BBC:

There has been a small outbreak of “zombism” in a small town near the border of Laos in North-Eastern Cambodia.

The culprit was discovered to be mosquitoes native to that region carrying a new strain of Malaria which thus far has a 100 percent mortality rate and kills victims in fewer than 2 days.

After death, this parasite is able to restart the heart of its victim for up to two hours after the initial demise of the person where the individual behaves in extremely violent ways from what is believed to be a combination of brain damage and a chemical released into blood during “resurrection.”

Cambodian officials say that the outbreak has been contained and the public has no need to worry.

General Ary Serey had this to say, "We have obtained samples of this new parasite and plan to learn how it starts the heart and other major organs of the deceased. We intend to use this to increase the quality of life for all."

US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice opposed the plan saying that the Cambodian government holds a great biological weapon and should destroy it immediately. Cambodian officials have yet to comment.

A United Nations team will be dispatched to Cambodia to confirm the safety of biological research in Cambodia.

Wow, just wow. That is so messed up, so dangerous, and is like another Sci Fi movie come to life. What are the ramifications of this? I'd really like to hear what comes out of this.

And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard

To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone

Real life friggin' zombies? Too cool.
I'm buying a rocket launcher and stalking it in my basement, just incase I open my door one day and come face to face with an army of undead. Too awesome.
Hopefully though, we can learn something useful from these bugs and this malaria strain to cure diseases or something productive. Or at the very least; start breeding and training the undead.

ZOMBIES! F*** YEAH!

This calls for a new Resident Evil game.

I can see it now: Resident Evil: CAMBODIA.

That is truly awesome. Zombies are real. BEWARE!

That's cool in so many different ways. On the one hand perhaps this could lead to a serious medical breakthrough.

On the other hand, Zombies.................brain....good

Not so cool for the victims and families though...

Still, this can be either very good or very bad later on. Medically there are probably going to be astounding breakthroughs. On the other hand we likely all know how Resident Evil goes...

I'm finding it harder and harder to pass off the theory that we're bearing witness to the End of Days.

This doesn't help.

If it's the new strain of Malaria to blame, just don't hang out any rain forests. Or, y'know, any place where it's been known to commonly spread.

Till now, the only case of zombism (sorta) I'd heard of (ie, body's alive although the subject is dead) was when scientists where draining blood from test animals and then, hours later, retransfusing it back into 'em, thereby resurrecting the animals who mostly seemed unfazed after being dead for a long while. And I thought that was weird...

Oh, sure, that's what they say in the movies, too.

I don't like how they want to play with it and try to use it for good.

Let's hope for a Zombies Ate My Cambodian Neighbors movie. ^__^

Though, on a serious note, it must be a hard choice of whether to destroy the strain completely or keep some just so it's not completely gone.

Well; it's better that they claim to be using it for good than flat out saying, "Listen, we're going to turn this into the most fearsome biochemical weapon the planet has ever seen and in about five year's time, we'll have a super-human undead army ready to kick down your door, so start praying now."

Though I agree, it doesn't really sound too legit. I'm comfortable knowing they have a short lifespan of one to two hours; I know I can run away/hide/shoot at something for that long.

I guess time can only tell where this will go.

I'm forseeing a castle bathed in moonlight, surronded by forest and fog; bats filling the air and the shrill cries of wolves in the night.

Quick; someone call the Belmonts, this Cambodian virus is really going to screw us up.

And here we were worried about terrorists.
THE UNDEAD ARE COMING.

Well, see, when someone mentioned the whole "freezing your body by the bloodstream" idea, I said "Is this what Dracula's Castlevania Corp. is investing in these days?"

Looks like Drac's got more stuff going on. And I thought there wasn't supposed to be any action until 2035. Oh well, looks like Konami was a few years early on the J-man's adventure. Someone better call J-man fast.

Seriously, though, I am somewhat doubting of the information. Note that the site isn't directly bbc.co.uk , even though it has all the right links. I tried a cursory search on the BBC website, and couldn't dig it up. A Google Search produces a bunch of pages about this, but none of the first ten of 464 results is a BBC page (which I'd expect to be top if this were truly breaking news). Additionally, there seems to be a "mirror" of some sort at http://login.tvi.edu/~rmontoya42/4483241.stm.htm , which makes me wonder as to whether someone simply elaborately faked a BBC page (hey, it's possible, and phishers regularly fake eBay/Amazon/PayPal and bank chains' websites).

Okay, I've got some really hoffific information about this so if you're a bit squeamish don't read on...

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
The horrifying news: Its not fake.

The good news: Last Updated: Friday, 1 April, 2005, 17:00 GMT 18:00 UK . IIRC it was an april fools prank by the beeb that they have deleted, hence why it's all mirrors...

I was gonna make something up about how one SAS trooper killed nearly eighty zombies then discovered he was merely in a pub, but meh...

[pointless bracket to make it look a little more like there's some real information here and frighten anyone not reading the spoiler

Truly worrying.

You have every reason to be skeptical, but I've noticed in the past that some BBC news stories aren't present on the site, but do link to it. But then, they've always had the site they redirected to in the URL.

Now for why you should be skeptical, or just not believe it, is 'cause this is (or was) an April Fools' joke. A quick check at the always-useful Snopes confirms it's been cycling across the Internet since April and is just an edit of a real BBC news page.

Edit
And Del beat me to it...

The URL in question is http://65.127.124.62/south_asia/4483241.stm.htm

Notice that 65.127.124.62 does not say bbc.co.uk

If you do an IP resolve on 65.127.124.62 it says it is the ip of baserape.com.

Just an April Fool's Prank!? AAH dont scare me like that I thought we were on the verge of a Zombie Apocalypse!

Seriously, what would you do in a zombie apocalypse? I don't know If our town would be safe (It's a redneck town all right, and they can talk the talk, but can they walk the walk?)

One performance night, back when I was doing the Improv show (see Theatre Life post), I was talking to another cast member about a Zombie Apocalypse. He believed that after a while, guns were useless because you'd run out of ammo eventually, so go in there with a sword and die like a legend.
My view was: waste all the ammo you can on headshots, learn to use a Shotgun (dead useful in crowds), and by all means carry a sword, spear, or other sharp melee object, and die like a legend. Now THATS how I would want to die, and I'll be damned if I live in a post-apocalyptic zombie world.

Yeah.

See, the heart controls ALL major bodily functions, mainly mobility and coordination, as well as the identification of terrain and object to allow proper navigation. Having this organ restart would allow the body to function in a somewhat "animal" like manner, as the brain's only function (as we all know!) is to store memory. That's right folks: all that jibjab you've been spoon-fed about how the cerebelum controls coordinations and movement (yay for purkinj cells) was a hoax. The heart does it. wink.gif

It should be mentionned that the article fails to mention that 38 states have already voted laws preventing the use of these zombies to dominate the world and that attempts to do so will be handled by a lone trucker with no combat experience whose girlfriend has recently dumped and whose appartment door now has an eviction notice stapled to it. This individual will singlehandedly handle the situation.

If there's one thing zombie movies have thought me, it's the above. And by god, none of that "logic" mishmash can contradict this!

Edit: Typo. Typos are the first symptomes of zombism... :_:

Nah, they should simply have used that old Wallachian law sensibility and ordered whoever possesses an alchemically-enhanced undead-killing rumor-killing whip and a clear mind to deal with the problem.
