If it is for non-profit, then their usage is guaranteed by fair use (in the States at the very least). Notice the vast quantity of fan material on this site alone that uses Squaresoft intellectual property. The fact that they had a legal leg to stand on would suggest there was money involved. And yeah, they're protecting themselves by shutting down remakes and other stuff, but like Crazyswordsman said, many other corporatoins let that slide, if it's not for profit. Quote (Spiffyness @ 3rd March 2006 20:52) Same with patent portfolios, but most companies have them as defensive rather than offensive tools. Just because they can doesn't mean they should.I mean, it's not like they aren't allowed to be uber-strict about their copyrights, that's what they were invented for in the first place! Quote (Spiffyness @ 3rd March 2006 20:52) Examples? I didn't think Square did anything of note in the past couple years. Even their flagship products have floundered. But Square is evi... MEAN regardless. Especially in these last few years. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |
