I don't know either, but I was wondering why in the pirate cave some guy says that she only said "Ferifa" when she was found, and that's why they called her Faris. I don't think its a bad translation...

In the emulated version I played her name was Sarisa, which I thought sounded better than Faris; she didn't have a friggin' pirate accent either, which definitely got tiresome after awhile. Also, Reina's called Lenna in the online translation, which I sort of prefer.

If someone can get untranslated emulator screen shots with the names of all of these characters, there are several people on this board (myself included) who could tell you what the exact kana read and how valid some of the transliterations of the names are.

I looked for some of this stuff with google, but I couldn't find most of the names. The only one I found in the original Japanese was Reina, which is written re-na, and is probably better translated as Lena (since 'Reina' has a diphthong and would be written re-i-na in katakana).

I like it. "Reina" is Spanish for "Queen," and Salsa sounded pretty Spanish, too XD

Plus, it's kind of like how Faris is kind of "spicy," I guess. ^.^

with japanese it's easy to confuse "R" and "L"
so it could've very well been origonally Sarisa, or salsa for all we know

and as for who would name there kid salsa it's not that weird, at least compared to what some of hollywood's stars and starlets have named their kids

some poor kid is actuall named after a swedish tank

and also in seinfeld George Castanza is willing to name one of his kids "Soda"
because it is a crisp refreshing drink laugh.gif

so it doesn't really matter if her name really is salsa, it's never bothered me, and everybody calls her faris

I simply call her Faris. As for her 'actual' name, I prefer Sarisa; makes more sense. (But keep in mind her dad is named 'Tycoon', for no real reason either.)

Square-Enix definitely butchered both the translation and the music porting of FFV going from Super Famicom (SNES) to PlayStation.

He was also willing to name his son "Seven" (which I would never do, but strangely I like the name)

Anyways, I've never heard anything of this "Salsa", but being that poor translation is a common occurrence, I suppose I'm not surprised

I do like the "Faris" and "Lenna" translation better than "Salsa" and "Reina". It would seem that Reina would go along better with the character's background given that she's a princess, but if you want it to be more accurate to the actual Japanese, Lenna it is. (Although, one could argue it should be Lena instead of Lenna since they do in fact have Ns in their characters).

BTW, the word Salsa simply means sauce in Spanish (ie salsa picante = hot sauce).

Salsa's quite a sexy name for a sexy chick like her.. She's MY salsa >_> dry.gif nobody gets her but me!!! *continues dipping*

J/k. Seriously, Salsa sounds horrid for a real name.. Sarisa sounds better..

Hey, I think I know why Sarisa called herself "Ferifa". I think after she was brain damaged, she could remember only half of her name.. Just think: Farisa!

I always thought that 'Faris' resulted from a young Sarisa having a really bad lisp (and pronouncing it 'Farifa'). Not that the pirates really cared how it was pronounced, but you know.

I like the name Salsa. Not that I would name my future daughter that or anything. Salsa dancers are cool, salsas yummy, and Ferifa looks kind of like a salsa dancer when shes a Dancer.... ohmy.gif

When I played my badly emulated + translated version of FFV, Gaulf's daughter's name was kururu?? I also didn't have a choice in naming her. What the hell is a kururu, is that the same thing as Setzer's rabit saying Mugu Mugu when his slot gives you lagomorph? Confuzzled...

By the way, what's a confuzzled? Is it like playing a puzzle game? No. I'm kidding. =P

"Kururu" also appears as battle dialog when one of those frog/mage thingies does something--either cast Toad on your entire party or summon something else, I think.

I think "Kururu" as a name for Cara arose because her Japanese name is like "Kuraru" or something like that. Hence, "Cara", "Kururu", and "Krile" (think of the last one as "kaREELa").

Too bad Gaulf had to die, cause his name was consistent.

I had to stay awake to play FFV, it wasn't a good experience playing that game as it didn't strike me as a good game (even though I've overbeated FF1-8, I only beat FF5 once, and it will stay that way).
