BTW, i am a skilled Roy player, and have been traing against level 9's and have been doing well, i mainly do need tips for going up against characters such as Ganon, Link, Marth, Mario, Fox, Falco, Samus, and Zelda/Sheik. Any help is appreciated.

I went to an MLG-hosted SSBM tournament last summer and fared pretty well in it.

Roy, huh? Use Marth. Marth is a top-tier player, unlike Roy; if you have Roy's moves down, you'll know how to play fine with Marth.

I'm not sure how competitive of a tourney you're talking here. A lot of tips can be gained from searching google or finding videos of the world's best players.

Focus on timing your shield to reflect objects when fighting Samus (such as her charge beam and missles) or Fox. If you time your counterattack right the charge ball and missiles go right through you.

I don't see how you could lose to Link if you have Marth's speed. Use throws constantly since Link's throw is his ultra-slow hookshot.

For Fox and Falco USE THE COUNTERATTACK. If you can get either off of the edge, their recovery will always be countered by your counterattack (the timing isn't really difficult at all).

For Zelda/Sheik, try to meteor smash them. Their combined ability to recover is insane, so you'll have to go for quick finishes.

In general, practice the timing of your counterattacks, shield grabs, meteor smashes, and mini-jumps. (I assume you know how to recover with Marth/Roy - when you're off the edge press over and B repeatedly to help you get back to the platform)

Aw, i wish my school did more vg tourneys. But, like ive said many times before, when it comes to videogames/anime, im in the minority.

I agree, I used to play as Roy, but Marth is a little faster and has longer reach. Roy does damage at the base of his sword, whereas marth does it at the tip.

My best advice for fighting any of these guys is MASTER the COUNTERATTACK (down+B)! I have a friend who is a frikkin' master with Shiek, and many times Ive been saved using that move. Also learn to hold attacks for more power. Juggling is also easier to do with marth, and can really piss off your opponents, forcing them to make a mistake.

Next thing to do is learn to dodge the range attacks from Falco, Samus, Shiek/Zelda, and Mario/Luigi. Their LR attack can really mess you up. (not fox, because his doesn't stop your character from performing actions.

Ill think of stuff later, Im gonna play it now

Yes, I have been using Marth since the game came out, and I am RARELY beaten. The trick is, in addition to all of the above, the Wavedash.

Wavedashing wins tournaments. Simple as that. If you can master it, you'll be fine.
To Wavedash, jump into the air and IMMEDIATELY dodge (R+direction) diagonally into the ground before the jump animation even begins. If done correctly, you should not jump at all; rather, you should appear to slide while standing in the standing position. The Wavedash can slide you all the way across a stage, AND can be coupled with a Smash attack to perform a Wavesmash, which can easily finish an opponent off, often far before the battle normally would end.

It is EXTREMELY difficult to master, but at least give it a try. If you simply can't or don't want to, just get REALLY good at timing the Counter move. It also wins tournaments, especially if used when an opponent tries to jump back on the stage with a meteor smash. It's quite enjoyable, really.

Also, due to the fact that it is a tourny, it is important to remember that some tactics aren't allowed. Most tournaments won't allow dirty fighting. Dirty fighting includes things like camping (standing on the edge and continuing to knock the opponent who is trying to jump back on further and further away), and, mostly, items. There are alot fo things you shouldn't do, but mostly they are common sense and "honor" issues.

Good luck...if the gamers at your school are serious, you'll need it.

If you're doing good with roy as stated before switch to marth
the quickness comes n handy
marth is so fast that i actually wait for them to strike first so that i can get in a quick smack followed by marth's string attack (can't remember the name of it)
then as stated before when foes are moving in use wavedash
Marth is second only to link, who has gained some slight speed and jump since the origonal SSB,
so if you have the time take a little spin with link and see how well you fare
then make your decision before the tournament to play as marth or link

but if you don't have some time just use marth, his speed and elegance will waste nearly everybody, the rest is up to your timing

Well, I use Ganon and Dr. Mario alot, so I may provide a bit of help.

Never be under Ganon, his down air A is incredible. I've killed alot of people with that. You're best bet to be honest is abuse counterattack (down-b?) Roy's hurts. Don't try and take Ganon in the air. He's got a few tricks, and Roy/Marth haven't got much. Counter alot I guess. (I tend to eschew Marth/Roy, except for occasional Disco Knight action.) Remember, Ganon's got a lot of charging attacks, so be quick with the evasive stuff.

Mario's well balanced. He's stubborn too, he can wall jump, so try and knock him off the sides or up in the air. His fireballs are just annoying, not terribly dangerous, but damage does add up. It may not be a good idea to get above him, I've juggled people a bit with Dr. Mario, and Dr. and normal Mario aren't terribly different. Don't get hit with his side smash, that fireball on his hand packs a wallop and is effienct.

