Okay, readers, let's be honest. The majority of us have played Final Fantasy IV. A decent number of us have played it on more than one system. What with the SNES version, PSX, GBA, DS and Wii, that's five different ways to play! I know what you're thinking right now. "Only five? That's pathetic! Final Fantasy I has been released on at least SIX different platforms!" And you would be correct. Square-Enix, apparently realising this, have decided to bring four up to six. By that I mean, bring Final Fantasy IV up to six platforms, and not.... you know what, never mind.
So, my friends, here's the deal. Final Fantasy IV is coming to a PSP near you. HUZZAH! It'll be coming with Super-Turbo-HD graphics, in the same vein as the Final Fantasy I and II remakes from a few years ago and NOT the 3D graphics from the DS remake. No specific release date as of yet, only "Next Spring". That's quite close. But that's not all. Remember the sequel to Final Fantasy IV, titled "The After Years"? It was originally released on mobile phones, and then released in installments on the Wii Shop Channel. This sequel will come included in the game with the same graphical enhancements. Booya. It is not clear yet whether the sequel includes all of the episodes with it, but one assumes that that would be the only way to go. Some people might sigh, seeing this game remade for the forty-fifth time (see linked article), but 4 is one of the games that I never really get bored of. Now I'm going to have to find one of my copies of Final Fantasy IV and play it again. Squee. Source: Kotaku |

I'm actually super, super excited for this. I don't have a Wii and probably will never have one, so I figured I'd never get to play After Years. But I DO have a PSP, by golly. And I WILL play this there. So. Much. Squee.

!! Awesome! I've played it on GBA, but I no longer have the copy, and my DS version is pirate (;_;) so this will be awesome. And I never bothered to by the after years to the Wii, so... yay!

Since I don't have a DS, I've only played a mere FOUR versions of the same game, so this one will clearly be necessary.

Wow, the PSP is racking up a lineup of great games, and is starting to rival the DS in terms of how much I might like it.
Edit: ...okay, said lineup consists of FFT The Lion Wars, Castlevania Drac X Chronicles, and this. I would have to agree. Why have some of the games on 6 different systems and have one (FF3) only on one? I would really like to see a FF3 on a console based system.

With exception to the DS version of which is not that true to the original of which I believe had mor than three monsters to battles and different characters. In fact a Final Fantasy 3 had a sequel Manga according to a wiki page I found and the Onion Knights had names and none of the names matched the DS version which sucks!!! Now dont get me wrong. I wasnt saying I hated IV. I was merely saying that they should "spread the love" so to speak. I think its narrow minded to keep re-releasing some games and almost totally ignoring others. There are so many different "Final fantasy" titles out there. Why just keep picking the same couple (1, 4, 6, spinoffs of 7) to rework?

Quote Final Fantasy IV gets more treatment while Final Fantasy 5-6 gets ignored ? Thumbs down. Final Fantasy IV is cool and all, but Final Fantasy 7 fans have been waiting for their remake for ages and FF6 fans have been waiting for something, so really this is unfair on the Final Fantasies. My thoughts exactly. While FF4 is one of my favorite games of the series, why does it get remade yet again while other games are consistently passed over? Okay, I know it all comes down to money, but c'mon. Where's the love for 5, 6 & 7? If they released those on PSP (or did full-on PS3 remakes with the latest generation graphics, sound, etc.), I'd buy them in a heartbeat, and I'm sure I'm not the only fan who would. That said, I probably will get the PSP remake of 4 when it comes out, since it's going to include The After Years in its bonus content. I've always wanted to check out The After Years, but I don't have a Wii, so it does have that going for it. But really, that's about the only selling point for me on this latest remake. |

If this has the Advance content without glitches, relatively little slowdown, AND all this After Years business... then I might have to buy my FIFTH copy of Final Fantasy IV. I have played this game more times than any other FF game. This is getting embarrassing....

