Well, there was definitely some interesting stuff from Nintendo this year. Not that interesting is good, but we'll get to that.
Starting where they did, the Wii MotionPlus looks... familiar. Real control over actions in the virtual world? Precision through movement? Wow, this sounds like... huh, I don't know, maybe what they originally promised the Wii Remote would be? The features shown seem no different to what we already have and what has already been used. But this is a sceptic point of view - who knows, maybe it will be revolutionary different to existing products. Then there is the Wii Fit Plus! and the Wii Vitality Sensor. The former I can accept is popular, and now there'll be a lot more to use it for. And for those who saw the section on the latter - I know it's meant to be a sneak peek, but seriously, what do I now know about it? I wasn't quite sure if it was just a novelty add-on, not unlike the wiimote was seen to be in the first place. Anyway, onwards. New Super Mario Brothers Wii. The DS version was well received, and from what I saw of the Wii version, co-op Mario looks very playable and enjoyable. Of the two Marios announced, this is the one i'd rather pick up. Yes, of the two. Super Mario Galaxy 2 brings the same feel of the original Super Mario Galaxy to a... brand... new... well, my stream cut off during the trailer of it, but it looks pretty similar to the first one. Awesome music, though. If you're a fan of one, I don't suppose you could go wrong with two. Let's see, what else? Kingdom Hearts 358/2 looks like another standard game in the series, but without having played any of them, I wouldn't really know. Final Fantasy: Crystal Bearers has awful voice acting, but again, standard spinoff sequel something. I'll probably pass on both of these titles. But oh my GOD I am SO excited for the Women's Murder Club game! I heart James Patterson and now I totally get to play the game of the books! Oh, and my heart melted at the sight of Style Savvy! Runway Models. I am so excited I literally can't put it into words!* And then there were some other games that didn't catch my eye, Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, C.O.P The Recruit, Golden Sun DS, Mario vs Donkey Kong 3, Wario Ware (I saw a brief glimpse of a Star Fox SNES level in it, but unfortunately not the same game). Features such as facebook on the DSi were unveiled - facebook are getting everything compatible with them, aren't they? There was also a brief mention of Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, a sequel to Phantom Hourglass with trains instead of ships. Announcements on The Conduit, a Sega developed game, a new rail-shooter Resident Evil from Capcom, and Dead Space: Extraction, from EA - all for the Wii. And then the final game was shown. Words do not explain how awesome it looked. Metroid: Other M (Sadly lacking a decent title, but the action made up for it). I can't think of what else to say regarding this. But if you do have a Wii, the preview make it look like that this will be one game you probably shouldn't miss. *When I said "so excited," the "excited" was in massive sarcasm quotes. P.S. Josh: No way i'm doing this for Sony. |

I think I posted a topic with nearly the same title while you were writing yours, FBM.
Quote Super Mario Galaxy 2 (can play with Yoshi) Wii Motion Plus (some new Wiimote add-on) - played with Wii Sports Resort (skydiving, samurai swords, archery, more of the same old) Wii Fit Plus WarioWare DIY (you can design your own minigames) Metroid: Other M (developed by Team NINJA) Wii Pulse (a Wiimote add-on that can monitor your pulse) Women's Murder Club: Games of Passion (interactive novel by James Patterson -- imagine Phoenix Wright without the comedy or characters) Golden Sun DS (finally, one of the internet's whiniest subfandoms can shut up) Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks -------------------- |

They seemed to deliver this year. Galaxy looks awesome, can't wait for that. Never played Metroid before, but I have to try Other M.
I missed the Legend of Zelda part of the press conference. Does that look good? -------------------- |

