i have heard people pronounce the first CH like Chocolate and ive heard it pronounced as in cocoa. So before they said chocobo in ffx, how did you pronounce it?

I always pronounced it cho-ko-bo, with long Os.

Do you ever say anything that isn't about chocobos? I used to pronounce it the wrong way until we started CoNchat and it came up in there one day. I forget how I used to pronounce it.

I say it with a hard O (I guess that's what it's called, I forget my english). Anyway it sounds like the actual letter O being pronounced.

Ch-O-c-O-b-O.

Even if I'm deemed "wrong" I will continue to pronounce it this way. There's no way I'm changing it.

I still do pronounce it like chocolate. It feels too American to have the long first O, to me, even though it's rather irrational.

I pronounce it Sho-ko-bo. French "CH" is like english "SH". And I pronounce the O like the Ancient said (hard O).

considering that the game is a j-language game, originally, even without the ffx pronunciation, we know that tyokobo is pronounced with 3 long o sounds and an unvoiced "ch" (that is, no dyocobo or "jocobo"). thus cho, like the korean name, ko, like short for courtney, and bo, like the staff. chocobo.

even before i knew this was the right pronunciation, i prounouced it like the because that's how my grandfather pronounced it.

I always pronounced as they do in FFX. Cho-ko-bo, with all long o's.

I've pronounced it like cocoa-bo ever since I've first seen the word. Some o" my friends keep trying to conv rt me to the choke-o-bo pronunc(ation, especially when FF10 cam$ out. I almost gave in, but now after seeing that a lot of other people pronounce it my way, I'll hold the line til the end!!

I pronouce it, and always have, "choke-uh-bo". If you say it with the middle syllable as a long O as well, it just doesn't flow right. You have to pause to say it. In regular fast speaking (for most americans anyways), it reverts to "cho-kuh-bo", which is basically the same way I say it anyways. To me, it sounds just like this in FFX. By the way "kuh" is meant to be pronounced like "duh". I would say "kah", but it looks like it could be intrepreted to sound like cha cha or baaa like a sheep.

I've always pronounced it with "long" Os.

Another question to ask would involve the stress pattern. I put stress on the first syllable, but my mother says the same vowels I do and stresses the penultimate.

The wondeful, perfect, "real", Japanese pronounciation doesn't really have an impact. It's always interesting to know what it is, but I've always felt that it was terribly pretentious to go around saying things in a pseudo-foreign accent just to sound "correct." (Meh-hee-koh, anyone?) If you really wanted to be accurate, the Japanese "cho" is phonetically distinct from the sound we use in American English; it's similar, but with a large degree of palatalisation (kind of like adding a y sound after the consonant, which wouldn't be surprising to anyone who knew that the way to write "cho" is appending "yo" to the character for "chi"; think of the British pronounciation of "tune" or "Tuesday" for a palatalised t). We'd be talking about this just as much as we'd be talking about the vowel quality or the stress pattern if palatalisation were distinctive in English. There's nothing wrong with "Americanising" a word that's intended for use in American English. tongue.gif
