I began my final fantasy VI hack several months ago, but i am now running short on ideas. I am looking for any suggestions anybody may have for basically any subject in the game: new characters, spells, items, text, enemies, etc. Ive changed a good number of spells and equipment already and added new characters (i replaced the imp with a penguin, and changed the imp equipment similarly, but now its more god-like and harder to come across). Please let me know if u have any ideas for the hack. Thanks in advance!
P.S. Dont leave ideas for swdtech, cus its all finished. Maybe a new blitz or two though....lemme know if u want to see any screenshots. -------------------- Is PJ |

Locke's woman is Rachel, correct? Im not sure if Rachel has graphics for walking and i know she doesnt have ne for battles, so i wud need to create those, but i suppose it is a possibility. One idea i recently had was making the ghost a permanent character and giving him the possess ability like the ones on the phantom train. Let me know what u think.

Possess kills the caster, always. Worse, you'll note that the character is also gone from the menu screen. Once somebody uses Possess, they're gone forever. Also, Possess would be cheating quite a lot, since it bypasses death protection. You'd kill the invincible Guardian in one hit.
Hint: Way back, I was doing the same thing as you, 'hacking' with the FF3ME (if I may be so bold to guess that). I quit. Partly to devote myself to more interesting projects, but also because there were already quite a few HardType versions of the game. I asked myself the question "Do I have something new to donate?" The answer was, in my case, no. So whatever you do, make sure that it's something new. But, of course, go right ahead if you think you do. Especially custom monsters are appreciated, en general. Maybe even want to release the best as seperate patches. -------------------- |

Shortly after i posted that entry and shut down my computer, i thought of a way to get around the fact that possess eliminates the character permanently. I could create a new spell that acts similarly to the ability possess. This spell would still include the floating animation and would still kill the opponant and sacrifice the caster, but with this new spell, it would have a lower success rate and death protection cud easily be factored in. Since i was considering making the ghost in place of sabin, i could replace the blitz spiraler with bum rush, and then add possess as the final blitz, similar to what i did with the swdtechs.

You seem to be quite capable in changing just about anything you want. Can you edit the actions of the character sprites during dialogue? I was thinking today that it would be nice to see some new scenes and character actions. The biggest issue here would be giving the edited dialogue an authentic feel. We could get a bunch of people together to act out certain FFVI characters and review each others' work. A team effort would be the best way to go about this because different people have different interpretations as to what the characters should be like.
Another thing you could do is use the patch that I've seen around (don't know where at the moment) that moves all the enemy battle script to the end of the rom, which would give you a lot more bytes for adding new script. You could create a ton of enemies with great AI, and with your abilities Caesar probably with custom in-battle dialogue. -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! Believe it or not, I was just recently considering revising quite a few enemies, possibly bringing back bosses from other final fantasy games, such as Phase from FFIV (the evil face-like thing in the lunar subterrain), and the CPU from FFIV, and maybe even Warmech from FFI. I do have that patch you are talking about, but I haven't used it yet since i like to mentally plan what im going to change before i do it.
I haven't worked with battle dialogue or battle events yet, although i know how it works and im sure very impressive scenes cud be made by working with it. If you think of a specific example of a situation in which i cud use this and the dialogue to go along with it, i90east, ill try to make it happen in my hack. ![]() Quick update on the ghost: Sabin has been replaced and possess is now the 7th blitz, in place of the rarely-used spiraler. With this verison of possess, the user only dies and can be revived in the same battle, and an enemy lacking instant death protection goes with him. Wow, you really seem like you have the ability to edit just about anything. Awesome.
Can you change stuff like sprites for Edgar's Tools? If so, then I recommend exchanging a little-used Tool (Bio or Noise Blaster) with something crazy, like an automatic battle axe, or a spear machine. Yes, a Flamethrower'd be good.
Or, even better still, change all his Tools for Guns. Like, pistols to start out with, then shotguns, then chainguns, flamethrowers, rocket launchers, etc. Then the best one could be this rockin' humungous laser gun with a very cool animatic. Good luck with the Flamethrower. I tried to assemble a hex sentence which would lead to a believeable Flamethrower, but I failed miserably. I don't think that FF VI has the graphics to pull it off. But how about:
81 01 8D 01 91 01 38 00 00 7B 10 FF FF 18 This would become a red Aero with Wavecannon/Sun Flare its explosions instead of tornados. I haven't really messed with the last four values, but you might want to change those too for a better sound effect (out of the clear, I don't know how exactly it works). Right now, it's Aero's values. I'd do it myself if only I had access. Damn you, reality! P.S.: Sour Mouth/Bio Blast springs to mind, but that can't be done. You could possibly incorporate other FF characters as children, voices [like say from the dead or the future], alternate evil vilains, etc. It could make some... interesting conversations.

