I searched, and it doesn’t look like I’m seriously stepping on the toes of another thread. Except maybe the one that allowed any couple whatsoever, but that thread deserves to be stepped on. (kidding. Kidding!)

warning: contains some spoilers

I am curious to know what people think about a possible match for Terra. Did Terra developed feelings for Locke, and would he have made a good match? Or do you believe that Leo would have been a better one? What about the other men— principally Edgar, Sabin or Setzer? (Other options are kind of stretching it, Shadow included). Or was Terra not about romance at all, just about love for the children, who accepted and loved her as she is?

Here’s my opinions:

Terra and Locke:
Although it’s not heavily supported, my view (or really, preference) is that Terra developed feelings for Locke, but withdrew once she perceived his feelings for Celes. She was probably depressed over it for a while, then grew to accept it. They probably would have made a good couple had Celes not entered the scene.

Terra and Leo:
Leo’s attentions seemed to be rooted out of some attraction for Terra (coupled with regret for what he did), and he would have made a good match. I don’t think that Terra had time to really bond with him, however. She only responded to his attentions on the boat scene occasion (hence her speech with the flowers).

Future match?

Terra and Setzer:
Evidence: There isn’t much interaction, as far as I recall. Some people mention that they cling to each other before blown off the airship. But it may be that they’re just trying to avoid getting blown off?
Counter-evidence: No meaningful interaction.
My opinion: A long time ago, I thought that Setzer would be a good match for Terra, and I was not inclined to like Edgar/Terra because Edgar is a “flirt”. But someone actually changed my mind by pointing out that Setzer is the REAL playboy of the story, with his apparent lifestyle of ‘gambling, wine and women’. Therefore, he would not be sufficiently sensitive towards/protective of Terra. (As that person said, “he would take her as a trophy wife of sorts”). Setzer is better matched with someone tough and assertive, like Daryl.

Terra and Edgar:
Evidence: he flirts with her during that famous Figaro scene.
Counter-evidence: he’s a flirt in general. There’s even that Relm scene, although I prefer to think it was a joke to show how ‘spunky’ Relm is. (Note, however, that he never flirts with Celes.) Also, there’s no other really meaningful interactions between them on a personal level.
My opinion: I think that Edgar’s flirtations are never too serious. He seemed to be more of a light-humored type of flirt. He is also very responsible (for his kingdom) and loyal (to his people). These qualities would probably carry out as loyalty for someone he really cared for. So ever since then, I favored Edgar/Terra over Setzer/Terra.

Of course, both Edgar and Setzer can be argued either way (i.e. that either is the worse flirt/womanizer), depending on your preference.

Terra and Sabin:
Evidence: they joked around for a little bit (well, maybe one line) when they first met.
Counter-evidence: just like Setzer, no meaningful interaction.
My opinion: I don’t have much inclination to favor this couple, but I guess that it’s not out of the ballpark or anything. Sabin's good-humored, decent and fun, and well, not a flirt.

Other: no real interaction, really. Terra’s only “truly meaningful” interactions were really with Locke and Leo.

Well, and that was a bit long. I’ll shut up now and let others talk.

I voted for the kids, but I think Edgar would've been the best match for her. =)

No doubt she could have him going wub.gif in no time if she tried... wink.gif

When Terra was going in circles about the idea of love, it looked like she was under the idea "love" only applies to a person to have sweaty moments with, and it sort of looked like Leo's plans to talk with her later would somehow involve teaching her that. Leo never got that chance to say anything, but Terra learned love isn't the same as romance from her time with the kids.

Hey, what about Gau? I mean, I know he's five years younger than her, but maybe when they are both older ...

But during the scope of the game, I'm not sure Terra would have allowed herself to end up with anyone besides the children.

He does flirt with Celes, one their way up the Narshe mountains after the three scenarios. Course, she tells him off right away and he stops trying after that. smile.gif

Personally I can't really picture Terra with anyone. Like DP said, she sorta got the wrong impression of love from the beginning - that it only comes from intimate relationships. I think once she ended up in Mobliz she eventually realized she was wrong and didn't need to experience love anymore than the kind she had for those kids.

Otherwise, Leo. Just 'cause. tongue.gif

But on a less male front, I don't really think she'd go well with any either. Poor girl.

I can't see it being Sabin anyway. If you ask me, the game implies at various points in the game that Sabin is homosexual.

It would have been Locke; her resemblance to Rachel, being saved, etcetera is the ultimate cliche set-up. But hey, Celes kicked in and ruined that party.

