There was a rumor I once tried that said one could get a red mage if all magic classes were mastered before Elmdor was rescued in Sand Rat Cellar. I went along doing it and power-leveled to 80+ until I realized that you can't master the summoner class without Zodiac. Instant failure.

As for an actual reason as to why they didn't indulge the players, it's probably because blue mages would be overly powerful, supposing they got skills from each monster/class, and red mages would be mediocre since they tend to be jacks of all trades and masters of none (I think that's the phrase).

Blue Magic is in the game. The most powerful versions of basic spells can all be learned via Blue Magic. That is if you cast Fire 4 on someone who's current class is a Black Wizard, they have a chance of learning it. Ramza's Squire class can learn Ultima by means of Blue Magic, in fact this is where most people are introduced to it.

For a Red Mage, I have a Priest with Black Magic or a Wizard with White Magic and Equip Sword ability with a Bracer to give that balance between power and magic or Calculator with some physical attack-oriented skillset like Battle Skill or Punch Arts. As for Blue Mages, I think the addition of monsters into your party nullifies the use of them (in the creators' minds) since, traditionally, Blue Magic is traditionally described as monsters'/enemies' skills/abilities.

Learning human skills and learning monsters' skills are different, though, but the connection is there in a rather thin form. Most people think of blue magic as gaining spells otherwise unavailable to a type of unit and only accessible through X amounts of enemies.

For a Red Mage, I have a ... Calculator with some physical attack-oriented skillset like Battle Skill or Punch Arts.

Calculators have horrific speed (about ½ what a normal character has) and a lower MA than a lot of the physical classes. You'd be much better off giving a Knight or Monk the Math Skill skillset than the other way around. Especially the Knight, since s/he can equip robes (Wizard Robe being my favorite for this purpose), a Rune Blade, and an Aegis Shield.

Then again, trying to use a Calculator effectively does make for an interesting challenge...

Great point. Just leveling up as a Calculator to learn the awwesome Math Skills was a pain, but once they're learned, it pays off! I like the Knight with Math Skill set-up myself just as long as he/she has good MA (i.e. Magic Gauntlet, Magic Attack Up).

Well math magic is just really powerful. Getting it is the same as getting Orlandu, it pretty much makes the rest of the game easy.

Someone did point out that the traditional Red Wizard is pretty easy to replicate in the game.

Priest class
Black Magic
Equip Sword

Voila!

Well, since you can have secondary abilities, there's no opint for Red Magic. Same with Blue. Since you can control monsters, then BM is pointless.
