This is going to be hard without some ties, but I'll give it my best shot:
1. Ramza Beoulve: Always did the right thing and followed the path that led to what was right and just, never doing anything evil with the exception of taking a few lives, but he was responsible for erradicating the biggest threat to Ivalice and never asked for anything in return. 2. Laguna Loire: It was hard for me not to give him the #1 spot. He was as human as anyone and had his flaws and quirks and fate took two loves from him but despite all of that he was the hero who put an end to Sorceress Adel's tyrannical rule, led the great nation of Esthar to peace, and deeply cares about all of the people that he loves and who stood by him all the way. He's even led a life as a soldier, journalist/writer, freedom fighter, and ultmately Esthar's president. Plus, his machine gun and Desperado limit rock! 3. Kuja 4. Celes Chere 5. Cecil Harvey 6. Quistis Trepe 7. General Beatrix 8. Dycedarg Beoulve 9. Vivi Ornitier 10. Zell Dincht Not much to say about 3-10 except that the female Knights in FF are among my favorite characters, I couldn't allow myself to keep Quistis off the list and it was hard not to include Seifer, Zalbag, Delita, Setzer, Agrias, and I intentionally excluded Cloud and Sephiroth in favor of other characters that I like more. I will also add that Zell Dincht, in my opinion, is the coolest supporting main character in gaming history and Kuja has to be one of the greatest main villains ever. Wow, I really had to put a lot of thought into this, but I'm happy with my results. Edit Not only are these my top 10 favorite, but I think they are the 10 best with the exception of Dycedarg, who is only there for favoritism as other notable villains like Sephiroth, Weigraf, Seifer, and others should be considered better than him. 1 Reno- First off Reno is left handed, also Reno is just cool, a man of his word, and Reno has a penchant for alchohal.
2 Cid Highwind- He is just the best fighter in FFVII, Cid is the best pilot in the world, a dragoon, and Cid is just plain cool 3 Galuf- He was the old guy in his group, but that didn't stop hjim from kicking ass. Galuf was a well to do veteran, and always put the needs of others before his own 4 Kain Highwind- I don't need to say anything here 5 Zidane Tribal- Flirtatious thief/ninja, always willing to lenmd a hand to someone in need (especially a damsel in distress), Zidane often gives helpful advice to good friends, but he is human and worries abiout things all humans do 6 Tifa Lockhart- Tough as nails, long legs, martial artis, 30FF bra size. Need I say more? 7 Shadow- like Kain I don't really need to explain this one 8 Gilgamesh- Hard worker, Never gives up, gives you the genji equipment (even if you have to steal it from him) 9 Cait Sith- comical, fun, and just about the best magic user in FFVII, plus he is the cat's... 10 Red XIII- another FFVII character Red XIII is a wise dog-like creature, who can fight very well, Red XIII is very loyal and honest, and just flat out everything I would want in a pet. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Oh, why not? I get carried away with these things, you know.
1. Celes Chere - Possible spoilers: highlight to view She has a really remarkable emotional transformation in FF VI, going from a cold heartless Imperial general to a determined and feeling young woman who is the catalyst that reunites all of her former companions, who collectively are the only ones that can bring hope back to the world. She goes from part of the problem to the most important element in the last ray of hope. Plus, she was a great magic user who was also capable of wielding much of the best equipment in the game. Awesome. 2. Delita Hyral - Possible spoilers: highlight to view Delita was a really interesting character.... He was a peasant with a noble best friend who treated him as an equal, but the wake-up call of his sister's murder in the name of class prejudice changes his mind about nobles and peasants, leading him to joining the shrine knights' conspiracy to further his own ambitions of the throne. While he's on this new, selfish quest, he only trusts two people - himself and Ramza. Despite all of his awful thoughts and deeds, he always trusts and counts on Ramza, his old friend and the one person, noble or peasant, whom Delita honestly hopes will succeed in his own quest. Delita's intrigue really made the shrine knights' plot much more interesting, and from Chapter Two onwards he is probably the game's most mysterious and fascinating character. 3. Kain Highwind - Possible spoilers: highlight to view Kain is the original FF badass. His jealousy and determination make his frienship with Cecil a really complicated one - but his unwillingness to abandon this darkness allows for him to be controlled by Zeromus via Golbez. This darkness, driven by Zeromus, is the direct cause of many of the game's most significant plot twists and events. Kain's multiple betrayals, his inner conflict, and his reliability in battle make him one of the best characters in oldschool Final Fantasy. 4. Terra Branford - Possible spoilers: highlight to view Terra's transformation is somewhat different from Celes's. Instead of going from cold-hearted to warm-hearted, she has to learn human emotions from scratch, so to speak, as well as deal with her Esper heritage and her role in the new war. I still think that Celes is the stronger character, if only because the task of reuniting the party is placed upon her alone, but it's still hard not to acknowledge Terra's character development, too. Not to mention she's one of the game's best physical and magical powerhouses. 