Let's see: I don't think you get to name Locke "Capture", Cyan "Swdtech", Setzer "GP Rain", Relm "Sketch" or "Control". So what did you name Cyan, Relm, and Umaro?

Cyan: It was either SwTech, STech or Sword... something like that
Relm: Sketch (Characters can have up to 6 letter names)
Umaro: I don't remember, but probably Fight
Locke: Steal
Setzer: Slot

I sometimes just randomly pick animals and name then that.... For example, in my current game, Locke is now named 'Frog'....

I always keep my characters names on default. I like the names that Square Soft gives them.

usually in my first game i will leave names alone to scope out personalities. However I rarely rename all of them. I just pick a name to best suit personality.

However I really dislike it when you cant rename all characters (like in ff8)
but one that i didnt like the most was when you could rename frog in Crono Trigger but not his real name, which was of course Glenn.
no offense to anyone who is named Glenn, but all of the people in real life named Glenn that I know so far have been @$$&*!^$, which stinks for it ruined a perfectly usable name for me

Sidenote about the "Glenn" issue: my "first name" in my screen name is actually taken from that particular "Glenn". (Note: not the one from CC!)

It's more like since I keep the names that the game gives me, I tend AFTERWARDS to associate the qualities of the particular character with that name, rather than associate a name with the character beforehand. For example, that's partially why I think the name "Setzer" is so darn cool.

Well, one website that I was looking at for help on how to raise chocobos recommended giving them names based on their type and gender, so they'd be easy to tell apart. So I thought, "That's a fine idea," and here's what my collection looked like:

The Great Male: Grey
The Good Female: Guri
Their first child, a Green Female: Jade
Their second child, a Blue Male: Skye
Jade and Skye's child, a Black Male: Jet
The Wonderful Female: Wind
Jet and Wind's first child, a Gold Female: Aura
Their second child, a Gold Male: Helios

I was so proud of my chocobos. I got way too into that part of the game, for some reason. smile.gif

For every FF game I usually keep the original names except for ff7's red 13 thats just a terrible name I call him Tony or something terrible corny. In ff3 so far I have named Terra TERRA and Locke LOCKE but i do nickname them like Gau is ratboy and Locke is that darn thief and terra the insane one, this is fun to do and it doesnt confuse ur friends when they come over like when you name terra jennifer and locke george that just messes up every single players guide you try to read.

I always leave the original names... why? Because FF3 is a story with the names given to the characters already. Seems silly for me to change a story that's already written ...

Normally, I replace the name of them by thinking of elemental stuff that suits them and translate the name to Portuguese:
Terra-Terra
Locke-Nuvem
Celes-Neve
Gau-Lua
Cyan-Vento
Edgar-Folha
Sabin-Pedra
Relm-Luz
Strago-Gelo
Shadow-Sombra
Mog-Vida
Umaro-Frio
Gogo-Metal(for the "mirror" surface)

First time I played this game I named everyone after people in my sixth-grade class (which I was currently enrolled in rolleyes.gif); however, I don't feel like trying to remember who they were. tongue.gif

Since then, just about every RPG I've played has had its characters renamed to match names of characters of mine who I feel they most resemble either in personality or battle utility. For FF VI:

Terra: Danni (basically, just a strong-willed female with mystical powers; also the last of a dying race)
Locke: Ted (needed a romantic character for Celes/Katt, also a prominent character)
Edgar: Biff
Sabin: Vito (these two worked out rather well, Biff is good with machines, and Vito is a hulk, and they are brothers; however, their personalities are the exact opposite (Vito is my lady-chaser))
Shadow: Niloc (mysterious, quiet loner-type)
Celes: Katt (good with blades, romantic interest for Ted)
Cyan: Jorin (kinda hard, but Jorin is the closest my cast comes to a "heavy armor" guy...too bad Cyan can't shape-shift tongue.gif)
Gau: Always changing. In my current game, he is Truls, after Truls Rohk of Terry Brook's Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series.
Setzer: Van(rushal) (definitely neither a personality nor functionality match, but they are both pale, have long hair, and kick ass cool.gif)
Mog: Tabby (basically just a name theme, as Tabby is an elf...Mog is kinda cat-like...?)
Strago: Darius (old wise guy...yup)
Relm: Snow (both are children)
Umaro: Emew (Tabby's familiar, Mog's flunky, etc)
Gogo: Dhalin (semi-connected; Dhalin's a shape-shifter, Gogo can do things as others do and you can't tell what it looks like...)

