The guy in that is a thief.
The girl asking never lets anyone get close to her emotionally because of who she is. And she has a bit of magic abilities, but not as much as the elves. She also is a thief-catcher, who does the exact thing he has devoted his life to rebelling against, I guess.

Does anyone else see this connection?
Anyone know if it's on purpose?
Has anyone seen something odd like this before?

Or maybe I'm just crazy, but I swear that's almost word for word North Figaro scene. heart.gif

It's one of three things. A reference, a coincidence, or a parody. It's quite probably deliberate though.

Even offical works are littered with references, usually as jokes. For example, in Ultimate Force, the episode in Zimbabwe in the third series is clrealy inspired by "Tears of the sun", comedy shows like the Simpsons and Family Guy wind up littered with references to other works, and FF6 itself naturally has references to Star Wars.

MGS2 also has the Big Shell section of the game, which is a semi-reference to the 1996 movie "The Rock". Harry Gregson-Williams was involved in scoring music for both MGS2 and the movie (with Nick Glennie-Smith and Hans Zimmer for The Rock)

I think the author made it because it tied into his/her story and remembered it from FFVI

You mean South Figaro.

But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it is a deliberate reference to that other scene in FFVI. Given the somewhat anime-ish style of this person's drawings, I wouldn't be surprised at all if she had played FFVI.

Then again, that scene references to Star Wars, if I'm not mistaken, so it might just come from there. (Or maybe it's another scene close to this one's parallel in FFVI that references to Star Wars.)

Actually, that discussion between Locke and Celes takes place quite some time after, in the dressing room of the Opera house.

I personally think it's a coincidence. The "happy-go-lucky figure with a tragic past who has subsequent soft spot for ladies in trouble" was a cliche before FFVI was even a gleam in Sakaguchi's eye. This lady doesn't even seem as cold as Celes -- more a Terra, really. And he protected Terra for the same reason.

Although it is odd how similar the dialogue is. huh.gif

Celes: Locke. Why did you help me escape back there?
Locke: I...once abandoned someone when she needed me...
Celes: Somewhere inside you were saving...her, weren't you...?

EDIT: And this was in South Figaro.

I've never noticed a scene like that in any of the Star Wars movies. The only dialogue between Locke and Celes that references Star Wars (in South Figaro, for that matter) is when Locke comes to free her from imprisonment, but only if you opt to leave him in the soldier outfit.

I haven't read the whole thing, but I think, based on that page as well as a few others, that it probably is a mere coincidence.

That is weird. I don't think he/she did it on purpose. They probably played the game a long time ago, and subconsciously put the freakishly-similar dialogue in. I don't think it is a coincidence. The characters even look like Locke and Celes.

Oh, in that case, it's a combination of the two.

But the male character there is still a thief! I'd still believe that it's more than just a coincidence; it's an intentional allusion.

Also, SilverFork: thanks for the info; I haven't seen any SW movie except for Episode III.