Leo shares her angst about perhaps never finding love, but that usually just leads to heavy drinking rather then an intimite relationship eh.gif

Goodness me... such a simple question, and yet, it raises so, so many issues...

In a technical sense of voting for Gau, you can always vote "other" above. But this requires a longer reply, which I may write up later. (Since you raised a good point about the future age difference).

Fascinating, Djibriel. Care to elaborate? I find that I am a very shallow and/or naive reader in such respects.

Wait, I know! It's the sleeveless shirt, isn't it?! And travelling with Shadow, and being fascinated with Leo, and being the twin of a flirt, and twins are always opposites... hmm... I wonder if I answered my own question. (laughs)

Hey, a relationship based on heavy drinking is as good as any. ^_-

Locke and Celes just worked out. Locke and Terra just didn't get anywhere. Locke found her attractive, no doubt, but she never felt the same way about him. (Recalls a scene in high school of <Glenn> You know what, I like you. <Meredith> I don't feel the same way about you, though.)

Terra might like Edgar if he stopped flirting. But then again, that's probably not happening anytime soon.

Sabin never seemed interested in a romantic relationship.

Shadow has 'killed all his emotions'; it is unlikely that he will soon revive any of them, especially that of romance.

Setzer was interested in Celes, but has never shown interest in Terra.

I voted 'don't care', because I honestly don't really care, but if I were pressed for a response, I'd say: no one. She doesn't seem like a person who would really care enough about a romantic relationship to have one.

Edit
Oh yeah, and I'm not sure where people get the idea that Terra's interested in Leo. I never felt any hint of that. Also, Sabin is not homosexual; while that may have been a joke, in general, people, please don't assume people are homosexual just because they are not interested in a relationship with a person of the opposite gender.

I think people are picking the Terra/Celes option because they like the idea of lesbians.

Hey, I've got a Y chromosome, and I like lesbians too, but I think we should take this poll a little more seriously than that.

Celes. No doubt there. See the Sabin thread. smile.gif

Seriously, however, I think it's more about the children than anyone in particular. Square only tied up serious intimate relationships with Locke/Rachelle/Celes, Cyan/Ellayne (Elenor? Forgot her name,) and Setzer/Daryll. There was also the Father/Daughter kind of relationship Relm and Strago had (I know he's not her father, but he serves that purpose since her father abandonned her to fight evil and crime and stuff) closely tying in with the Sabin/Edgar brotherly love (...No, not literally... ahem.) Finally, there's the little brother/big brother kind of caring relationship between Sabin and Gau.

So where does Terra fit in?

Terra is a frightened, vulnerable girl who has been used by people all of her life. What she's experiencing throughout the game is the same thing most teenagers experience through highschool: what is love? At first she turns to Locke and uses him as a sort of emotional safety blanket. This is not love. She later turns to Leo, who seems to understand her gripes with love (reminds me of the whole "Oh, I'll never find love, boohoo" thing most people go through, really.) They associate, but Leo dies so, so much for that. Then the world ends. Because, y'know, life can't get any more convinient for our troubled, vulnerable Terra.

Terra eventually finds people who depend on her, both for survival and for emotional safety. People who need her physically as much as emotionally. In time, she comes to understand what this is: love. Not the intimate kind, but the emotional kind. These people are the children of Mobliz, who, even when she transforms into an Esper (monster!), still believe and trust her.

Is Terra doomed to being single for the rest of her life? Hell no. Who's to say she hasn't already found someone in the WoR? The game doesn't expand on things such as this, after all. The only reason we know Cyan has a family is because they die during the course of the game. Gau's father is a single cutscene, seemingly thrown in for the sake of comical relief (for the most part.) Terra could easily end up with someone eventually, though wether it's through the course of the game or not, this isn't revealed.

Plot wise, it made the most sense, to me atleast, for her to end up with the kiddies. I personally feel a relationship with another main character wouldn't work, though I'm too tired to fully explain why. Though Leo is a possibility, their relationship was more about teaching of love than sharing it. Plus, he's, y'know,

dead.

It would've been good to see her end up with the Chancellor of Figaro, though.

Silverlance explained something I thought of-- this poll misses a category- "future person who is NOT someone from the game". For people who think that Terra was, say, about the children, but did not match well with anyone else from the game, and yet still think she has a future with someone.

I threw in Terra/Celes as a joke, but hey, I do know that some people prefer it that way. I may diagree with the reasons, but they should have a voice. At least Celes is Terra's age, unlike Cyan and Gau (which is why they're under the 'other' category).

I always liked the idea of her ending up with Edgar. I think Edgar's flirtations are not to be taken seriously, and it seems that he is attracted to Terra and cares about her based on the Figaro scene and the Chocobo escape scene shortly thereafter.

