Simple question. What type of games do you emulate? I vote dead systems because the games are hard to find nowadays, and their are some real treasures out their. That's how I got FFIV, FFV, FFVI, Paper Mario and Chrono Trigger Don't forget the no mentioning of sites with ROM's rule ![]() -------------------- |

Considering that I could've emulated GBA games long ago and just haven't, I have to pick dead systems.
But that can always change if I find the right excuse. -------------------- |

I mainly only emulate SNES and NES, therefore, dead systems. I have emulated GBA in a few instances, but they were running too slow for my liking, so I stopped.
I really only play FFV and FFVI. I played Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, CT, FFIV, MMX2, Robotrek, and other favorites from SNES. The only NES game I played was Battletoads. I'm not too huge into the emulation thing, but I enjoy playing a few favorites in fast-forward mode to achieve the perfect game in less hours. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |

I mainly emulate from dead systems, but I prefer to play my PS1 games via ePSXe than from my PS2. It has the frame skip option, and since I have them all ripped rather than playing from the CD, it still plays with the same efficiency as the console would.

I don't feel bad at all about emulating things because I prefer to play games on actual consoles to the point that if the game is available in another form, I will buy it. I only use emulation when I'm desperate to play something that I simply can't obtain in any other form.

Dead systems for games that you can't buy (or ever could). I'm guilt free seeing as in the long run, the game makers don't really mind.
I'd much rather play in the console though. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Dead systems. Emulation provides a wonderful opportunity to play games you missed out on in the past, and are either too rare or too expensive to find now. If classic NES, SNES, or Genesis games were available for purchase now at a reasonable price, then I'd buy them. Unfortunately - handheld ports notwithstanding - this is largely not the case.

For me, it depends on several factors.
1. It's probably a 'dead' system. Even SNES cartridges are becoming harder to find in used racks at mall game stores, and I don't go to malls that often anyways. N64 cartridges have been appearing, but N64 is not easily well emulated, because of the joystick functionality of the controller. (I would assume this control problem occurs with every console that has a joystick on the controller.) 2. It's a game that's too freakishly hard to be worth my time on the real thing. I may have gotten myself stuck somewhere in the game, unable to proceed except via cheating (e.g. needlessly difficult boss, can't beat a certain level, etc.). In which case, instead of letting it sit at the back of my head, I simply cheat. While I normally dislike cheating, it's just a game, and a badly-designed game (coughNESGhostsnGoblinscough) doesn't mean I have to suffer confinement to dying at a fixed point in the game (more annoying if it's abnormally early). Given that my tastes generally fall into games of 'dead' systems, and that most such super-difficult or badly-designed games were made for 'dead' systems (e.g. what I mentioned earlier, and Megaman Xtreme 2, and Mega Man 7, etc.), these tend to be games for 'dead' systems. (However, even with emu, I STILL get stuck in Secret of Mana and Tales of Phantasia.) 3. 'Educational value'. I still maintain, as much as I hate the Sailor Moon RPG ("Another Story"), that I have the ROM of that for educational purposes. More particularly, how not to design an RPG, as well as what things were actually rather okay. I claim this for most of the RPGs I have. Sure, it's a claim with no legal standing, but at least it's a justification for myself. 4. It's a game I already have. This applies to Tail 'Gator, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Crystal, Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario RPG.... Also, here, I count games that are very similar to games I have, for example, Pokemon Red and Pokemon Silver. 5. Games that I'd like to try out, which I'm pretty darn sure suck. Example: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, for SNES. (These usually get deleted five minutes later anyways.) 6. Games that are only available translated via ROM editing/hacking, or are only available in a not-as-sucky-as-the-official translation via these means. Examples: Wily and Light's Rockman Board Game, Final Fantasy V. (The latter also has MUCH better music than the PS version.) 7. I might not have enough drive space for some games. My computer doesn't have that much hard drive memory, and some of the newer games can have a size on the order of magnitude of one gigabyte, or more. Another consideration inhibiting my emulation of newer games. 8. I hate lag times, which occur with just about all CD-based games. 9. Okay, I don't have money for a GBA. I emulate stuff that's either 1) on a now-defunct system that is no longer making new games or 2) games for a system not described by (1) that have never been released in the US. The only game under (2)'s classification is Fire Emblem 6: Fuuin No Tsurugi, though. I have NES, SNES, Genesis, Neo-Geo, N64, and GBA emulators (GBA just for FE6), only because I never have owned/no longer own any of those systems. I still prefer to get cartridges or discs when I can (hence my ownership of two of the NES Classic Series games), but I have quite the EMU library on my hands.

My emulating is limited to dead systems, yeah. If it is possible to get it legally, I'll do so, but I'm not going to fork out for a SNES and games on Amazon or eBay when only the seller will be making money it's so much easier to emulate anyway. I do, however, have a GBA emulator and games. GBA games are actually harder to find over here than one might think, and the GBA my sister has laying about somewhere is a wreck.

Emulating Ol Skool systems. It's hard to find the game you ACTUALY wanna play, so I think it's better to just emulate them!

I play games I ultimately aspire to obtain some how, which is pretty much a backwards foundation since most play the games and then decide if they'll purchase. So, basically, I believe that my eventual purchase rectifies that instant (and illegal) gratification.
Of course, abandonware and the like is free game, and I have no qualms with playing that to my heart's content. Now, if I could only find NiGHTS into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon Saga for Saturn... -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

Having been recently initiated into game emulation, I'm sticking with dead systems. More specifically, I'm limiting meself (more or less) to SNES games that either are next to impossible to find or were never available in the US in the first place. How dare the Japanese people try and keep those cool games to themselves

I don't emulate games at all. I like the idea of ownng the game. Until I do I normally don't wan tto play it.

The only games I care to emulate are that of the SNES and NES. Most roms are easy to find and the actual cartidges are rare and/or expensive. Still, I like playing the actual cartridges whenever possible, as that was the way they were meant to be played.

The industry is no longer main concerned with people emulating old systems. Moderator Edit None of this is actually new information and it was removed because it's perilously close to describing how to pirate software - which is taboo to discuss here. I've emulated games that are from dead systems. The fact is that finding an actual cart of Legend of Zelda 2 is too difficult to find. Much less more aincient games and systems. How about arcade games no longer availible in your local arcade? I've emulated copies of old school Shinobi and the like. I miss those games ;.x

I only emulate games from the NES, SNES and Genesis, mainly because finding the games for those consoles are harder now. But if I still had my SNES and found a copy of FFVI or Contra 3, I'd pick it up in a heart beat.

I've downloaded a few games that I own already, but are damaged or stolen. (Like a friend of one of my best buds stole my gba games and sold them for crack money.) Otherwise I stick to the dead systems.

I only emulate the games I have up my grandmoms house. Which are Atari 2600 NES and SNES. So yea, dead systems. And I prefer my RPGs emulated because of turbo mode. Makes things much eaiser.
