Just curious to see how many of you out there actually use weapons like Axes, Flails, or Bags considering the annoying fact that you occasionally do almost no damage.

I sometimes use the bags just for the stats or the flails for Agrias (turn her into a ninja w/equip sword and watch her speed and damage go up).

Reis gets a bag, usually an H bag. Other than that, I never use any of those weapons. The Scorpion Tail has some potential with its wicked PA, and I've been tempted to try out using a PA-boosted Ninja with one of those to see how it turns out, but I've never really gotten around to it.

When you do the math for hammer damage (WP*[1...PA]), the Scorpion Tail averages out to 23*½*PA = 11½*PA. Compared to the Spell Edge's 13*((PA+Speed)/2) or the Rune Blade's 14*PA, you're really better off with more mundane weapons. You'll get the odd 23*PA blow, but not when you need it; the odd 23*1 blow, when you need the big one; and an average blow that isn't better than what you get with stuff you buy from vendors.

That said, I usually keep a stock of ~99 Morning Stars -- as throwing weapons. Their damage when thrown isn't random, they've got the highest PA of any purchased weapon (16), and at 9k apiece really aren't that expensive. biggrin.gif

As weird as I am, I LOVE random damage. Am I alone? I think it's awesome to do a damage of 12 and (real-life situation) an enemy considers that character a pushover, then BOOM!, next attack is a number of times greater. Ha! Fooled ya'!! In actuality, I think random damage, though unreliable, is fun and, on lucky occasions, for me, useful. Rad or Mages I equip with Axes, Hammers/Flails, and Bags regularly/occasionally.

Myself, I generally use them early-game: Particularly around Golgorand, I have a tendency to wind up with a ninja I'll toss some flails for use. And, of course, up until post-Queklain, I almost worship Repeating Fist.

Axes, I never touch. Since I have a pathological tendency to turn Agrias into a thief, I usually bag her, but...I don't know. I just never liked those Axes. Mainly because the only class I used that also used axes was Geomancers, and I'd hit them with a Sleep Sword ASAP and keep that, and before that, use elemental and give them no sword at all if I can spend gil better elsewhere.

If I recall correctly, you can use the really strong bags or flails or what-have-you for Jumping for non-randomized damage.

But personally I'd rather stick to the non-randoms, Squire's can use Draw Out with a little more success with a Rune Blade. Ninja's Spell Edge get's Don't Act. Both of these are better then the chance of slightly higher damage.

But Axes and Flails are awesome! Bags are hilarious!

...Personally, if you're going to cross-class drawout, I'd pick something other then squire myself >_>

And, well. I'll agree late-game, random damage is highly outclassed. I'll still stand by my statement that early on, where the increased WP can be a big plus (Especially Repeating fist!) randomized damage weapons are worth using.

While true, they aren't more powerful than other weapons of similar rarity. For purchaseables, the Morning Star (16) just beats out a Rune Blade (14) or Kikuichimoji (15) but is inferior to an Oberisk (12*(3/2)=18). For poachables, the Dragon Whisker (17*(3/2)=25.5, truncated to 25) is better for jumping than the Scorpion Tail (23).

That's why the random-damage weapons aren't more popular. It's not just that they're random, they're also nothing special even at max damage.

Double entendres aside, I think most people who equip bags do so for the effects more than the damage. That's the only way to get speed+1 from the weapon slot (or regen, aside from the Chaos Blade).

Again with the double entendres. I love this thread. biggrin.gif

Unfortunately, bags are classified as "1 hand only" -- no Two Hands, no Two Swords.
