Well, since Halloween is only 3 weeks away from tomorrow, I figure it's time to start planning how I'm going to make a fool of myself this year. My friends and I usually do a theme every year and then we all dress accordingly for school and such. Last year they decided to do LotR (yes, I know, cliched, but I had no say in it), and I had to let my stubble grow in for awhile....so itchy.
Anyways, so this year they want to do Mario and company. Mario and Luigi are taken. I'm not really sure which character I should be so I'll throw a few ideas out there and hopefully a few people here will let me know which would be the best (basically decide for me since I really can't pull the trigger on any of them). I'm about 6' tall and around 165 lbs. I'm not huge, but I'm a fairly decent size. That being said, here are all the possible options:
Now we start getting creative:
So yea, any advice and recommendations would be appreciated. -------------------- Is PJ |

I definitely think you should be the Goomba.
Pirhana Plant: Hard, but possible. Huge cardboard flower, with polka dots. You could use a Peter Pan costume, and add cardboard leaves. ![]() Power Star: Heh, easy enough...triangles in front of your legs and arms, and a cone on top of your head. You can wear a yellow shirt with a smilie face on it. ![]() This post has been edited by Kimahri on 9th October 2005 22:02 -------------------- eh? |

Might wanna carry around a couple of Power up Blocks for accessories! Here's a site with instructions on how to make them as well as the templates for printing out the artwork.

I was Toad in 5th grade. Still one of the best costumes I ever had - my mom made the vest and pants for me. We made the cap from a foam cushion of some sort trimmed into the shape of a mushroom cap, and covered with an old pillowcase (if you're looking for tips).

sax_russel_the_great, that site is amazing! I just might do that in addition to whatever I decide on. That's hilarious!
R51, I hadn't really thought of using foam; that'sa really good idea. Even if I'm not Toad, foam is still a nice material. Maybe for a Pirhana Plant head or something. ![]() I'll discuss this with my friends and see which they prefer. -------------------- Is PJ |

Princess Peach - Like you said, it's a simple enough attire and should be fairly cheap to put together. Just be sure to post pictures afterwards.
![]() I remember seeing someone dressed up as a Bob-omb several Halloweens ago. The body was made up of paper maché, painted black with white eyes. They had a silver wind-up key stuck to the back that appeared to be made outta cardboard, and they topped it off by wearing the fuse on their head, like a hat. You could use foam in place of the paper maché, I suppose. A Shyguy costume would be easy to create, I imagine. Just make the mask from cardboard, paint it white, and color on the three black dots (cutting out eye holes in the 'eye dots', of course). Then find a large piece of red (or green, or blue) material that can cover most of your body, including your arms, and is long enough to come down to around your ankles. Make a hood, put on a brown belt and a pair of blue shoes and you're set. But like with Toad, you'd be one giant Shyguy. Note that I've never made a costume in my life, so I might not be one to talk. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. Don't know how this would work, as I don't know much about making costumes, but there also is Boo, Geno (Super Mario RPG), Mallow (also from SMRPG), and i guess thats all my ideas...

I've made my own costumes before XD Broken Miho of Megatokyo and Gothic Little Bo Beep
![]() Either way, I actually think Yoshi'd be pretty fun to do. Lots of green face paint, make a foam/felt-but-stuffed, green tail, make a backpack look like a saddle and wear it, make sure the tail can come off for sitting down, wear something green and puffy around your If you wanted to be an interesting Toad, here's an interesting way. Kids at our school have dresses up similarly to this (only not with a Toad theme) method, and it's looked cute (and hilarious when they did the worm XD): -What you need is red/white paint, a pillowcase, a kid's size small blue vest, kid's size small white sweatshirt, foam, wire hangers, and kid's size white sweatpants. -Put a pillowcase over you, so it covers your head through bottom of ribcage. -Make the cap of the mushroom big enough so it encompasss all around your head and touches your shoulders, cutting out a piece for your face or something like that. This changes the proportions up greatly; now where his head is, your chest will be. Dig it? -On the top half of the pillowcase, where your chest is (I'm assuming you're a guy ^^ ![]() -Sew the top of the white sweatshirt to the bottom of the white pillowcase, so that Toad's arms will stick out about your stomach area. Stuff the arms with batting/cotton, and maybe shape them it a wire hanger as if you're walking and add gloves in the shape of a thumbs up. Stuff, sew the fingers to the palm, and make sure you over stuff the thumb or something to give it that cute, chubby proportion. -add the kid's sweatpants, which should cover from your feet to your knees. All in all your anatomy VS Toad costume: Toad's mushroom cap= your head and neck His head= your chest to hips-ish area His torso= your lower stomach and upper legs His legs= your knees (maybe thighs) You'll have to walk funny, but it'll look hilarious. XD And about the arms- My guess is either keep them in said pillowcase over your head, to keep Toad's head shape, or poke holes out of where his head would be, which would look rather awkward. Other than those, that'd be an awesome costume. -Add vest, probably sew it on to keep it. If you're a girl, I'd so say do Peach! That would be darling. If you wanted to make a cheesey- yet- maybe cute Peach, get a kid's size Sleeping Beauty costume, alter the sleeves, buy a green brooch, and curl your hair. Shortest Halloween dress ever. -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Just thinking about a person dressed up in these costomes makes me smile! Thanks!
![]() If you want to get reallly creative, You could be a Lakatu (I think that's how you spell it) You wouldn't have to deal with the shell, but you'd have to walk instead of fly. You could even find a way to make spineys for throwing. -------------------- |