I missed Zelda and SMG2 entirely because I missed the first hour of the presser to a stupid meeting, and only had time to watch the first forty-five minutes before Sony came on (I probably could have gone ahead with catching up on Nintendo, it's not like Sony really needed my attention - but that's for another thread).
From what I did see, though, Metroid was really the show-stopper. Wii Motion Plus, while a nice add-on, was in fact the same WM+ we saw at LAST E3, just with more gaming support now. Wii Sports Resort looked good enough, but the skydiving sequence just made me think that Pilotwiings (yes, wiings, duh!) would be an excellent idea in the near future. The WM+ capabilities of this year's EA Sports titles will be a nice change, though, and it kind of makes me want to get a Wii for my Dad this Christmas with Tiger Woods '10. Finally, did anyone else think that Crystal Bearers didn't look very good? The voice acting seemed pretty poor to me. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Metroid is pretty much my favorite game franchise, and conveniently, I've been playing MP3 recently, so that's what really stopped the show from me. I don't think that nintendo was really able to top microsoft this year, but they definitely exceeded my and a lot of other expectations with much more games targeted to their older fanbase.

Mario Galaxy 2 looks sort of like a rehash of Galaxy 1, except bigger. But Metroid looked absolutely awesome. -------------------- |

Ooh, Metroid announcement.
And as for Golden Sun--I liked the first two games, but I'll hesitate to show enthusiasm for the new game until it's well received. There are a lot of franchises that abandoned nice starts and ended up going crappy and becoming forgotten. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Well, Galaxy was the bee's knees, and Miyamoto's comments about its sequel confirm my suspicions: Number 2 is going to be harder and zanier than the first. Its a fab engine that--judging by the appearance of other Wii titles--really pushes the system to its limits. It would have been a shame if they didn't reuse it to bring another pure platformer.
I don't know how I feel about the new Metroid. It looks sort of like Ninja Gaiden starring Samus Aran--not surprising as it's a Team Ninja collaboration, but disappointing nonetheless. I anticipate cheesy CG sequences, poor voice acting, silly NPCs, and bland art direction. Still, I'm not entirely pessimistic. The graphics are technically nice, there are cool throwbacks (like Ridley and Mother Brain), and the combat looks fast and slick. I've always wanted to see how Nintendo could pull off a 3D Metroid in third person, and I thought the Wii Remote/Nunchuk provided a good opportunity to do so: Control Samus's body with the joystick and her gun with the Remote (point and shoot). -------------------- SPEKKIO: "GRRR...That was most embarrassing!" |

Nintendo's E3 conference seemed to be really spectacular to me. Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks really good, as did all of the other Mario games. But what really dissapointed me was that it really seems like that other than Mario and Casual 'flick the wrist and shake the mote games' that Nintendo doesn't really do much anymore. Sure, we have another DS Zelda game and an insanely awesome Metroid Game, but the rest of Conference was a little lackluster. They have a lot of series that haven't even hit the Wii in a new platformer(Such as F-zero and Starfox) but we didn't seem to get those.
Quote Finally, did anyone else think that Crystal Bearers didn't look very good? The voice acting seemed pretty poor to me. From the trailer it looked okay, but the gameplay videos look pretty good. |

Ha ha, I just saw this at Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/02/segway-...s-wii-fit-plus/ Hey, Wii Fit is a neat concept and all, but you have to know you look a bit dorky doing it. Using Wii Fit to ride a Segway will *not* improve that. (Still kinda neat.) -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Quote (Rangers51 @ 3rd June 2009 16:54) dorky Quite an understatement. Using a WiiFit to ride a segway might be the nerdiest thing I have ever heard of. Anyways, I am getting sick of all this hardware their making for games. You have to buy a balance board, after you buy a guitar, bass, and drum set. Don't they know I just blew all my money on the actual game system? Quote (yomama) but the rest of Conference was a little lackluster. They have a lot of series that haven't even hit the Wii in a new platformer(Such as F-zero and Starfox) but we didn't seem to get those. That's why I thought Sony was the better conference. They announced some good titles, but not enough. They need much more than another Mario and Zelda game. This post has been edited by BlitzSage on 3rd June 2009 23:11 -------------------- |