Obvious stuff, master defense. Slides, shields, wavedashing if you can do it. Counter alot. Get a good rhythm in your head. Just when he thinks you he's got you figured out, go abstract on him. Relax. Have fun and the rest of that stuff we all know. Oh yeah, pray to whatever diety you believe in. Good fortune/luck can go a long way.

But seriously, give Marth a try. (If you choose Marth's white outfit...you can be the Disco Knight!)

I don't have any tips, but I also have a question on ways to be very well with Ness and Zelda/Shiek. I'm considering getting a Gamecube, so it helps to now ahead. These two are the characters I do best with. Also, what characters have similar fighting styles to those two?

I wish my school have vgame tourneys. We do have an anime club, because many 10-12 graders like anime, but nothing with videogames.

Roy is for multiplayer battles and Marth is for one on one.

For Ganon out pace and juggle him. Move around, trading blows in one place works better for him and never jump in his range. Good players will pounce on that. He's slow and big and vunerable to projectiles so pick up what ever items you can.

Against Fox and Falco you lose your speed advantage as you know but atleast they can't deflect your smash attack. Stay in the air as Fox and Falco best operate on the ground. You'll be hard pressed to find a Master Fox and Falco player, but if you do start praying.

Link and Mario are pretty well balanced characters so used your speed and time fire attacks carefully and don't charge smash attack often, arrows and fireballs are a pain. You shouldn't be having trouble against either of them.

Samus Anyone who plays Samus will try and out shoot you so learning dodge and anticipate projectiles is always handy in close combat you have the edge over Samus, don't let her get away from you.

Zelda/Sheik Watch out, smart players will be Sheik for the majority of the time(this is why you learn to counter any chance you get) and will only be Zelda when they are trying to KO you. Zelda is as light as a feather and has barely any mobility. If Sheik can't KO you expect a switch to Zelda And try to instant KO I often do this as Zelda is vunerable.

I hope that helps and changing to Marth is a choice you'll be happy to make.

a few more tips:

For whats been said about Ganon, obviously apply to C. Falcon.

I've fought a fox master (one of my close friends), and he is extremely good. If you go up against one, good luck and counter or time your downward attack just right (marth's range comes in handy)

As far as being under ANYONE, remember the counter

probably one of the most annoying characters ive fought against is Kirby. I know someone who is a cheap b****** with kirby. He stands near the edge, sucks you in, and walks off. He can recover while you die a shameful death. The only way to beat this when he is falling is to not struggle. then you both die and you will have a better chance of winning.

also, if you choose outfit colors, choose black marth outfit in dark areas (final destination, etc.) and white outfit in light areas (Corneria, etc).

I have Roy's moves down well, but i tried using marth a bit, but just can't get to liking his moves as much, i prefer Roy becuae his B moves are good, when i played the guy who uses Ganondorf, i managed to counter his moves well, and i do well with countering, lol i beat him by countering his Warlock Punch and he went flying. overall thx for the tips, and more are appreciated.

Somehow I forgot to mention the most fundamental tactic used by ALL expert smashers: wavedashing (thanks Shin). I could wavedash, but I'd never really mastered it like the true pros did (good luck playing #3 in the nation Isaiah or even #8 DarkRain (I took two out of four stock off of this kid, and one was pure luck). Those guys don't effing move to move. They get EVERYWHERE they want to go by wavedashing). Obviously if you master wavedashing and mini-hopping, you can take on anyone. But that's pretty much impossible.

EDIT: Learn to shield grab (a bit complicated, consult Google). That was another thing I hadn't mastered by tournament time, and I was hurt sorely by it.

speaking of fox and falco masters
i just faced off against some friends fox wasn'rt much trouble but falco is for marth
i lost two rounds to him, then i switched to link and dominated
so for good practice with marth face off against 3 falco lvl 9 cpu's and see how you fare and make sure they are all on the same team (this forces you to time everything perfectly) making it really good practice
after getting somewhat good at this you should then do a couple free for all, to keep your sense of not taking on everyone at once then just alternate between the 2 and change the characters you face against

and good luck with the tournament

Edit
as a solid link player i'd say i'm weakest when i have to close the gap (all distance attacks were doged) link is someone who likes to come from below or above with a pretty good regular attack, so force link onto an equal plain and hit him before he hits you, make sure you are not above him to avoid the spin attack, and up attack when below if you dodge his spire technique you're good, but if he doest the air spin hope you are to the right as it swings around from the left. Main points use marth's speed and counterattack, and stay on the same level.

