Ok, so earlier in this decade we've seen Sega crash and burn. Once the smoke arose, 3 companies stood in the midst of this crash. and since then, these three companies have fought for your hearts, and it seems that all three of these teams are all staying neck and neck. With that said, who do you prefer and also more importantly, who do you think will come out of this battle alive? Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony?

my first console was a playstation 1, and growing up with final fantasy viii, crash bandicoot, and spyro secured my place as a sony fanboy. that being said, i own a ps 3, and i absolutely love it. the games, the graphics, and the ease to play make it so much fun to own, while im just not that interested in anything x-box related. that an i have free online tongue.gif

Yeah, but it won't be on top at the end of the decade. Maybe in five years or so. You have to pick the Wii for that. The Wii and the DS are topping the charts right now, and the decade is almost over. On a personal level, I'd pick the 360 bc the quality of its games, but if you're talking about profit, the Wii will top at least till the end of the decade.

It's a tough argument. The Wii and the DS are a lot of fun and more interactive than anything the other companies offer. But they're not meant for serious gamers. The 360 has the best lineup of games. But the PS3 and PSP have the best graphics in their respective classes. I'm a PS-head, have been since PS1. Gotta stay true.

I've always been a Sony guy but I'm at a crossroad right now. I've always loved the PS1 and PS2, but I'm not a huge fan of the PS3. It's good, I just don't seem to like it as much.....probably cuz of the game selection since I'm RPG heavy. I've been thinking about getting a 360 to play games like Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean, Lost Odyssey, etc. Buuuttt.....since I've always been Sony, it's gotta be a tie for me. Never had much experience playing the Wii so I can't hate or praise it.

I'd have to agree with much of what was said there. The thing that's bumped up the Wii and DS so high in sales is the fact that they are so accessible. Furthermore, they do have some good games, though definitely not nearly as many hits as the XBox 360. I don't think the PS3 stands a chance at the moment, as amped as it is. The high price margins and the not-so-exciting game library really hurt them early in development; they're getting up there, but I think it's too little too late.

I've always loved the PS for its great RPGs, but since getting my DS, I've loved it immensely, and the Wii's great for the aforementioned fun games, plus the virtual console which brings up all the hits of the SNES, 64 and NES that many old school gamers truly loved, and that's something that Sony and Microsoft cannot get there hands on, really. True, they have their arcade titles and such, but you can't deny that the cream of the gaming crop really came with the SNES.

But, one also can't deny the near 60% drop in Wii sales over in Japan due to their fad ADD. So, it'll be close, but I still think that Nintendo's really got the winners for this decade, regardless of how pretty and how pumped the XBox library is.

I think it's a little silly to claim allegiance to one company, to buy the most popular system, or to buy the system with the best graphics. What gamers should *always* do is buy systems only when 1) they have the economic ability and sufficient want to do so and 2) when only one system can be bought, buy the one with the most games you want to play.

Over the years, I've owned a NES, a SNES, a PS1, and a PS2. I bought an XBox and a Gamecube for (very) cheap off of a friend a few years after I bought that PS2. I haven't bought a new system yet, since I don't think any of them have enough games to be worth a purchase of over $200.

But that's about all. I think that all three systems have good games, but I'm not interested in buying a new system until I get some more in my pocket. My only opinion is that you should only buy the system that has the most games you want to play. For me, that's probably the PS3.

I like my Playstation and Playstation 2 but I like them mainly for the fact they have all those nice RPG's on them plus they are built pretty good so they last. The Playstation 3 just really does not have a decent RPG library, it is way too expensive, has had way too many SKU's, and from the way it looks over at Playstation's official forums not real reliable. huh.gif

I like my Xbox for the fact that it has Morrowind Game of the Year Edition on it as I'm not much of a PC gamer. Now I currently own an Xbox 360 (trying to sell it right now) and I'm not a fan of it. The Xbox 360 may have some RPG's but it's a poorly built piece of gaming hardware as everyone I know that owns one is on their 2-6 unit myself included. Between the RRoD and E74 error everytime you push the power button you wonder if this is it. Then you have the fact that the Xbox 360 is the only current gen console to have pay to play but yet it's also the only one to shove ads in your face as soon as you turn on the unit. The prices for DLC are on a steady incline while the quality of the content is in question. Cheating online is on the rise with all the lag switchers, bridgers, and rapid fire controllers but M$ is wasting time, money, and resources going after gamerscore cheaters. rolleyes-straight.gif

The Wii is totally different from the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 but many people don't even think of it as current gen since it is not an HD unit. The Wii is just going after a larger audience with it's motion controller and party games. It's been selling well but now it seems the sells are slipping some. I would really like to see the Wii on top this gen though just to show up all the "hardcore" gamers who call the Wii a kiddie system. biggrin.gif

Okay, is this about business, which one we think will perform better, or are we supposed to choose which one we like better?

The first post of the thread suggests both.

And honestly, the winner here is Nintendo. Their market share is crazy, and eventually I think the Wii will surpass the PS2 as the bestselling console of all time. Their recent sales remain stronger than those of both the PS3 and 360 as well. And I don't think I need to talk about the DS. The success of the DS has been pretty overwhelming, with total DS and DSi sales surpassing the sales of the Wii, 360, and PS3 combined.