I know it's not much to go on, and of course the game does nothing to develop the relationship beyond that, but when I first played the game my immediate impression was that Terra and Edgar should be together. She finds love with the kids, but love between mother and children (foster or biological) is different than the intimate love shared between a man and a women. I can't say that with certainty, as I'm not and never will be a mother, but it's an impression I have that I think is true.

Anyway, It seemed like it would have been nice for her to have a genuine love interest, and for Edgar to show that despite his womanizing facade he is capable of settling down when he finds the right person. It would make a good fanfiction. smile.gif

Well i'd have to say..... MOG!...just kidding i'd say Edgar. i mean who else is there? locke has celes. shadow has no more emotion. leo is out of the qestion. sabin doesn't care. cyan had a wife. setzer i think his love for daryl prevents him. gau is well... not of age. gogo we don't know gogo's gender. wich leaves us with Edgar! him or no one.

Anyway, I've always been sorta neutral on the Terra question. If anything, I've a slight bias toward the two royals, but neither one in particular. My objection to HaE comes not from Terra's side of the argument; after all, I am The Celestial. biggrin.gif

I dont know, this is kind of hard to call. In one corner we have Leo, who would have the best chance in my mind, were he not dead. Terra seemed to have this special bond with Leo which she could not have with others. If he were still alive I would vote for him.

In the next corner, we have Locke. He seems like a caring type who would protect her because of the unfortunate accident that befell his previous love. But alas Locke would fall in love with Celes so them having a relationship is doubtful.

In the 3rd corner we have Edgar, the flirtatious King of Figaro. On his inside he is a very caring person and would protect her and stop all that would do her harm. and hey, who wouldnt want to be a Queen.

And finally we have Celes. This type of thing is never a bad thing, am i right. (Sorry if that sounds sexist in any way, dont hurt me). sad.gif

All in all I vote for General Leo.

And so my opinion is stated and so shall it remain.

I voted 'other'.

Am I the only one who thinks that Cyan might be a good match (after the latter is done mourning his family, ofcourse)?

Though, maybe they differ too much in age.

My second choice would be Sabin, my third, Edgar.

Terra was far too screwed up inside to find interest in any man. There was a flicker of something between her and Leo, but it wouldn't have lasted. It's only natural she ends up with children. She herself is trying to recapture her lost childhood.

Think Michael Jackson. Yeah. It's like that.

Exactly the reason why I don't like Terra/Gau suggestions. I heard such observations made about Terra before, and my guess is that the people who made them hate the character.

I also have to say that I disagree with this observation for other reasons. Celes was also screwed-up, and raised by the Empire, but she had a full romance going with Locke.

Some people think that Terra acquired the Slave Crown during childhood. I don't know the answer to that, but I think that it's not true. Her sprite during the slave crown flashback was a fully grown up one, as far as I could tell.

I'm guessing that, unlike Celes, she actually resisted the idea of invading the towns around the Empire. Hence, Kefka suggested the slave crown. Since the Empire only began the invasion not too long before the story of FF6, she couldn't have had the slave crown for long.

Terra never struck me as wierd and screwed-up, just confused. She took care of the children because they were in a position to need her, not because she wanted children around her. Once she got used to the idea of being a mother and receiving the gratefulness and love of the children despite her background, it healed a part of her. Not because they were children and she was trying to recapture her childhood, but because they accepted her. There's a difference.

(Hopes that she will never have to repeat that argument again).

I actually like the idea of Celes and Terra getting together. They were both in the Empire and have some common background, and I think they could make a good relationship.

About the slave crown, I don't think they kept it on her constantly. They probably took it off of her from time to time to let her mind rest, or to make repairs on it.

To be honest i was going to choose terre/ celes. and it wasnt for a reason that mabeya lot of people would pick it. Their personalities are similiar. It was the first thing that came to my mind. but i ended up chooseing terra/locke. Locke is the first one that finds her and he vows to protect her. They also seem like a good couple. So i picked locke.

Locke... he seemed to be the only male who joined Terra the most in the WOB. Like for example, after Narshe in the beginning, before going to Albrook.. and so on..

I think Locke and Terra would really make up a great couple.. Celes seems rather just "friend" to Locke.. Oh God, I love that part where Locke protects Terra from the Narshe guards.. And his theme song rocked..

Well, I voted for the kids, because they were the ones that first awoke the feeling of love in her. Some people are just not sexual beings. Maybe Terra is like that. Oh, she's a nun, who runs an orphanage! Sister Act 3: How Terra Got Her Groove Back.
