Terra in Chair

Just curious since it appears in a variety of artwork associated with FFVI.

Let me know if you figure it out.

huh.gif Hmm... I never saw anything like that in the game and it's only near her in the concept art so...

You see Terra's hair isn't really green, it's blonde you see. The reason why its green is because her magical energy makes it glow that infamous greenish tinge, kinda like it's covered in phosphorus. Since Ghestal has a thing for blondes... Because Ghestahl realized just how much raw potential for power Terra had, he had Cid make that little device to subdue her magical capabilities up until the point in time where her will was subdued. It's not with her at the start of the game because the Slave Crown obsoleted it and it'd only interfere with her ability to perform her job.

Either that or it's a golden snitch that had the plating worn off after being used in so many of Terra's games.

Seriously though? I dunno. It really is on the cover of the OST. I'm staring at it right now. I'd guess it's some sorta japanese good luck charm or something, since it has no game significance and ended up reused anyway. Either that or a referencing one of the artist'ss earlier works.

The most likely thing though is that it's just concept art fodder that got tossed out, likely due to sprite limitations or some such. I'm looking at the back of the insert booklet and I see some little red moogle looking thing with yellow puffs of fur and orange bat-wing ears. Never saw that in the game too. It's kinda cute cute really.

Edit
Oh! blush.gif Outside the context of both the original game and this forum specifically, I talk about fanart way more often than concept art, so I guess I kinda let down my guard and got the terms confused. Fixed and thanks BFM.

Mostly pointless text.

It's not fanart, it's clearly official. And it's in all of Amano's renditions, which is weird.

I thought it might be the slave crown, but it's in a staff-like form in one of them, and that just doesn't make sense. I'd guess that it's a mobile-magitek observation device, that Ghestal/Kefka used to monitor Terra while she was under the influence of the slave crown.

Uh, different tastes in humor aside, what portion of my post implies it has anything to do with fan-art? pinch.gif I thought I was confirming the opposite by mentioning the OST...? Also, the Slave Crown kinda appears in game for a split second when that guy takes it off of you and it's very clearly a wearable ringlet as opposed to a spherical floaty thing, so it can't be that.

Lol, it does kinda look like that. Perhaps my little joke theory wasn't that far off from the truth then, particularly since I hear most Amano females are conceived as blondes AirForce, who launched the specks, was an Empire controlled boss if I recall correctly... But if that's really what it's supposed to be, where are the little thingies off to the side? I suppose the sphere itself would barely be registered in the sprite art so perhaps they had to be omitted? <Tonepoet shrugs>

Probably just unrelated Amano art weirdness. It's official, but that doesn't mean it has to mean something in the context of the narrative.

That's what I was going to say. Those were probably concept art, before the game was even made. Look at these pictures:

Terra with blonde hair, and

Celes with a different outfit.

Think of the dot as artistic license.

Neal wins.

In any case, the dot is probably some sort of artist signature.

I actually can see it being a speck.

I mean, if the empire was controlling her, and were uncertain of their slave crown or the stability of Terra in general, wouldn't it make sense to have a speck hovering around her to absorb magic, just in case?

In terms of artwork it can't be seen in anything other than things related to Magitek Armour. If, that is, you take the first one where Terra is sitting in a chair to be the chair of the Magitek Armour and the two levers to her right and left are to maneuver it.

I'm going to go with that it represents the artists signature because all of the other explanations aren't that good. I don't think it could be a spec because those were all one color and didn't have wings while this has wings and is black and white in a yin and yang type fashion.

I believe that because it's only associated with Magitek Armour that it has something to do with targeting... maybe of Terra's missiles.

Perhaps its the "Movers" from Kefka's towers; maybe they where a device that vector soilders used for some defence or what have you. I know the "movers" dont have the wings, but it's what I think.

I'm probably wrong here ('cause like, why the heck would this be places on the Original Sound Version thing) but it could be Safety Bit. I was playing the game the other day and it describes itself as a floating speck kind of thing, I thought maybe the artist would more likely portray her with the relic?

Again, I'm probably wrong but just a consideration. The thing that I think it's more likely to be is the signature thing, seems like a cool little logo that might mean something to him smile.gif.

Yeah, I always figured it was just one of Amano's zany things he creates in his artwork but have no relevance to the game. If you look at the artwork to previous final fantasy's, you will see that there are similar magical flying things that can't really be properly explained or described. It is weird though how the same floating ball appears in numerous drawings (and their association with Terra).

I've been playing so much pkmn soul silver that when I looked at that ball, I thought: "It's a pokeball for catching espers"

now seriously, I think it's just a signature, like some of ou guys said.

Btw, the floating thing also appears on the Grand Finale album artwork.

Look at the bottom center, it should be pretty noticeable.

It's a Super Ball: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:FF...all_Artwork.jpg

Thought it would be something cooler... Anywho, four years later and it's solved.

If you check the page that image is used on, there's apparently a Super Ball sprite that looks similar.

Ehhhhhhhhh, I think "similar" might be a bit of a reach if someone wasn't already making the connection there. But, hey, I don't have a better idea.