Edit

as for roy same deal except for the speed part. stay on an equal plain and time your B attacks well

Okay be careful there are some people (like myself) who are very good at overcoming marth/roy's counter attack so make sure you have it down.

Mario should be easy enough for marth/roy so don't worry too much.

For link i whould try running attacks or grabs.

Ganondorf is a snale to you so your speed will be enough for him.

fox and falco players seem to use them on the ground only so they're pretty easy to perdict(spelling)still watch out for there weird speed move It harder to counter than most moves.

Samus can be a real thret if she gets you off the platform you're screwed, so avoid getting knocked off. And also she can come back from being hit off the screen.

Zelda/sheik for me was always easy. Still sheik has great speed and good smahs attacks but when she transforms she's vulnerable and thats the best time to attack.

And remember when you attack with your down stab try and use it twick for more damage. Train hard and good luck!

I don't like Roy much, but here are some basic good strats:

-stay in motion, and dodge frequently. I don't know about Roy, but with the characters I use, playing mind games is incredibly effective (dash dancing, wavedashing, L-cancel are all good, but mixing up your moves and strategies works well).

-don't fall off the edge. Ganon, Falco, and Falcon can spike you all day, any day if you're off, and Marth and Samus can edgeguard really well. Get them off and edge-guard.

-chain grab whenever you can. Watch some videos of Ken playing as Marth....he can chain grab and get like 40% damage and then smash toward and A and then guard them. Great strat.

-don't become predictable and fall into certain combos and trends. Mix it up a LOT.

Those always work well. I use Mr. Game and Watch, Bowser, and Ganondorf (although increasingly less Ganon), and I have become so random and nasty with them, it's ridiculous. It's not uncommon for me to better an experienced Fox player with G&W, losing no more than two lives to their five. How? Well, G&W has a random and unpredictable moveset, can dash dance incredibly fast, and can wavedash effectively, not to mention I can combo you while in the air off the side of the stage, and still recover. Also, the game isn't all about just button mashing. I might hit my opponant 5 or 6 times per life, but they are well-thought-out, strategic hits, incstead of mashing and doing 150% damage and then just mashing until they fly off the stage. That will get you killed. Take some time to think about how you can land a fatal attack when they have 50% damage.

I literally looked online at the tiers and chose someone in the bottom tier to get amazing with. Since I hate Pichu, I chose Bowser. I knew this was almost suicidal because he is so slow and easy to combo, but he is surprisingly good. How? Well, I use his strengths to my advantage. I use his slow speed to throw off anybody I play with; since they are playing at such a fast pace, I can deliberately slow my attacks so they still connect after they're done dodging (or counterattack...be wary of this fact and use counter very sparingly). Bowser can rack up damage very fast. I'm talking like 40% in two hits. And once they get to the breaking point, 40% or more, I let them hit me or throw me (depending on my %, of course). Bowser won't move, and they're vulnerable for a fatal attack (which is literally any attack Bowser has when they're at 40%....with some characters with toward+b backward throw will instantly kill at 30%, leaving only puffs of smoke in the victim's wake). I have been known to kill an enemy with 0% in a single combo: if you hit just right with his up and B, it can do 30+ damage to the enemy, and then if you grab them mid-air with toward+B and throw backwards, you can kill most enemies.

The moral of that story is, use your character's strengths and weaknesses to your advantage. Roy has excellent reach, so keep at a reasonable distance, or go in for a grab when they aren't suspecting it. He also has very, very little recovery capabilities, so don't fall off the edge. Just play with him a lot (against HUMANS, not comp...with comp you tend to fal into cheap trends and such that will never work on humans), and just notice what works and what doesn't, and why the things that don't work don't work, and how you can fix it.

Dangit now i wish SSBM had online capabilities so I could fight against some of you, it all sounds like fun.

If you don't like marth, try switching between the two back and forth. Learn both to confuse your friends and befuddle your enemies.

i mainly play as samus so here are a few tips to fight against samus.
if your opponent has a glowing hand fight carefully because at any moment with the push of a button he can send a fully charged blast to really screw you up so work on your deflect timing.make sure to use dodge alot and do not be afraid of the bombs samus can lay for they are not that strong.other then that i would suggest fighting 2 level nine characters in a team match against you.

Actually, building off this, what you could for practice also is to play a 10life free-for all deathmatch. If you like to use a person who uses a sword, play the 10life with youself and the 3 other sword-wielding characters (i.e. if you play as marth, fight against lvl9 Roy, Link, and Young Link.)

To up the ante a lot, play 3on1. At first you might die a lot (happened to me), but eventually you will rock.

There's also Challenge #51. Took me several hours to beat it once.