5. Auron - Possible spoilers: highlight to view Auron's backstory is simply awesome. He was the best and most faithful retainer of Spira's faith, but his faith is severely compromised after learning the truth from Yunalesca and witnessing Braska's death and Jecht's fate. Even in death Auron fulfills his promise to his former comrades, watching over and protecting Tidus and Yuna and guiding them along the path to end Spira's cycle of Sin. I honestly thought that FF X's plot was kinda contrived and not very interesting for the first three quarters of the game, but after the game's conclusion I had a new respect for FF X as a worthy entry in the series and also for Auron as one of the best examples of the "silent guide who knows more than he lets on" characters in any work of fiction I've ever seen. He's also one of the game's most powerful fighters, and Banishing Blade is one of the more useful Overdrives in the game. 6. Ramza Beoulve - Possible spoilers: highlight to view What can I say about Ramza? He isn't very complicated. Unlike Delita, he cares for all of his comrades and is willing to abandon his title in order to set things right. In many ways Ramza is Delita's ideological opposite. He ended up serving as the most important pawn in Delita's grand scheme, but he also was the only pawn that Delita genuinely cared for and the only person to survive the Beoulve name, outlasting his brothers by pursuing the righteous path and succeeding. Not to mention his balanced character build and near-broken unique abilities (ie Scream) make him a contender for the title of the game's most useful character. 7. Cloud Strife - Possible spoilers: highlight to view Cloud is one of the best characters in FF history, even if he is a bit overrated in my opinion. Cloud's character conflict stems from his own low self-esteem, his admiration of Zack, his desire to impress Tifa, and as a side-effect of Mako poisoning. What resulted is a man whose past and present are so confused that his psyche struggles through the game's first two thirds as some combination of himself, Zack, and an un-numbered Sephiroth clone. Only through the strength of his own will and the friendship and love he holds for Tifa and Aeris does Cloud wake up and realize who he is. Cloud's character development is fascinating - self-discovery and self-confidence are both achieved and the world is saved during Cloud's quest. And in-game, Cloud is by far the best character in your party, bar-none. Great stats for all occasions, powerful Limits, what else do you need? 8. Vivi Ornitier - Possible spoilers: highlight to view When I first played FF IX I sort of thought that Vivi was just an homage to the oldschool black mage character design. What he turned out to be was a very likeable character whose endearing mannerisms and clumsiness cause him to be a very popular character. However, behind those cute eyes and powerful spells, Vivi's character displays the fear, loneliness, and uncertainty of a newborn sentient race for whom death is something new and terrifying. Born as instruments of death but eventually exploited through fear of their own deaths, the black mages of FF IX represent something greater than a village of adorable magic users, with Vivi taking center stage. In-game, Vivi is one of the most useful characters to have. His magic is useful and powerful throughout the entire game, and his combos with Steiner are icing on the cake. 9. Cid Highwind - Possible spoilers: highlight to view Almost all of FF VII's secondary characters' storyline relevance and character development hinge on confronting and resolving past events and learning to move on. Cid is one of the best examples of that character archetype, having abandoned his lifelong dream to save the life of the well-meaning scientist Shera, living in Rocket Town for years in the shadow of his oldest dream while refusing to forgive Shera for her actions, and eventually achieving his dream, forgiving Shera, and moving on. Cid's own coarse personality and general irreverance also make him a surprisingly likeable character, while his usefulness in battle, boasting the game's best attack strength and a powerful set of Limits, is undeniable. 10t. Kefka Palazzo and Leo Cristophe - Possible spoilers: highlight to view I included them together for a reason. Kefka and Leo are opposites: Kefka is an insane and evil villain who is a product of Magitek, while Leo is an honorable and respected soldier who refused Magitek enhancement. Kefka and Leo are also more than that: Kefka represents the greed and other vices that the power of Magic brings people while Leo represents the hope of a world where peace and prosperity can reside. After the Empire betrays Leo and Kefka kills him in Thamasa, armageddon soon ensues and most of the world's hopes die with Leo at Kefka's hands. Celes, Terra, and co. quest in the World of Ruin to end Kefka's reign of terror and restore hope to the world, and in the game's conclusion the ray of hope survives as Kefka is defeated and Terra's newfound capacity for love allows Leo's memory to live on in her heart. I've long been of the opinion that FF VI is a story of hope lost and revived, and Kefka and Leo are great vehicles for those motifs. Plus, it's hard to deny that they're awesome: they're both quite powerful within the FF VI universe, Kefka is delightfully evil and insane, and Leo is likeable soldierly perfection. Both great characters within a brilliant story. Hey Auragaea, it's bad form to ask something like this of us and not post a list yourself! Get to it! 10. Marche- I picked Marche as one of the top 10 FF characters because of the way we see him grow. In most RPGs, many characters never change as the game progresses. Even if a character changes, it's probably a slight change, but with Marche, we are able to see how he develops through his speech, his personality, and his actions. He turns from a shy kid to a bold one, combatting his friends, his brother, and even himself for what he believes in.
