yeo, What's your favorite use for merit award?
I often equip it to make Relm stronger and sometimes, I'll give her a thife knife for a chance to steal something from the monsters which is a bonus. and incase you wonder where you'll find one, Possible spoilers: highlight to view you'll have to bet a Imp Halberd to get a cat hood and again for the Merit award so what's your use for the Merit award? Relm's my magic attacker, so giving her it would be meaningless fo' me...I (and I'm sure many others) will usually always give Gogo one for obvious reasons.

Stealing. . . Or should I say Treasure Hunting?
I use it to equip Theifs Knife in muti-party events. Usualy the Final dungeon is where I use it most, Stealing from the Goddesses gets you neat stuff. Other then that if you give Gau any halfway decent weapon with it, his attack power goes through the roof. I found Merit Award to be quite interesting but it makes weapon mangement a more of a pain. I prefer Gem Box/Economizer or Ribbon/Saftey bit myself. Unless you have allot of time or like to exploit unthought of possibilities, Merit Award can be quite useless. However, it is fun to mess around with stats sometimes. Not like I remember what happens at any rate unfortunatly. I expect to see more experianced members/players prove me wrong. Another good use for it is adding more stats to some of your characters, via normaly unequipable weapons and armor. IE Speed, Magic Power Ect. Ect. Gau for sure.
Gau + Merit Award + Aura Lance + Stray Cat Rage = BIG DAMAGE. Regarding Stealing in Kefka's Tower. 1) Do not use Steal/Capture + Offering or even Offering + Thief's Knife. Especially with more than 1 enemy on the screen. Suppose there are 2 targets. Now suppose that with the Offering you Steal from target #1 twice then Steal from target #2 twice. If you successfully Steal from target #1, then successfully Steal from target #2 on the same attack, then you will ONLY get the second item and target #1's item will be lost forever. 2) Optimal Stealing strategy. Locke + high level + Sneak Ring + NO Thief's Glove, then use the Steal command. You have the highest possible chance to steal with this setup. For added effect include Gogo in the same party and Mimic Locke's Steal attempt. 3) Another optimal strategy for Kefka's Tower. [this multi-tip is stolen from almost all of the LLG guides] When designing 3 parties, always include Mog + Moogle Charm in the party which will run the longest distance. This is usually party #1 (ie. the farthest left party). Enter Kefka's Tower with Mog party, gather all equipment from chests with no Random Encounter!, exit Tower. Reenter putting Mog in the next party, gather all possible equipment. Repeat. Now enter Tower with party #1 containing the above-mentioned Locke + Gogo party as party #1 and Mog + Moogle Charm in party #2 or the longer-leg party. When you have Stolen from and defeated Inferno, then Warp/Warp Stone out and repeat with Locke + Gogo in party #2. With this simple, albeit time-consuming, strategy you should be able to Steal all the items from every Boss monster in the Tower. When you are done, you can go back through, fight all the normal monsters, to get them in Gau's Rage repertoire. Voila! |

Merit award is one of the coolest things in the entire game... I almost always give one to Gogo, give him like a pearl lance or something.
Lately I've fallen in love with this combo: Shadow with a Genji Glove and a Merit Award, with a Scimitar and a Strato. Now that's a ninja! I usually give one to Setzer too, since his cards/darts are fairly weak. -------------------- "Nothing exists, but atoms and the void" -Democritus |

Gau is the first character comes to mind: my upcoming Rage Guide adresses how grossly you can over-inflcate damage when combining Gau with the right weapon in the right situation.
Fun fact: With Merit Award and Fixed Dice, Gau will do 9999 damage on a 6/6/6 dice roll. On level ONE. Yup, that's with Catscratch. Thought I mentioned that... Second, as previously mentioned, Gogo. His strongest piece of body equipment is the Tao Robe, and while +5 Mag. Power and 10 % Mblock isn't half bad, his defenses are the lowest in the game. Where Gau can benefit offensively, Gogo mostly benefits defensively (although Merit Award's upgraded choice of weapon is very nice). Third, the last character who doesn't equip the Genji Armor, BehemothSuit or Snow Muffer: Sabin. Not only can the Merit Award do the same for Sabin what the does for Gogo, but Sabin's respectable Vigor is wasted on his weapons (Tiger Fangs are pretty crappy when you think about it), so a Punisher, Wing Edge or Sniper can really do something for him. A Merit Award allows you to use many weapons and armor you normally couldn't with that character.
I use it on Mog, because being my 2nd favorite character of all time, he deserves the best of everything. -------------------- Could you repeat that? |

I never use merit award, infact I find it useless since it usually takes away from what the character was supposed to do.

I thought the merit award was okayish it dosent beat a gembox/enconomiser or genjiglove/offering combo but i suppose you could give Gau the Illumina and a Ganulet to have 510 attack power

does this wind god gau thing make him attack more than once for 9,999 or just once. because if it is just once then who really cares because sabin does it 8 times with offering and genji glove.

ummmmmm so no one has the invincible mog?
merit award ribbon illumina paladin sheild snow muffler whatever the best helmet was called i pump his magic to 140 ish ((careful, if you go to high the damage resets, i went too high with terra once, and i couldnt use ultima cuz it looped back around and only did a few hundred damage ))and his hp to 9999. in the front row....he dealt ungodly ammounts of damage, physically or magiclly, and unless the monster has ignore defense attacks,......(( 99% of them dont )) mog takes one damage from physical attacks, and negligable damage from any magic that the paladin sheild doesnt eliminate, in the back row, he simply takes zero from physical attacks and even less from magic, and can still dance for 9,999 damage or ultima or merton for it, i prefer merton, since it heals mog and hurts whoever. |

Heh, I like toying around a bit and giving Sabin the Merit Award. Usually, the only weapon that Sabin can use, oddly, are claws, while I think every other character can use more than one kind. For instance, Edgar can use swords, lances, but I can't remember if he can use dirks and knives. I think he can. But anyway, that's two different types, so I jack up Sabin's stats with swords or lances, which are typically stronger.

Gau + Merit Award + Genji Glove + Tempest + Tempest
For some reason this often causes Gau to do two Catscratches in one turn, accompanied with Wind Slash. It's fun. -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! White Mage & Paladin |

In the Playstation Port of the game they riped Gau of being able to equip the Merit Award...
Also, if you super power up one character, you're leaving the rest of your clan with the second rate equipment, which may be a bad thing in areas like the Phonix Cave and Kefka's Tower. |

Considering moogle charm can prevent a team from having to face any battles, one or two superpowered characters doesn't seem that bad.
Plus everyone is going to end up with second-rate equipment anyhow. Since, you know, there aren't 14 paladin shields. |
