Alright, I just went in, and finished the rare monster battle at Barinus Hill. A Hydra, and Black Chocobo were the guests against a Hydra, Blue, Red, and Green Dragon, Hydura, Dark, King, and normal Behemuths.

Problem is, after the battle I didn't get to except either into my group. What happened? Do I have to invite them with a Mediator (which I tried to do), or did something go wrong? Neither died as well.

For hard targets like the dragons and hydra classes, Reis' Dragon Tame skill is the best. It automatically invites non-ally monsters of said classes at 100% accuracy. You can use other conventional methods, too, but Reis' skills are shaped for that sort of work. If you want an easy time with it, give Reis the Chantage and have another character put on the Vanish Mantle/Secret Clothes (and never have him/her attack). Instant win if you don't get tripped up by status effects and equipment-breaking.

And only weapon attacks trigger Train, but you have to remember that the attack has to bring the monster into Critical status for it to work at all.

There are only some guest monsters that join you after a battle. Not all of them will.

The only guest monster that joins you after a battle is Boco. The ones you run into during random battles help you out that one battle only. You'll have to train non-guest monsters yourself if you want them to join.

There's also the Byblos monster from END's battle, and Reis in her Holy Dragon form, but that's it. No other monsters can join you though, not even in the Bariaus Hill rare battle, which features a nasty array of Behemoths, Dragons and Hyudras against you and only two guest monsters...

In other words, all non-story battles (that includes sidequests) will never give you the opportunity to easely get a monster on your team after the battle.

Train works for every normal attack/charge/etc. Thus excluding Divine Knight Skills/Holy Knight Skills/Dark Knight Skills/Temple Knight Skills/Magic/Summons/anything else taht isn't related to a normal attack. Get it?

I'd recommand you taming with Train instead of Invite, but If you want a Dragon/Hydras, like Shutgunnova said, Reis saves the day.