9. Cloud- As much as I hate Cloud, he is definitely one of the best FF characters up to date. Conflicted with a lot of serious problems throughout the game, Cloud still overcomes them thanks to his trust in Tifa and his allies. The only thing I really liked about Cloud was his 360 change in his personality, transforming from a huge jackass to a trusting leader. He developed the most in FFVII, but unfortunately, SE didn't leave room for others to grow such as he did. 8. Galuf- Galuf is one of the best FF characters because of his courageous personality and attitude. When he was young, he was one of the 4 Warriors of Dawn who defeated ExDeath and sealed him away. He later returns again to Bartz's world to once again, seal ExDeath. In the real world, it'd be very hard for all of us to seal ExDeath, but Galuf does so twice. Even when his comrades retired, Galuf still came to Bartz's world to seal ExDeath by himself. 7. Barret- Barret isn't the most popular character from the main character roll in FFVII, but regardless, he is one of the best FF characters to me. He made my list because he gave up a lot to try and save his town and his best friend. Whilst most would've stopped where he failed, Barret still kept going on and vowed to avenge the destruction of his town and to protect his best friend's daughter. 6. Agrias- As a female, sexism is just something you'll have to deal with all your life. There will always be a male that thinks they're superior to females no matter what. Small things like getting picked on because of sex will eventually turn into serious things like rape. But unlike most females who sit back and act weak, Agrias is actually one that will lift up her sword to fight and to protect. Throughout the game, Agrias was worried about Ovelia and always strived to protect her. Even when the odds were against her, she was always ready to give her all. 5. Queen Brahne- A LOT of people hate Brahne because she's perceived as a monster. She did a lot of cruel and inhumane things to gain absolute power, destroying villages, people, and nearly her own daughter. But underneath it all, Brahne was a really caring mother. Brahne loved Garnet, even though she wasn't her own flesh and blood. Even when breathing her final breaths, we all could see how caring Brahne was. She's number 5 on my list because she's the most inhuman, yet the most human villain in the FF series. As much as we hate to admit it, we would all do almost anything for money and power, and it would take a lot to make us see the light. 4. Quistis- Quistis is a character we can all relate to. She's the character that represents a love we can never hold on to and nurture. Quistis was the teacher to the one she loved, so of course that led to her ultimate downfall. In the end, she learned from her student the difference between loving someone and caring for them. But before Quistis realized this fact, she actually gets to do one thing as a couple with Squall, even though both were oblivious to it. 3. Elia- Imagine being alone in a world filled with nothing but water. How would you react? Would you be able to function properly? Or would you run around panicking? Elia's response to this was to do her duty as a shrine maiden. Once she awoke, she immediately joined the player's party to help them on their quest. It takes an outstanding amount of courage to do something like that and that is why Elia is number 3 on my list. 2. Terra- Alone in the world without knowing the joy of loving and being loved is a hard thing. It's even harder if the person isn't human. Terra was such a person and her journey from the beginning of her life to her current place is remarkable. Instead of finding love within just another living soul, Terra was able to find love within many pure souls. By doing so, Terra proved to be the most human of all the characters in any FF game (along with Vivi). 1. Freya- In my opinion, Freya is the BEST Final Fantasy character. She has everything any character would want; strength, beauty, intelligence, and grace. She has a love life, but unlike many other characters, she doesn't let it take precedence over every single thing she does. Freya can be free loving as happy-go-lucky characters, but she also can be serious when the time calls for it. She doesn't have an extremely powerful role in the story, but she makes the perfect support character because she interacts well with all the characters and understands what they're going through. -------------------- And don't drive your car off a cliff like I did. Girl, no man is worth 10 points on your license. |

10. Palom & Porom: both are just funny in there own ways, with Palom making me think of Bart Simpson at times and Porom always there to to do something to Palom.
