Hello FFT Fans,
Ever since I got a PSP I have been waiting for a good strategy RPG. Acutally, I've been waiting for ANY good RPG for the system. However, all development efforts so far for the PSP seem to cater to popular trends and the lowest common denominator of gaming. It hit me one day how much I would love to have my all-time favorite console game ported to the PSP. I am obviously talking about Final Fantasy Tactics. The Gameboy Advance enjoyed great fiscal success in porting old favorite titles to the portable platform. Games such as Super Mario World, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Final Fantasy I and II were well received by players who had the original systems on which the games appeared as well as gamers who were getting a fresh look at these titles. I am hoping that the PSP will follow suit and be host to ports of old games. I certainly would love to put FFT in my pocket and take my addiction with me. I am posting to see who might agree with this notion and to ask for ideas from all of you on how I might go about respectfully petitioning Square / Enix to release this great title on the capable PSP. I have tried other portable strategy RPG's on the Gameboy Advance, but nothing quite captures the complete package that was Final Fantasy Tactics. FFT Advance was a disappointing "sequel" given its childish story, proposition based progression, and item-bound skill development (this was fine for FFIX, but not a FFT title in my opinion.) Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis was similar to FFT with its more adult themed story and class progression, but its depth of class abilities was shallow compared with FFT. I want a great, portable strategy RPG. The system and the game exist. How do I get them together? -- Lagaidh -------------------- I Bork. Foo Pah I am. |

It sounds like a cool idea, but I have no opinion either way since I don't have a PSP.

First of all, online petitions don't do jack squat. A PSP port of Tactics is not out of the question, but don't get your hopes up, even if you manage to get 10,000+ signatures. If something that has had a dedicated petition actually happens, then it isn't the petition's doing. Ever.
And secondly, I know that Nippon Ichi was originally planning to release two SRPGs for the PSP, one from the Disgaea/La Pucelle/Makai Kingdom series and one from the Japan-only Generation of Chaos series. I haven't been religiously following the status of those two games, but I think that NIS America is planning on releasing both of them in the US next year. If you're desperate for a good SRPG for the PSP, those two games are probably your best bets as of now. Edit I just checked IGN, and it apears that Makai Wars (the Disgaea offshoot SRPG for the PSP) was cancelled earlier this year. Generation of Chaos is still slated for next year, so yeah, look that one up. Edit Whoops, sorry if I sounded harsh, but I seemed to think that somewhere in your fairly well-spoken post that there was an advert for an online petition. My mistake. Umm it's a cool Idea too but since I don't have a psp like I have the money to be changing batteries that much. I don't really care I'm waiting till they just make another FF Tactics personally I think I'll play Suikoden Tactics to see how good it is.

I would love to see a port of tactics to the PSP (though not nearly as much as I would like to see some sort of Tactics 2--whether or not this FFT2 were a sequel or not). Unfortunately, I wouldn't get my hopes up on either point

Heh. Okay.
laszlow: No, I am not naive enough to think that any online movement would move any company to take any action. I just thought I would pitch the idea to see if anyone had any useful suggestions. About the Disgaea franchise, personally, the games irritate me. If it isn't a mechanic that is completely arbitrary, like a controllable energy flow around the battle field, it's the japanese flavor of story and/or characters that are geared towards 14 year olds (one of my gripes about the GBA FFT title). I wish I did like those games. It seems there's something great at the core. The smaller details sour it for me. I am picky, especially about what I would spend 40-100 hours playing through. I did, however, play my copy of FFT all day today. It's a nice thing when you are sick with a cold. Having a party of thieves ready before the 6th story battle and stealing everything from everyone has a sort of devious satisfaction to it. The Goddess Terra: There are no normal batteries to change for the PSP ![]() Kane: I agree. I'd more look forward to a sequel than a port. I thought a port would be more likely because it would cost less to produce and they could charge the same amount for the disk. FFT would be a brand new game to a great majority of current gamers. Thanks for the replies. -Lagaidh -------------------- I Bork. Foo Pah I am. |

well, ya know, I'm just pissed that FF3j is going to NinDS. I feel completely gipped, cause it's impractical for me to run out and buy a DS just for that game. And a GBA for that matter. Extras? Aaaaargh!
but yes, a new Tactics for PSP would be splendid! -------------------- Quote Do you think we're forever? |

I would love to see FFT on the PSP, but I feel that (1) new things would be added that would make me as an FFT fan turned off, personally (2) no amount of pleading would make a port/sequel come to fruition, as it isn't the most lucrative game to base any series on (3) I really don't want to see a port in the first place, despite that going against my wildest fantasies. If it's just going to be remade for a new system to get some spare change, I'd rather be spared from seeing it depreciate from its original, insurmountable self.
I know my feelings don't cover everyone's, but I just can't wrap my mind around the idea of the original being transferred to a new system without any changes that would put me off. Selfish in a way, yes; my little faith in Squeenix' business dealings in the "now", yes. FFT is a Playstation game, with relatively poor graphics compared to the multi-dimensional, wondrous games that are now being put on the PSP. No one knows the awesome story beforehand--it's not something you can tell from the box art or, maybe, even on your first playthrough. I think that it wouldn't do that well as competition either, as it is sort of rarified ("gem" status) to many people. The FF name could help, but...I wouldn't put my life savings behind it. Eh...yeah. That's my stance. =/ This post has been edited by Shotgunnova on 2nd November 2005 19:38 -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

Actually, it sounds like a cool idea to me. Maybe it'll bring Squenix back on it's feet, since most of it's fans seem to be dissappointed with it's recent decisions. But I'd really rather see them make a sequel to FFT... an actual sequel, not a offquel. (Suddenly gets the ambitious idea to write an FFT sequel and send it to Square....)

If a remake was going to be made, it'd be on the DS.
Squenix looks to Nintendo for handheld FFs, and Sony for console (hence why FFIV is on GBA, not PSP). This is without mentioning that the DS has an ideal interface for a SRPG, as Advance Wars Dual Strike clearly shows. That said, I believe that a new FFT game (or remake) is already planned...just not for the handheld many of you hoped for. When it comes down to it, owning both a DS and PSP is a smart idea. The PSP is great for action, adventure, and sports games, while the DS specializes in SRPGs, FPSs, and puzzlers (though Lumines was great on PSP). I personally am saving up for a PSP so that I can get the best of both worlds, though the DS categories interest me more... All in all, I can't wait to see what Squenix churns out. Part of me wants a sequel, part of me wants a remake. Honestly though, that remake sounds REALLY good... -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |
