I hear a lot about how stealing Elmdor's equipment is a tough thing to do in this game, and there are also some FAQs about completing the game with just Ramza. I went ahead and did a solo Ramza game and when I got to Elmdor I started thinking about whether or not it would be possible to steal all of his equipment with only Ramza. Well, it is, because I just did it. Has anyone else been able to do it? If you have I'd appreciate it if you responded with your setup and how you did it. It was pretty tough and I don't know if it's possible to do with many different setups, since you need so many things for the battle...here's a small description of what I did:

Secondary  - Steal
Reaction   - Auto Potion
Support    - Two Swords
Movement   - Move-HP Up

Right Hand - Excalibur
Left Hand  - Rune Blade
Helmet     - Flash Hat
Armor      - Judo Outfit
Accessory  - 108 Gems

First of all this setup is extremely fast, with 10 speed plus haste. The 108 Gems obviously protects against Blood Suck, the Judo Outfit protects against Dead (most specifically the Death Sentence from Muramasa). I killed Celia and Lede before they could use Stop or anything else on me, and I killed the Ultima Demons so my X-Potions would last longer. Then I just tried to steal from Elmdor every turn and used Scream if I couldn't get to him. I didn't have to worry about my HP because Auto Potion healed most of the damage that Elmdor did, and Move-HP Up cured the rest.

A few persons managed to do it here, I'd be impressed if only me and Mr. Thou were able to do it though.

This is the way I did it:

108 gems (prevents BloodSuck)

Steal
Math Skill (haste, Slow, Holy, Flare, Foxbird)
MP Switch
Magic Attack UP
Move MP UP

Step by Step:
1.Use calculate Holy on the assasins ultil they transform to Ultima Demons.
2.Use calculate Flare on The Ultima Demons to put them into a Critical State.
3.Use calculate Haste on yourself to increase your speed.
4.Use calculate Slow on Elmdor to Decrease his speed.
5.Use calculate Foxbird sucessfully two times on Elmdor to drop his Brave to 10.
6.Steal his shield before anything else to incease chance of stealing. (except if you are always able to steal from the back)
7.Steal the rest of his equipment.

Use step 3-4 as much as needed but not until the Ultima demons are critical.

If you never get Confused you can easely attempt this.

I think I got confused once or never. I can't remember this was a long time ago (about one and a half year). Death protection is fun against Death Sentence since Elmdor will only run away if he managed to inflict it.

If I ever do it again, I'll try to get a battle on mandalia plains and steal a Thief's Hat off an enemy squire. Don't forget that it's 1 more speed some faster CT gain and +1% to steal success rate compared to the Flash Hat!

IIRC, if you equip Magic Defend Up, he won't use murasame unless you lower his PA or his brave. Knowing that, it's not a big deal to steal from him.

well it is not necessarily cheating, and 108 gems/ judo outfit doesn make it a lot easier
in my solo ramza game i was trying to get ultima too
I had pretty much the same set-up as bizen boat except i had 2 excaliburs. The hardest part was waiting for something to cast ultima

I agree that Calculate is not a way cheating, but a great way to victory or defeat if you're not careful! I don't have the guts to attepmt to steal Elmdor's equipment with a solo Ramza 'cause I prefer groups but as long as you have defense against Death and/or Stop and don't fall into getting Charmed, I can definately see how it would be accomplished.

I managed to do it using the same kind of setup as Zodiac.

I didn't use the MP Switch / Move MP UP trick though, because I don't like it at all (despite its obvious awesomeness). Instead I used Teleport so that I could be far away from the Assassins (it takes forever for them to come near you when you are on the far corners of the map), then I used the same progression as Zodiac except that I started with Haste on myself, then dealt with the Assassins, then their demon self, then the classic Slow/Foxbird/Steal Shield/Steal Weapon...

I had crazy percentages for stealing though, in comparison with my other games (probably coming from zodiac compatibility), so it didn't took that long to get the whole set.

i was just kidding about the cheating part, although personally i don't like to use calculators because i think it's the most unfair ability in the game. if you were trying to learn ultima, i can see how it would be hard, because you have to worry about the girls using stop/dead on you as well, if you can't just kill them right off the bat.

anyway...deep dungeon here i come!