9.Kefka: one of the best villans of all time definetly desersve a spot here 8. Cid Highwind: Useful in and out of battle, and is quite a funny character too and is also my favorite Cid (even though FFVIII's Cid still looks like Robin Williams!) 7. Zell : what Tifa shoulda been, and is an improvment over Sabin, he deifently shoulda been in Kingdom Hearts II. 6. Yuffie: She was odd at first then advent children came around and now she is hot, who new two years could tun a ninja into a someone really hot ![]() 5. Zidane: A histerical and useful main character all at the same time, cloud and squall may have been cool, but Monkey boy had more persoanllity 4. Vivi: can we just say, best black mage ever? 3. Laguna: He was cool, funny, and useful and is overall FFVIII's best character, and his battle theme (any version regular, orc., black mages) is awesome. 2. Auron: awesome in battle, and totaly awesome at the same time, and he was a partner in KHII, he just gets better and better. 1. Rikku: (FFX version BTW) She was good in battle, the funniest character in the game, and was really hot too ![]() This post has been edited by GamblingCat on 23rd May 2006 23:19 |

10. Steiner
9.Cyan 8.Red XIII 7.Cecil 6.Terra 5.Yuna 4.Ramza 3.Tristan 2.Delita 1.Auron I mentioned all of these characters based on their traits and background. Most of them scarifice things for the greater good (most notably Ramza, Yuna(arguably the main character of FFX) and Auron) Tristan gets a mention from Mystic Quest because he has some of the best one liners, and if he had more development, could have been a great character. I tried to stray away from the 'popular characters' and focus on the ones I thought were best executed. I mention Steiner because underneath all of that incompetence he is really quite loyal and will do almost anything for Garnet. Red and Cyan because of their losses and the fact that they continue on. Cecil questioned his own motivations and became someone better because of it, I wanted to include Kain, but I felt that he wasn't as powerful as some of the others, I mean story wise. Though I must say, FFIV had a very complex cast, maybe more so than VII. IMO anyway. Well, there is my list. -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Some of the ones near the top of the list (further down) have some strong character traits I mention, but this list is almost entirely based on gameplay mechanics. I tried to be as objective as possible, but you may notice I have a soft spot for healers.
10. White Mage (Final Fantasy) Very few people are foolhardy enough to venture into the world without one of these puppies on their team. Healing, reviving, Holy/Fade, and the awesome magic of the Masamune make the White Mage (or Wizard) a force to be reckoned with. 9. Minwu (Final Fantasy II) When he joins your party, he is significantly stronger than your characters, having high HP, MP, weapons and magic skills, and more. In the original he also brings the Magiconch, which sells for precious Gil. In Soul of Rebirth, he is your White Mage and all around party leader, giving you access to Ultima. 8. Garnet (Final Fantasy IX) Not only can Garnet cast the ever important White Magic, she has strong summons that allow her to put the hurt on the enemy. Add in her Rackets, which are no slouch on damage for random encounters, and she's a solid character. 7. Reis (Final Fantasy Tactics) This is the human form, of course. Raising her up to have Calculator magic in her Dragoner job makes her an insane death machine. Who equips purses. 6. Cloud (Final Fantasy VII) Once again, love him or hate him, it's hard to argue with Omnislash. He has several other good limits, too, and his strength is very high. He can also make a pretty good mage, as well. 5. Rinoa (Final Fatasy VIII) Some people hate her, some people love her. I don't think anyone is on the fence. However, with Angel Wing and Meteor, she can break the damage limit and destroy anything and everything. 4. Terra (Final Fantasy VI) Sort of similar to Vivi in that she is searching for her identity. She is very versatile, being capable of being raised as a mage, a warrior, or a hybrid. She has good stats all around, one of the highest magic stats in the game, and can equip all of the best items. 3. Vivi (Final Fantasy IX) Another character who has both storyline and gameplay going for him, he's also one of the most lovable and cuddly characters in the series. Doomsday can both destroy the enemy and heal our entire party at the same time, and he adds extra strength to Steiner. Add to this that you have him in your party for the entire game, and you've got one powerful black mage. 2. Aerith (Final Fantasy VII) One of the most iconic characters in all of the gaming canon, Aerith is overpowered for the time you have her in your party. Her magic stat is through the roof, and her limits are generally very good (except things like Call of the Earth, which sucks). Great Gospel wrecks everything. 1. Ramza (Final Fantasy Tactics) This is a hands-down win in both gameplay and story. Storywise, he does what he knows to be right, even when it can mean sacrificing everything. I find him a very emotionally deep character, and I was sad he never got a romantic interest. Gameplay-wise, he totally wrecks with his uber stats and ability to equip a variety of equipment, including the almighty butt pants. |

I took it to mean PLAYABLE characters. Since you said BEST and not FAVORITE, which I assumed meant in sheer numbers.