Ahh yes i was having difficulties myself with the graphics for the flamethrower....i forgot that emission is a blue magic spell in FFV and not VI.
![]() Wish_Hacker, i use thingy32 for my text editing. Simple yet effective program. Btw, isnt Tidus a FFX character? Ive never played the game myself, but i thought i remembered him being in FFX...regardless, sabin is a ghost now, but if you still want to make tidus for me ill see where i can fit him in. Better yet, if you cud make a gilgamesh sprite (most likely using palette 3), that would be great, since he cud easily fit into the context of my game. Ive never really thought of that before, Zariteth...youre right, it definitely would make some interesting conversations. For the alternate evil villain, do u suggest me doing sumthing like...killing kefka off early, and then having golbez or sumbody take over, or having kefka join the team to fight against the new villain? It's pretty much the same as spell graphics. It's pretty easy to swap weapon graphics around: you can make the Air Lancet look like the Illumina and vice versa. It is, however, a great deal harder to design a weapon and bring it in the game. Although I'm not sure, I'm guessing that weapon graphics are compressed (I sure as hell never saw them so far). Also, it might be possible to change palettes behind them, but I wouldn't know how at this time.
Spell graphics are done in hex. Visit This site, maintained by Mnrogar, for all your graphic needs. There is only room for 255 items. There can be no more. (# 256 is 'Empty'). Creating one items always leads to the destruction of another. -------------------- |

Maybe something cracks in Kefka, and he is split into two. Then the good side goes with the team and the bad side continues his evil plot with say... Cloud's father or something [don't know if Cloud's dad was that evil... but hey I had to say someone.].

Quick update: I finished two tools: a rocket luancher, and a satellite laser (i cudnt help myself). The launcher is simply the TekMissile, but with lower hit rate and an added bonus of confusion, and the satellite beam is the plasma animation, but with a light blue version of the grav bomb explosion thrown in...looks awesome. Flamethrower is still in progress, as is the warmech boss.

How 'bout this- when KEfka messes up the statues, Terra's brain goes haywire. SHe absorbs their power, as well as Kefka;s insanity. You could pull this off, I bet. Have him be in the place with the kids, having a sort of 'I must repent' story. WHen you get him on your team, make his special ability Summon. Random espers! =

I could definitely make the GravCannon...fire 3 pellet but with the grav bomb palette, and then a simple palette change in the ultima explosion. im not sure if i cud make obliterator though...or the kefka thing...ill get back to u

The Kefka thing could probably be done in the programs downloadable at CoN, so I don't see what's the problem there.
Summon, the fabled dummied command of FF VI, does not summon a random esper. It summons the equipped Esper and makes it available over and over again instead of just once. Note that Summon has a targetting bug in it, causing all offensive Espers to auto-abort upon usage. There's a bug fix patch available at RPGLegion.com Obliterator will need custom coding. I, for one, sure as hell couldn't pull it off. Edit: What if you would weaken the Flamethrower attack a little, but put in the Launcher effect? I'm sure you're familiar with it. It actually came out better than expected, and this makes it fit the role of a "tool" more than just a magic spell since the red demi is coming straight from edgar to the enemy, and not just appearing at the enemy like it wud if i used the fire 1 graphic or sumthing. Some very creative moves there, buddy. Could you give me the hex sentence of these moves? I'd like to see them in action (although I could probably come pretty close by guessing).
Also, here's some screenshots of the only other custom moves I've seen so far. Besides these of course. They're mine. Quote I tried giving the launcher effect to the flamethrower, but when i used it, the ice 1 graphics appeared... And this...just doesn't make any sense at all to me. The only time I had the Launcher effect messing with something was Quadra Slam, which is rather logical if you think about it. From mondays to fridays, I live in the city my university is located; in the weekends, I'm at my parent's house where I *do* have a computer and thus have access.