I think you should be a Koopa, but that's just a bit of bias on my part.
Yeah, like Koops the Koopa from Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Being a Koopa would be so cool. If I was making a costume, I'd go as Koopie Koo the Koopa from Paper Mario. I haven't made very many costumes, but I still want to do something with Mag (see my avatar). When I was still in college, I dressed up like Sailor Mars for a party, albeit a blue Sailor Mars (but then again, that costume wasn't too hard: high heels, short pleated skirt, Sailor shirt, voila). -------------------- kame, tortue, tortuga, schildkröte, tartaruga, turtle "Arthur Dent?" I guess I should've specified gender.
![]() Lakitu is another possibility. I would prefer to be something from the typical Mario series, not Mario RPG (even though that's an amazing game, I don't think many people would catch the reference). I could also be Bullet Bill, I guess. I mentioned Pirhana Plant to Mario and he said it'd be amazing. If I could pull it off, that is. We'll see. sax_russel, I'm definitely gonna make some power boxes. I love that site now. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |

I personally would go with the Thwomp. Sounds easy to make, and it would look frigging sweet, if done right.

You can make the shapes for the bigger things out of chicken wire. It bends pretty easily.
If you want to do Yoshi, work on the hat/mask first. If I were you, I'd make it so oversized that the hole for his mouth was big enough to see out of. You might be able to find some sort of dinosaur mask along these lines and repaint it, or you could build one out of paper maché and smell glue forever. Once you did that, making a Yoshi suit should be easy. Think of your standard bunny costume (the kind guys wear, not the skimpy leotard + ears and tail variety) but green. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Quote (Caesar @ 10th October 2005 11:47) I guess I should've specified gender. ![]() I figured your comment 'bout your height and facial hair kinda gave your gender away. Pink dresses in that shade seem pretty hard to find anyway, but there's always fabric dye. You'd need it for the darker pink around the bottom of the skirt anyway. The real catch would be finding a poofy dress like Peach's. Hey, if I was a guy, I'd try and go for it! ![]() Have you considered dressing as either Wario or Waluigi? They aren't part of the older crew, but at least they appear in more than one game. The advantage would be simply finding out how your Mario and Luigi friends are making their costumes, then base it off of one of those. Lakitu would be pretty cool, but you probably wouldn't want to make a full body costume due to his Jugem's Cloud. You could likely get by just dressing up the top half of your body then using cotton balls or something similar to build a cloud you can wear around most of your lower body. Maybe attached/glued to a belt somehow. And to echo Barrylocke, you could even make a li'l Spiny to carry 'round, with or without hanging it from an old fishing rod (or a stick with a long string tied to it). And since I forgot to say it before, if you were to make a Bob-omb suit, foam could easily substitute paper maché. It'd be much easier to move around in, at least. I dunno how that one guy managed to even bend over... -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. Maybe you could use the POW Block idea from that site to make spinys. I can't get to the site, so I can't see how to make them, but If you do lakitu, it's another nice idea.
Orr you could be fishing lakitu If you have a fishing pole lieng around -------------------- |

What, no lakitu costumes! Not only would you get to float/walk around in a cloud disguise, but if you make a few spinys, you get to pelt people with 'em. It would be up to you whether or not you include the fishing pole some of 'em carry, though.
Cloud material...well, you could try and go with some kind of fluffy stuffing, like inside of a couch cushion or pillow (not sheetrock ![]() -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

If it's not too late, I would like to vote Thwomp. The sheer ungainlyness of the custome would make you stand out in the group. Not to mention Thwomp was inherently cool. You could even paint the front and the back differently to show the transistion for passive to "angry" (or perhaps constipated) state.

Haha. Some creative ideas coming in now. I love it!
Lakitu would be cool, but finding so great an amount of cotton balls or stuffing to conceal my lower half would be...ummm...time consuming and/or expensive. I don't care about time-consuming, but expensive I do. ![]() I don't really want to do Wario or Waluigi since they're not really in many of the earlier games. I think we're basing the costumes off Super Mario Bros. 3 (except Luigi's girlfriend who he wants to be Daisy...I don't even know where Daisy came from. She was just...there in Mario Golf). That leaves Thwomp, Goomba, Pirhana Plant, Bullet Bill, Lakitu, and Bob-omb. Bob-omb would be easy, I'm sure. As would Thwomp and Goomba. And both would be rcognized (I hope) and worth a few laughs. I doubt anybody would catch the Bullet Bill reference, but it would sure be fun to chase Mario and Luigi around school for an entire day (yay!). ![]() I dunno. The others in my group don't really care what I am. They're leaning towards Goomba, Thwomp, and Bob-omb, too. We're trying to get others to join us, too, so I wouldn't really have to pick which of the three takes priority, since we could have more than one. For Thwomp, I was hoping to make a collapsable box (to fit through the doorways, of course) with him painted on it. The ideal situation would be to have two handles inside for both my arms, and then a strip of the box on the bottom missing so I could sorta swing down the hallway inside the box, but it would look like Thwomp was just like...hopping down the hallway. Like...my feet start towards the front of the box, I lift of the box with the handles and move it up and forward so that my feet are now at the back of the box; I would then support my weight with the handles, swing my feet to the front, and repeat. Hard to describe what I'm thinking of, really. I would need to reinforce it somehow so it could withstand my weight when I moved. If anybody can find a recording of the noise Thwomp makes when he falls online, could you post it here? If I can't find it, that's a huge strike against the costume. -------------------- Is PJ |