Very difficult to answer... but I'll give it a shot:
1.- Cecil 2.- Cid Highwind 3.- Quistis 4.- Faris 5.- Squall Leonhart 6.- Celes 7.- Aeris 8.- Cloud Strife 9.- Irvine Kineas 10.- Galuf Sadly, I found FFIX characters to be, well... just average... although Steiner is the best one. Appendix!
Top 10 Villains/Bosses (possible spoilers, I guess) 10. Bizzarro-Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII) one of the more complicated bosses in the series. He has no specific weakness to exploit, instead you have to switch to lesser-geared parties to kill off parts of him (and his head, AGAIN), then switch back and destroy another part of him, rinse and repeat. 9. Tonberry (Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, etc.) It's cute. It's slow. RUN. (Technically not a boss, but I felt it deserved mentioning.) 8. Demon Wall (Final Fantasy IV, VII, XII, etc.) It's a wall. And yet, it seems to want to kill you. And it can. 7. Warmech (Final Fantasy) Holy crap, it just did HOW MUCH damage? 6. Borghen (Final Fantasy II), because the bastard keeps coming back for more. 5. The Undying (Final Fantasy XII) I don't know what it's supposed to be, but that battle is truly epic. He becomes immune to everything at several points in the battle, and you have to stand there and wait. Counter-intuitive, but cool. 4 Zalbag (Final Fantasy Tactics) He agrees that he should be the brother to fall, but he still doesn't make it easy! 3. Rubicant(e) (Final Fantasy IV), he is an "honorable" bad guy. He restores your HP and MP, because he wants to see if you truly can defeat him. How awesome is that? 2. Odin (Final Fantasy IV, VIII, etc.), the fact that there is almost always a time limit of some sort ad that Odin doesn't usually retaliate, he just wants to see if you are worthy. 1. Kefka (Final Fantasy VI), because he's the worst kind of villain, the kind that kills and destroys for the sake of killing and destroying. Or because he thinks it's funny. |

1.) Celes
I played FFIX first, so I used to put my second and third favorite characters before her. I didn't particularly care much for FFVI, but the character backgrounds blew me out of the water. Celes had a very developed character personality, she was a great character in battle, and had the coolest looking sprite imo. Runic sucks, but everything else makes up for that. She's also over 9000 times better than Terra. 2.) Freya Final Fantasy IX had one main thing wrong with it: lack of character development for the potentially interesting characters. Unfortunately, Freya was one of them. Who couldn't love a dragoon rat? ![]() 3.) Beatrix This chick kicks ASS. ...Literally. I only wish she was playable. Oh yeah, and she's hot. ![]() 4.) Yuffie 5.) Cid 6.) Tifa 7.) Rydia 8.) Mog 9.) Locke 10.) Zidane Yeah, sorry, I'm lazy. |

Playable, is it?
1- Beatrix (FF9) The girl with the eyepatch that won't finish you off because she's cocky. 2- Irvine (FF8) I love Irvine. Guns and girls, it's all about guns and girls. 3- Cid (FF7) Isn't Cid something? The rough guy with the caring inside... His cigarette is also the source of 10% of the pollution in the World. If the WEAPONs hear about this... 4- Quina (FF9) Quina is french. Why else would s/he love frogs that much? And eating an Adamantoise alone must be a difficult feat to achieve. 5- Setzer (FF6) The owner of the world's only airship, Setzer is like the flamboyant, stylish, non-smoking version of Cid Highwind. And he couldn't be better. 6- Locke (FF6) The thie... treasure hunter. 7- Edge (FF4) He's a ninja. He's royalty. He tries to attack Rubicante with a fire attack. Has you head exploded yet? 8- Leon (FF2) I hate you Leon. You just appear at the end, you're bad. I should loathe you. But you're just so cool. 9- Kain (FF4) Got to love Kain. DEATH FROM ABOVE! 10- Kiros (FF8) I just love this guy. I mean, Laguna's cool too, but Kiros is just plain awesome. For God's sake, he uses friggin katars! #10 Tseng(FFVII)
Even though Tseng is a member of the Turks, he didn’t seem to be an evil character. Tseng promised Zack to watch over Aeris and even though it might have seemed that he was just tormenting her. Every time Tseng caught aeris he would try to persuade her to join Shinra instead of kidnapping her, until he had no choice but to take her in. Tseng also helped Cloud when he reached the temple of ancients by giving him the keystone. His motives are a mystery but one thing is for sure he was a protagonist in an antagonist outfit. And plus if he was such a bad guy why would vincent rescue himm in Final Fantasy Advent Children? Plus he was the leader of the turks, possibly the-coolest antagonist gangs out of the series. #9 Zell (FFVIII) Zell is energetic, loud, overconfident, and very friendly the exact opposite of Squall being a great compliment to the protagonist. Even though Zell can be reckless at times his loyalty to his comrades and his honorable heart made him an immediate favorite. Zell has many memorable moments; from when Zell accidently told the sorceress that they were from garden. When he was captured in the prison, and defended Quistis and Selphie from the abusive prison guard. Or when Edea is no longer possessed by the sorceress, Zell demonstrates his honorable heart and volunteers to be her escort. Bottom line Zell is the kind of follower any leader wants on the team “You tell us to go, we go. Even if it's a losing battle†with that kind of attitude he may have been one of the best supporting character in the series. His skill in battle wasn’t very impressive but then again no one in FF8 really stood out with their fighting abilities, it mostly came down to the GFs. #8 Queen Brahne (FFIX) Quote (Auragaea @ 21st May 2006 16:04) Queen Brahne- A LOT of people hate Brahne because she's perceived as a monster. After reading Auragaeas' piece on Queen Brahne I have to say that he convinced me that she deserves to be in the top ten, and I couldnt of said it better myself. When she died I felt sorrow because i realised that what happened to her could of happened to any one, like Auragaes stated. The only thing i disagree with is obviously that she is my number 8 instead of number 5. #7 Auron (FFX) Auron was the veteran of the group who made a promise to take care of Yuna and Tidus. His devotion to his fallen comrades was the only thing that gave him the strength to go down MT. Gagazet and into the calm lands. He was consumed with self-reproach for his self-perceived failure of Jecht and Braska, as he didn't stop them from sacrificing themselves. Auron provided guidance to the rest of the party but not doing too much knowing that there were some things they had to discover for themselves. In the end he was able to be sent to the farplane where he was able to finally rest since he helped free Spira from Sin and fulfilled the promises to his departed. Auron was also had the highes HP and the strongest defense, and physical attack of the group, depending on how you leveled everyone, making him a must when the player faced bosses. #6 Shadow (FFVI) Shadow is a very unique mysterious character with outstanding character development. Shadow demonstrates a cold selfish greed for money by doing favors for the returners and the empire never pledging his allegiance to anyone. Then he does a complete 360 turning into a courageous hero who “sacrifices†himself to save the returners from Kefka (I didn’t see that one coming.) Shadow may also have one of the most underrated back stories of the series. Shadows’ life changes when his partner Baram is on the verge of death, and asks Clyde (shadow) to take him out of his misery. Shadow unable to take the life of his friend or stand by and watch helplessly as he dies, is overwhelmed and runs away leaving Baram to die. Shadow then ends up in Thamasa where he marries and has a daughter (who turns out to be realm one of the playable characters). Even though he has a family, he runs away again. Then decides to change his identity to shadow and live out the rest of his days as a paid assassin, accompanied by his dog that followed him after he ran away. Shadows value in game battle was mediocre until the end of the game where shadow can throw the Atma weapon at kefka killing him in one blow, that’s probably the most