Wow, all sorts of new topics and posts, and I haven't been able to read a single one for a week.

Sometime last week (can't remember admist all my frustrations) my internet stopped. Don't know why, and I tried every trick in the book from cleaning out the dust (there was enough to kill a man in that tower) to shutting down the firewall, used a friends ethernet chord... nope. Instead I had to go buy a new ethernet card. As its at a friends house, I haven't installed it yet but theoretically i should be able to post again soon by tomorrow afternoon! thumbup.gif

If that doesn't work, any suggestions to my internet troubles?

I'm assuming you have some type of broadband based on the fact that you said you use an ethernet cable and that you use Windows XP.

Are you connected through a router? Directly to the modem? Is the modem plugged in? Does the light in the back adjacent to the ethernet port you're plugging in to light up when you plug in? Is your ethernet card turned off in Device Manager?

I've never had this happen to me, but I've had instances where, for some reason, some component of the computer apparently spontaneously stops working. (This has happened with my "Wireless Zero Configuration", but considering that Zero was made by Dr. Wily, it's not too much of a surprise). You might want to make sure all your internet-connecting devices/drivers/thingies/whatnots/whatchamacallits are connected firmly and turned on if necessary.

First the questions:

Yes, the router connects to the modem, it is plugged in, the lights are on, ethernet card is turned on.

Yes, many times, no effect.

An update:
It just so happens recently I went to a LAN party with my cpu. Its not the router, it was my (integreated) ethernet card (or so i thought, keep reading). This was proven with a brand new Ethernet chord, so its not the chord thats the problem. So I bought a new Ethernet card. I installed it and tried it, and guess what?!
still no internet.
Now i want to play COD2 online and join my friends squad, but cant. Yes its installed and turned on. The lights still blink. My mom and I came to the conclusion that it was my cpu, so we called a technician, who can't do anything until the 27th.
So until then, I'll be posting at school or on this cpu, where I share it with my mom and sisters (even though one already moved out again). Sucks to be me

If you are connected to a router, perhaps you're not being assigned an IP from the router's DHCP server, or it's trying to assign you an IP that is already in use on the network. I've had that happen to me on one of my laptops when I moved it from my network at the office to my network at home.

Check to see if your computer is set up with a static local IP in your Network settings (if it is, try turning that off), and check the administrative panel of your router to see that it sees your PC when it's turned on.

This could very well be the problem, I had a similar thing happen a few weeks back and though it took me a while as to how to configure my router and likewise IP address, it finally fixed it.

Also, numerous times I've had things randomly stop working as GMH said. I'm on wireless internet in my room, but that's not the problem. I'm not sure what is the problem actually, but what I do to fix it is go down to the cable modem, unplug it and plug it back in. And at the same time unplug the router and plug it back in. It's usually one of those, and afterwards you will be assigned a new IP.

And one by one I watched every constellation die
And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard
Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star
I should've known, walked all the way home
To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone
