Well I was recently looking for a new rpg to sink my teeth into, and I stumbled upon this little beauty. Game style is almost Zelda style, but I can't help but get a bit of a Secret Of Mana bit of flavoring in that game. Story line wise, it's not the best of games, but pretty damn original, and the characters are developed somewhat nicely, slowly at first but more stressed later on. This game also has some almost Sonic the Hedgehog features (tap direction button twice to run, run down a rap and clear a jump, or do a loop or whatever) which is also cool. So anyone else play this game, and what did they think of it?

I've played that game. I actually think I'm one of the few who actually like it. The translations not great, but it has a decent story once you get so far. It's interesting seeing how the journey changes the characters, and what happens to them during it.

I remember playing that game. I think I still own the cartridge too.
It's story was pretty original. I don't think it was the greatest, but it was pretty original. Every one of Will's friends have their own unique personalities. I agree that the game has a Legend of Zelda/Secret of Mana control to it. That's the first thing I thought of when I played it, actually. Anyway, it's a good game. It makes me want to play it again. ![]() -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

IoG was one of my first rentals. I rented it a few times after that until I beat it, then couldn't find it for purchase in any store. That game rules.
Since it's Enix, it's similar to their other games like Soul Blazer, which also kicks ass. |

Yeah Soul Blazer is an awesome game, the way you have to destroy things to free spirits and restore the world.
Something I noticed about IoG is that, time passes by rather quickly, the internal game clock is pretty fast. I think it's one of my favorite Enix games. Like Sabin said, Freedan ownz. I loved how that worked, I mean it was pretty sweet to go from Will who was smaller and a bit quicker to Freedan who was like a powerhouse, not to mention his further range was crucial to getting further in the game at some points. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I played Illusion, but didn't get further than maybe 3/5s of the game (hey, I was a kid, the puzzles were tough!) . It was good, but I don't really remember anything about it other than collecting some 40 rubies or something like that.

One of the first few RPG's I beat.
I liked the game, quite a bit. I just REALLY hated the ending. -.-; -------------------- ..DDR..Maine.. ..Hikaroo-chan no Deviantart.. <Tiddles> And I love how people suggest "Why not call it my great name?????" when their name is clearly the worst thing ever. <Tiddles> "How about ; Mozilla Xplorer & Mozilla Xpress." <Tiddles> How about you die in a fire? |

I really liked IoG, but I will never like the Mu. The first time I played it, it took me five hours to defeat the vampires because I could never figure out how to get Freedan to them. The second time through, I discovered how magical save states can be and won in 10 minutes. All in all, it was a very entertaining game, but I didn't like how the text had varying speeds, so sometimes you'd wait for it to go by and other times it would pop up instantly (and when they were like that at the same time, I would usually miss a message).

That is my least favorite part of the game. I, too, could not figure out how to use Freedan on the vampire boss. Fortunatly, I have figured that out since then. ![]() -------------------- "So in the end I will be-what I will be No loyal friend Was ever there for me" -Gollum's Song, Emiliana Torrini |

I found Mu to be kinda dificult to do. I knew how to get Freedan there and the save points, but i couldn't really figure out much about it the first time through.
Mu has my favorite musical score in the game, though. So that kinda makes up for it. -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

Bwaha! I've been waiting for somone to make a topic about this game. I loved it, when I was a kid I constantly switched between IoG, SoM, FF6, and Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen.

I always liked the boss music in this game, and the music from the floating garden place (above the big phoenix-esque sand painting). The music was definitely one of this game's strong points.

Yeah the music in that game is really great. So is the scenery. I really like the worlds and such, it's really colorful, but not in the bad way, that makes everything seem childish.
The game was overall, really well done, I mean not an epic rpg, but if it was a little more devloped story wise, it would be truly a game to remember. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I'm reviving this topic to say that I think this game is pretty good. I emulated it and I love the music and the battle system But I never could get past the 1st boss. Can someone remember enough about the game to give a good strategy on him? He has the hands and head peeking out.

Don't run around behind him, you'll just run into his head and take massive damage, and there is less room to dodge
Make sure you are the Dark Knight (can't remember name, its been so long) Hit the hands then his head, run around back and forth in front of him so you take least amoun of damage as possible. attack the head when you can. Got Bread? use it. If you die, don't keep going just restart. Its a pain, but what Items you used don't come back. Last is a little bit of luck, he's a tough cookie, one of the most difficult bosses in the game. I love this game. I started playing it again recently and made it all the way to the last dungeon Possible spoilers: highlight to view and stopped right before the final boss. I remember this game. I bought it years ago, with a free T-shirt! The shirt didn't last and I lost the game some time ago, but I got a new copy.
This is a fine game and all, but I have to recommed Terranigma more though. It's pseudo-sequal. Problem is it was only released in Japan and Europe. If you can get your hands on it, it's an even better game. More to do, more to like and all that jazz. Oh, and no one likes Mu. you know, i just got through re-playing this game not too long ago...maybe 3 months. it really is a wonderful game; i'd certainly have to say it is one of the best AND most underrated games on snes. my only complaint with this game is that if you miss something in certain areas, it is impossible to go back and get them -- so if, say, you somehow missed ONE enemy in a dungeon somewhere that you cannot re-access, you won't have a perfect game.
[quote]Oh, and no one likes Mu.[quote] hmm, so much hate for mu here. mu is my favourite dungeon in iog. it was kind of annoying at times with all the running back and forth, but the whole lowering the water levels and ahving to slide thru walls was really cool. made you really use your "explorer's sense," for lack of a better term. the dungoen that i found most troubling was angkor wat, because the enemies take like half your life for hitting you once. |

gozaru~, don't get me wrong. Mu was a good dungeon, tedious, but full of adventure and discovery and the like. But the challenge of it is pretty dang high. The boss there is the hardest by far.
And remember, Ankor Wat had those crazy living bushes! Also I thought that was the coolest dungeon, hard, but cool. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. Illusion of Gaia is a great game, yup. Me likes it quite a bit. The translation, though lacking in any actual ERRORS, was pretty dry, although the plot behind it was cool. One thing I really liked was how Will narrated the plot, and especially how the adventure actually took place over a very long period of time. Sequences that many found boring (the raft, the tunnel...), I liked quite a bit, for some reason or another. The gameplay was a blast, and Mu would've been my favorite dungeon if it weren't for those blasted vampires...