I have to agree with the article. It was a good game, but this is getting tiresome. I'd like to see a FFVI remake or sequel if anything, though I'm sure they would ruin it if they did a sequel so nevermind that. Maybe they will at least make the paladin form of Cecil look decently cool this time. When I saw him after his transformation the first time I played it I facepalmed. Of course one thing that always bothered me is how at the beginning of the game when he's with the Red Wings and they get attacked by monsters Cecil uses Firebomb and then Lit-bolt to wipe them out with ease. Where did that power go when you got control of him? And I always wished Kain was more involved in the game, but oh well.

They're items.
If you play FFII (US), you can steal a Firebomb from a Red Dragon at the end of the game. The Lit-bolt isn't available unless you're playing another version. Perhaps they were just magic attack items that were kept aboard the ship for...well, reasons such as those. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I think the error here is marketing: If this were billed as The After Years coming to PSP with the original as a bonus, would it be more palatable?
As it is, though, we once again see Square-Enix flogging a dead horse despite the fact that fans, to date, have expressed interest in remakes of FF6, FF7, Chrono Trigger, continuations of the Chrono series, etc... Yet all we get is a new MMO, a divisive 13th entry in the series, more Kingdom Hearts and FF7 spin-offs than there are people in Nebraska, and terrible attempts at new IPs that are so lacklustre I don't think we even heard of half of them. If I had a PSP I'd be interested, but I don't, so I won't. Handhelds on the whole hold little appeal for me and the Nintendo DS I have wouldn't have been worth it if I were to buy it today. If it was on PSN for download and playing on PS3, maybe. If it was on DS, maybe. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

I just replayed FFIV last week, and hadn't seen this news until just now, so I sort of feel like my opinion on the subject might be different than it was. Having so recently just replayed FFIV, (the PS1 version) I realized how AWESOME the mechanics of that game are. The game is perfectly balanced all the way through so that if you fight every random encounter, you'll only have a very rudimentary amount of grinding at a few points. I also noticed how amazingly hard the combat system is with it's un-repeated 5 character model. All the monsters have ridiculous speed past a certain point and most of the bosses are stacked to wallop you basically if you don't come at them just so (see: Wyvern, CPU, Bahamut, Asura, etc).
Having re-visited and looked at FFIV with a more critical mindset, (a game I've been able to play by instinct for years after starting to play it when it came out- before I could read when I was 4,) I've really come to appreciate the depth of the gameplay and it's position as a link in the evolution of the series as a whole- that is, sort of halfway between the 8 bit shallowness which was slowly falling away with III, and the colorful character driven masterpieces of the later years- if not quite all the way in V, then DEFINITELY in VI. Actually, in a certain light, V might almost be seen as a mis-step or devolution in the character development trend from simple to complex the series has undertook. At the same time, I do feel, as far as it goes, that with so many other games in the series needing a desperate remake, that this is somewhat un-warranted. Does anyone know if it'll be like the GBA version where the party at the end is changeable? I replayed Final Fantasy 4 for the second time a few weeks ago, and all I have to say is...wow. FF4 ranks as my second least favorite FF game, only above FF1. There are definitely certain aspects I liked of the game (characters, summons, classes) but I've always felt like it was one of the weakest games.
One reason FF4 bores me is because once you play through it (keep in mind I've only played the SNES and PS versions) it has NO replay value. You can't replay through it and say "okay, I'm going to do things differently this time." You're always stuck with the same five characters, the same magic, and the same summons. FF4 definitely isn't a bad game, but why so many remakes? Why is this game praised more than the fan favorites (FF6 and FF7)? I'd love to see a remake of either of those games, but so far it hasn't happened. SE continues to disappoint.... |

FF4 is good but kind of overrated. I really don't get why Square-Enix feel the need to remake it so much compared to FF5, which has only been released in the west twice.
Oh well. At least this looks prettier than the DS version, and The After Years is a nice bonus. |
