Okay, I have the cash/Best Buy credit to purchase one of the next gen handhelds, but I'm having a real hard time deciding which one. Help me out, owners, which way should I go?

Pros for PSP:

-I love the controller itself, it feels much more natural than the DS.
-GTA: Liberty City Stories. I'm a huge fan of the series, and this would be the main game I buy it for.
-Metal Gear Solid Acid and FFVII Advent Children. MGSA seems like a nice idea, but I haven't heard much about FFVII. How is it?
-Music and Movies. I don't know how much I'll buy movies, but I like the music aspect.

Pros for DS:
-WiFi capability. I love the idea of being able to play Mario Kart against people, since no one ever wants to play me around here. If you have a DS, how much do you use this feature, and how easy is it to use?
-Mario Kart. Awesome game.
-Better games. It just seems like Nintendo has a better lineup overall.
-Potential. Nintendo seems to be good at porting classic games and series to it's handheld systems.

I think it will basically come down to how much I can use the wireless multiplayer feature, so I really want to know what DS owners think about that.

I don't have the money to get a PSP or a DS right now but this is a war that is going on in my head. Based on games, I'd get a DS first because there's Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. The PSP does have all those extras going for it but not necessarily the game line up. One thing, however, I will never base me buying a system on is potential. I'm not going to buy a system and wait for good stuff to come out. I"m going to buy the system because something good has come out. If I had waited to compare the games on the N64 v.s. the PSX, I probably never would have bought an N64. I bought the N64 with the potential of a new Earthbound game to come out, it never did. While I did enjoy some N64 games like Paper Mario, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart 64, Zelda, and Star Fox, I may have not bought it because of the lack of games that I like which are RPGs. I don't think that buying a system on potential is a good idea.

For me though, if I were to make the decision right here and now I would choose the DS for the above mentioned games. There just isn't enough out for the PSP that I really know about or want.

Basicly, it depends on wether you want a gaming console, or a media center? I have a PSP because of retro gaming, I run mainly emulators on it, along with listening to music and podcasts, I own only like 2 UMDs. That must piss Sony off, but ah well. When I want a pure gaming handheld, I'll get the DS.

DS Positives:
Final Fantasy games published on the DS (bastards)
PSP Positives:
Download virtually anything onto the PSP
Dynasty Warriors was pretty good on PSP
Emulators (Hell Yes!)
Innovative Technology
PSP Negatives:
Dead Pixels
No FF games (WTF Squaresoft?!)
Emulators Glitchy
Focused more on movie industry than games.

So, atm its 50-50 because of the FF games

Your DS negatives are pretty weak though.

DS Negatives:
An extra screen to pay attention to - That's actually more of a positive. You've obviously never played Castlevania: DoS. That map on the top screen has been so useful lots of times. And that's just one example.

Not Backwards Compatible with GB/C games - I don't see how this is a flaw the PSP isn't backwards compatible with anything.

I already own a PSP. Why buy a second portable? - Because if you enjoy gaming over media with your handheld then the DS is the way to go.



And your list of DS positives is severely lacking. So I'll make one.

DS positives:
Final Fantasy obviously
Backwards compatible with all GBA games giving you an enormous backlog of playable games
Greater 3rd party support from developers (compared to the PSP)
Games like Nintendogs show you that this machine can do things never done before on a handheld
1st party games
Very innovative
DS is a lot cheaper then the PSP
The games on the PSP are about 50$ where as the DS games are usually 30$


Now for my PSP positives and negatives.

PSP positives:
UMDs are pretty cool
Nice screen and sound
FF 7 Advent Children will be exclusive to it for a while

PSP negatives:
More of the same
The majority of it's games are watered down PS2 ports
To be able to use the all of it's capability's fully (like storing music) you need to buy expensive memory sticks, because the one that comes with it is far too small

PSP is what I use to surf the net. Sure it doesn't support Flash (yet) or certain java applets (yet) so it's a little limited, but I get by. I would say get both, one at a time if need be. I'm considering getting a DS as well (begrudgingly), mainly so I can take advantage of the further updated adventures of Final Fantasy.

Go for the DS. Better games, period, with plenty more on the horizon. Despite the PSP's sleek look and impressive media capabilities, the DS consistently outperforms it in both hardware and software sales. Though majority decision isn't always right, this time the consumers are making the smarter choice.

I could go into detail about exactly why the DS is better at this point, but I think the ever-eloquent Tycho Brahe put it very well in his short essay over at Penny Arcade. Well I have owned both so I might as well throw my two cents (I first owned a DS and then traded it for a PSP so I am biased)

Pros for PSP:
Better Graphics then the DS
Control is better, touch screen on is tough to master and really annoying
PSP is constantly upgrading its software (although I wish I had the first version so I could play NES and SNES games on it)
The games for PSP right now are slightly better then DS (i.e. if you ever played Madden 06 for both, the PSP version blows the DS out of the water)
Movies, Music, Pictures, and even TV if you have the right equipment

Pros for DS:
If you like the touch screen than that is one I guess...I personally hated it
Wi-Fi
It is Nintendo who has dominated portables for over a decade so far so you know they have a few tricks up their sleeve.
You can still play GBA Advance games on the DS

I would recommend the PSP personally but to each his/her own.

Gotta be the DS, mainly since u can play GBA games on it, and there are a load of good games, PSP is just too expensive, overall DS wins!

So DS is compatable with GBA? That's good, cause I'm fairly certain I'm getting a DS, mostly because I want to finally be able to play part 3... though I still wish they'd give us something closer to the original.

Though I realise you've made your descision, I'd just like to express that, in my humble opinion, you made the right one. I got a PSP for Christmas and I couldn't be happier with it. I've got gaming, I've got videos, I've got my music, I've got my photos and I've even got the internet in one device that I can use on the toilet, for God's sake. Countless times have I wished I could have the internet or GTA in the bathroom, it's like a dream come true, and while I admit that the DS has a better range of quality games, the multi-media style of the PSP just makes it so very much more appealing to me. And the 2-player mode on GTA is absolutely fantastic.

I'm just gonna expand upon what Mimic said, because I do agree wtih his prespective on the uses for both machines. I myself am a gamer, and don't want to buy a multimedia machine at a more expensive price. PSP has a nice rounded experience with music, internet, and movies, with a few games that are really good. The DS has a gigantic library of awesome first and third party titles, most of which are awesome. The two screens can be a little hard to manage, but most of the best games just use the touch creen and will use the top screen for some unimportant display or menu. Going into more details about games, DS has some pretty eccentric games, and dominates the platforming, adventure, and puzzle games. The PSP has much better sports games, some okay action titles, and the odd FPS. Personally I'm a fan of the games seen on the DS, and it's cheap price doesn't exactly hurt either. The real strength in the PSP lies in it's multimedia purposes, as Mimic said, whereas the DS has some real innovative and fun games. Both have Wifi, but the DS has better games to play Wifi as I see it.

I guess it all just depends on your tastes.

I agree. As much as I love the media capabilities, I love the DS for the games, and frankly, I buy my systems for games, not the ability to play MP3s and go online and such. When I want to listen to music, I use a music player. When I want to play games, I will use a DS. Which has been selling better btw?

I already have a PSP. Got one for my birthday last June As I said earlier, I just want to play the updated (again. sigh) FF games. Being that the DS is pretty cheap, and should be able to a used one cheaper, it doesn't seem like such a bad idea.