I only have one other hero character who wasn't used for this game, but the majority of these usually end up replacing the original names in just about any RPG I can rename characters in. It's like being able to send my characters on different adventures. The names also stay within the game; I always refer to Sabin as Sabin, Locke as Locke, etc.

I have the habit of naming all my characters. I'm going to stop soon though. When I was a kid, I named them after all my friends, and now I realize I dislike some of the people that I named years ago, say if I stopped playing a game a while ago.

I liked Namingway for that reason. tongue.gif

I try to keep their names the same as Square made them. I do get bored sometimes and name them bad words or body parts. I can't help but laugh when someone yells a name...PENIS!?!?

OK, I used name Locke, Edgar, Sabin, and Celes after my oldest brother, my older-than-me brother, me, and my older sister (in that order). Nowadays, I realize that that is just plain weird now, so I have changed to names from my own fiction stories. Or other people in my life. Or ME!

Terra is usually: Terra or Sarah
Locke is usually: Locke, Onell, or Johnny
Edgar is usually: Greg or Edgar
Sabin is usually: Sabin or Mike
Celes is usually: Melisa or Farrus

...and so on and so forth. I usually keep a few like they are, just decapitalizing them. All caps are WEIRD man. tongue.gif

i usually have a hidden meaning for each name i give a character, so here goes on what i name them:
TERRA-Hope
LOCKE-Connor
EDGAR-Henry
SABIN-Hiro (rock on DRAGON BALL!!)
CELES-Dawn
CYAN-Martin...anyone read the "Redwall" books?
GAU-Felix
SETZER-Ace
MOG-Moogle!!!
RELM-Nanami
SHADOW-Shadow, because there is no improving that name
STRAGO-I used to name him gramps, but sometimes merlin is cool.
UMARO-Umaro or Banjo
GOGO-Mimic or Harley

yeah, these names are stupid. but i like them. peace!

I almost always keep the Square names.

One time I recall trying to name every FF6 person after a FF4 person (and vice versa with a FF4 game). It sorta works at first, but it all goes to crap once you have to name Locke Edward even though he isn't a coward and you have to name Setzer Cid even though there already is a Cid, etc.

I've also tried naming a girl character after someone I liked, which also doesn't work out so well when a friend comes over and is like "hey, show me ff3" and I'm scramble to show him another game or something laugh.gif Boy, has anyone ever done that before or is it just me?

It would be a scream though to name every character Kefka or Esper or something like that smile.gif

I just left them thee way they are, but I did it like this once Terra, Locke, Edgar... Instead of TERRA, LOCKE, EDGAR...
Edit
As soon as I find my Emulator disk so I can play FFVI, I am going to play a new game with everyones name spelled Backwards (OGOG= GOGO) OTFL!

CRONO: Goku (To honor Akira Toriyama)

In FFVII...
Cloud : Blader
Barret : Lokkon
Tifa : Jade
Aeris : Either Aerith (True spelling of her name) or Dedchik
RedXIII : Nanaki
Vincent: Alucard
Yuffie : I could never bring myself to change the name of something hotter than the sun's core
FF9...
Zidane : Guile
Vivi : BM (After 8-Bit Theatre..)
Dagger : Daegra
Eiko : Kiddo
Freya : Mouse
Amarant : Ali
Quina : Debu