useful/cheapest way to beat a final boss in video game history. #5 Celes (FFVI) Celes’s kindheartedness, loyalty and dedication alone places her in the top ten. I think it was amazing despite the fact that she spent her childhood as a weapon for the empire to still be one of the most caring characters in the series. She demonstrates her loyalty twice, once when Kefka tells Locke that Celes was a double agent, and even though Locke doubted her she decides to warp herself, the soldiers and Kefka to another location to saving Locke and the rest of the team. The other time being when Kefka gives her a sword and orders her to kill her comrades but instead she attacks Kefka. Her dedication was stronger than any of the other returners for she was the one who brought everyone back together in order to defeat Kefka and save the world. She was also a good asset in battle her rune blade and magic power was very useful throughout the entire game. #4 Sephiroth (FFVII) Despite what you may think about Sephiroth he went from a well respected war hero who was the strongest in soldier to a crazed lunatic who wants to destroy the planet. But his personality never really changed yeah he went crazy but for the most part stayed cold, ruthless and intelligent. Sephiroth turns evil when he learns and misinterprets his origins. Believing himself as the last of the Ancients, Sephiroth enacts a vendetta against mankind, with the ultimate goal of becoming a god and controlling the planet. My favorite quote has to be when Sephiroth asks cloud what he cherishes the most so he may simply take it away from him. Sephiroth is one of the most famous antagonists in video game history and for good reason; he is the character everyone loved to hate; from killing Aeris, to toying with Clouds mind, to just simply massacring everyone in the shinra building. I believe anyone would agree that when finally beating Sephiroth it was one of the most enjoyable final fantasy victories. #3 Yuna (FFX) Yuna from the beginning of the story to the end displayed the most consistent selflessness I have seen from any FF character. Yuna always put on a fake smile to make the hard times easier for everyone else even when sin would kill people and she had to send them to the farplane. Yuna even agreed to marry Seymour, a man whom she didn’t love in order to give joy to Spira. She believed she had to sacrifise herself in order to save Spira, and even when she was tried for murder and treason she still continued on her conquest to defeat Sin and save the people who were against her. In the spring in the forest when Tidus attempts to convince her to quit her pilgrimage and stay with him, she thinks about how happy that would make her but changes her mind when her selfless sense of duty to Spira makes her continue on. Demonstrating again how selfless she is, when Yunalesca tells her one of her guardians must die in order to defeat Sin she refuses and goes against everything she believed in insisting there has to be another way. Beside from that she had strong healing magic and was able to summon aeons, she was definetly one of the most useful character when it came to fighting. #2 Aeris(FFVII) Aeris made the ultimate sacrifice to save the planet and to be able to do that at a young age was remarkable. Aeris played an important role, when Sephiroth takes control over Cloud at the forgotten capital and instructs him to kill Aeris, Cloud manages to stop himself for the first time and then thus resulting in him learning how to resist Sephiroths control. Even when Aeris died she gave the world a last chance for survival when she called forth holy in order to stop meteor. The party learns that Sephiroth is blocking holy’s power from working so in order to save the planet all they have to do is kill him. Plus Aeris death scene was arguably the sadist scene in final fantasy history. Aeris magic strength and limit break was very useful, any gamer who prefers to have a mage most likely chose to bring her into battle. #1 Vivi (FFIX) Vivi is the most innocent character in the series making him a very likeable character. He reminds me of a child who is learning the way of the world and his place in it. Vivi’s was unsure of his existence causing him to be very stressed, until he meets Mr. 288 who explains the nature of 'death' to Vivi, thus helping him to eventually come to grips with his existence. Vivi also started as a boy who was frightened during every serious situation for example, when he was captured by several townspeople and brought to the black mage production plant hidden underground and he sits there and cries until Zidane and Garnet come to save him. In the end he grew into a man who overcame his fears and was ready to face Kuja disregarding the danger. There is also some controversy as if he died at the end of the game or not, if it’s true or not the fact is there was never any closure for Vivi and I personally like when a characters ending is open for everyone’s own interpretation. His black magic, and his combo with Stiener made him one of the most valuable characters I have ever played with, guarantying him a spot when going in to battle. FF 8 = VIII, not XIII
FF 6 = VI, not XI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_numerals ![]() This isn't mean in a bad mode, but it won't harm to know those numbers, they are appearing everywhere. This post has been edited by Bas on 1st September 2009 13:51 |
