Quote (Mimic @ 1st January 2006 20:59) Naturally, I'd expect repayment, and maybe even alittle interest, but by the sounds of this, I've got a pretty good life with him and can live for a while without an XBOX 360. Quote (Zodiac @ 1st January 2006 10:54) I could lend SOME money, not all, but I surely won't give it. If you really want it that clear, I would GIVE him the money if he pays me back. But I don't call it giving anymore, it's lending. For the bank scenario: There's no need to play heroes, and revealing yourself could bring the two criminals involving civilians as hostages. I wonder why I would be carrying a gun of duty, well if I wasn't in America... Damn I'm not a cop ![]() Edit Think I forgot to read a line somewhere... Again, for the sake of discussion, please make your choice based on the information given... not on X factors that are not mentioned. For the purposes of this situation, assume you are all alone. Ne bank security, no backup.
The situation, again. You are an off-duty cop waiting in line in a bank lobby for a teller. You are in plain clothes, and are carrying your gun in a shoulder holster under your jacket. Suddenly, you hear gunshots. You turn to see two masked, shotgun wielding men at the door. They demand everyone get on the floor, and you all do. one stays at the door, while the other proceeds to the first teller and begins bagging cash from her till. You are not on duty, and in fact you were only there to get out a few bucks so you could rent a movie and get a pizza for you and the wife and kids when you got home. The criminals have not shot or seriously harmed anyone yet. So, what do you do? Let the situation ride out, and hope no one gets hurt? Or do you pull your gun and make a stand? -------------------- Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people - and kill them. ~Pacifist Badge, 1978 |

I would stay on the floor, especially as there are two of them.
There's bravery and there's stupidity, taking on two guys with shotguns on my own is silly. I don't have a death wish and I must think of the family who I must look after as well. I'm a policeman, not a super hero and my family depends on me and want me to come home alive I'm sure. -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

interesting situation. I would probabl let it play out a little, and fire a cap into the air to freak them out. As soon as a shotgun is fired, the robber's gone, all from the safety of the floor.

If I'm not in my uniform, then I probably won't due to the fact that they won't know they're dealing witht the law. If someone else tries to make a stand, and gets injured, then that's where I'd probably draw the line, or at least try to take advantage of the distraction. So I stay on the floor until they make a dangerous move.

A few bucks I would have used the ATM.
A cop off duty knows without his weapon in his hand is at a disadvantage outnumbered and out gunned. He also knows a reckless act on his part could cost someone else their life and lose a loved family member as well. I would be pretty ticked but in those situations common sense would kick in and I'd get on the floor too. If my collegues knew I was in there it would put extra pressure on them as some of them would know me. Plus my info would be invaluable in the investigation whether they got away or not. |

I stay down on the floor.
I'm outnumberd and outgunned. If I would do something I could get injured or worse I couldn't do that to my wife and kids. -------------------- It takes 2 people and a weapon to commit a murder Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is mystery, today is a gift, thats why we call it the present. |

Wife and kids for cripes sake. No way I'd stand up now.
Probably take careful notes on their general build (they are masked unfortunately), try and take the getaway car's licesce plate number. If this was a liquor store or somewhere else that's not always so crowded, I might take a stand. But there's probably a dozen and a half people there. It's not worth it to risk other people lives. If they tried something stupid like hurting someone, I'd have no choice. I don't remember who said this, but:
Live to fight another day. Also: Pick and Choose your battles. As stated many times before, I'm outnumbered and outgunned. There are civilians about and if I started something, I could very well get myself and others killed. By now one of the tellers would have hit that silent alarm, so until backup arrives i need to keep my head down. -------------------- Neneko is Neneko because Neneko couldn't be Neneko if Neneko wasn't Neneko! --as quoted from Neneko, Mahoraba {Heartful Days} I can stab a man with a thick paperback book thru the ribcage. |

I would certainly stay down. If I act and fail, then they probably kill me. And having killed one person, my feeling is that they are more likely going to kill more people than if we ride it out. Besides, odds are they will get caught sooner or later anyhow.

Ooh, I'd just love to pull one over on the robbers like in Pulp Fiction, but I'd have to wait and see if they were really going to use their firearms or not. I'd be a little reluctant for just firing off a few shots, not because I could hypothetically hit a civilian, but because each civilian is a potential hostage and frightening the robbers into that position -- should they just be flaunting their guns for the sake of expediting the robbery -- only brings a conflict to a head.
But, man, would I love to show off my aim. ![]() This post has been edited by Shotgunnova on 4th January 2006 09:05 -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

Well, if there happened to be a gun/sword/crossbow handy, I'd go in. But seeing as though I'm off-duty I'd jot down important things like a car registration number and the build of the robbers, and go tell someone. I'm not brave enough to take on two huge men on my own, and my husband and kids would stop me risking my life, I think...

Actually, it's not that simple. Police officers can't simply assasinate thugs with guns if they are not posing a direct threat to the lives of other people. Yes, waving them around is dangerous, but without an actual intent to kill, such as holding a gun to someones face and saying they're going to kill them, or actually shooting into a crowd, for example, shooting the robbers would be murder. As stated above, they have not hurt or killed anyone yet. They probably won't, if no one gets in their way. Standing up and revealing yourself could be the one thing that causes those men to open fire. Money is not worth that risk. I would most definately lie low rather than use senseless heroics that could cost me my life, the lives of innocent civilians, and, if not those scenarios, my career and freedom. As an offduty police officer, I would take on the responsibilty of a diligent citizen, absorbing as much information as I can such as clothes, height, build, and any notable behavioral traits, etc... and report them. -------------------- The first duty in life is to assume a pose, and the second duty is...well, no one's found out yet. |

I don't know about the others, but you sure didn't understand my motives. I'm not worried about random people getting shot. I just wanna make sure that ANYONE who tries to do something like that around me becomes no more than a reminder to those who would follow.

Yes and then you likely get your head blown off in the process, SilverMaduin. I don't think off-duty police officers are supposed to cary their guns around with them. So sure, you can try to stop armed bank robbers with your bare hands, but you're likely not Chuck Norriss. Besides, what do you gain from putting other people's lives in greater danger? It's that kind of attitude that makes North Amercica an increasingly more dangers place to live in, I might add.
The smart thing to do would stay be to stay down and make a mental note of every detail that would help in catching them. There's a time to be a hero, but as someone pointed out earlier, you pick your battles. -------------------- Quote Do you think we're forever? |

Simply enough, the smartest thing to do would be to sit down and wait it out unless they look as if they are going to start shooting at people. The creed of the police is "To Protect and Serve" but you wouldn't be doing anyone a favor, including your family, if you just started shooting at them. Just like in the military, you're a cop 24 hours a day whether you were on duty or not. Your actions, even though you're off duty will be reflected when you see your supervisor again.
In any case, there are too many variables. If you were to miss, you could hit an innocent bystander and then whether you were on duty or not, that's game over for your career assuming you don't get sued and jailed for it. Also, maybe they're quick on the trigger and get you before you can take the shot for the other one. Then they kill 5-10 innocent bystanders themselves in retaliation. There is a reason it is policy at banks and other places of business to give them what they want to avoid getting yourself hurt. Granted a cop doesn't have a luxury like that but if he were smart, he'd wait for the silent alarm to be tripped anyway and some of his buddies come and help. It is a police officer's duty to protect people even if it risks the safety of the officer. -------------------- "Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. Study hard; be evil." |