Sony isn't in as bad sorts as the internet thinks they are, since the PS2 is still selling higher than the 360 or PS3 and the PS3's sales are rising at higher percentages every year than those of the 360 and the PS3 is utterly destroying the 360 in Asia (where the 360 is basically surviving by the skin of its teeth off of Idolmaster and games by Mistwalker). But still, right now Sony's new-generation hardware is in third place, and closing the gap. Their major victories so far have been the adaptation of the blu-ray disc format and the increasing popularity of the PSP, which had the #1 game in Japan last year.

Microsoft, well, they have probably the best developer support. Their only problems are sales slightly stagnating since the first three years of release (worldwide recession?) and a lack of success outside of the United States and parts of Europe. They're in a solid second in this "race" (the internet loves keeping score, right?) and are inching their way into Eastern markets by buying up timed exclusives like Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery (both of which I found horribly disappointing), and Tales of Vesperia (which is very good, but getting a bigger, better PS3 version in less than a year).

Well, in that case, I would say Nintendo is winning the business side, though the others have a chance to overtake in my opinion. I think that is because Nintendo hasn't established a base with the hardcore audience, and that has allowed the others to fill that niche and thus they're staying in the market. But it does have the VC, which is one of their bigggest advantages. Personally, I think that Sony has a chance if they can get more software produced, but I don't know about Microsoft (since it's older).

My personal one is the 360. They have pound-for-pound the best games. I can't speak for the ps3, bc it's too much money. I play 360 more than anything.

Edit
I'm Nintendo biased though, since I've still got a SNES and 64, so I'm pulling for them as my personal choice.

When the most recent console wars began, I went for the Wii as soon as Smash came out. The online functionality of Wii was weak and not user-friendly, and within a few months the hype had died out. My Wii went largely unused for several months before I finally sold it to buy a PS3.

There's no question Wii is pwning the console wars in terms of sales. I still have fun playing Wii occasionally at friends' houses. If I had children, it's probably the most age appropriate console and the one that would be most fun for them (and I think that's what primarily drives the sales). Being an adult pushing 30 with no kids, however, Wii just didn't have enough solid games, hardware specs, or online interaction to sustain my interest. Wii Punch-Out is the first game since Smash I've had any interest in.

XBox 360 is still the best platform for online gaming, but I don't have the time for serious online gaming anymore or the extra money to spend on it. PS3 works for me because I can get more adult games for serious gamers plus decent online capability that is free (though I honestly hardly ever use it). I can casually pick up the big releases, that don't make it onto Wii because the graphics card can't handle it, and I can finally add Blu-Ray movies to my Netflix queue. For somebody in my position, that was the best bang for my buck.

I really love my old systems so I prefer them. To be honest the newest console I have is the ps2.

Nothing beats the snes, nes and ps1 for rpgs in my opinion.

I enjoyed MGS4 and I do like the PS3, but there's no way I would want to spend so much money on the thing.

The 360, on the other hand, cost me £58 new, and has taken a majority share in my TV - previously held by the PS2. I think that is the right amount anybody should have to pay for a games console. The variety of games is brilliant and some cross-platform games apparently play better. Gamerscore doesn't matter in the least, but doing the achievements is really satisfying, especially with The Orange Box.

I haven't had a handheld console since the original Gameboy, and that was when I was eight and used to play football with big stones because balls were banned in the playground. It was like an inoculation before going back to the good, hard medicine. I've played both a DS and a PSP but it's just not the same as PC or TV gaming. If I have some spare time on a train or in the park or whatever, I'd rather force myself to read. The remakes of Chrono Trigger and FFIV are tempting, but I've had my fill of CT and the voice acting of FFIV ruins it beyond recovery.

My brothers have a Wii and it's not my cup of tea either. I don't know how to describe it... it's like with the Wii you know you're pissing away time on something totally pointless, but every other console hides it better.

PS2 is still the best, obviously, but the 360 just needs a steady flow of good games each year to endear it to the same level. I can wait; there are masses of games still waiting to be played.

Disclosure: I grew up on Nintendo consoles, and I want a DS myself. However, I own none of the consoles. As for the games that are available for each--I'd say, I want a DS first, a Wii second, and a PSP third, and the other two I don't care for.

I think that the Wii and DS will be most successful, due to:
1. very large library of games (including lots of older games, thus cashing in on retro fans) (and this includes considerations of backward compatibility--strictly speaking, the PS3 has the most for any of these consoles, playing pS1 and PS2 games directly, but the Wii has the Virtual Console feature, which effectively expands its compatibility by far, and the DS has GBA titles while the PSP has no predecessor)
2. availability of unusual interfaces (the motion-sensor remote and the touchscreen)
3. the continued perception that the Wii is most "accessible" to people who wouldn't readily call themselves gamers
4. price tags, and existing reputation due to them

That's a great point. In many ways it's the main advantage. Even though I don't use it much (since I have a SNES and 64), the VC gives them a competitive edge. That is because Nintendo has been around much longer than the other companies, and that long history includes some of the greatest games of all time.

My only thought is that they aren't making an adequate effort to extend that library with current-day games. I think they are 1) missing out on growing their profits 2) allowing Sony and Microsoft to stay in the race.

Look at GTAIV and Halo 3. Both broke records in the entertainment industry in sales, both were considered games for a hardcore audience, and both were not on the Wii.

If they continue to ingore the hardcore audience, that might be a problem, except...

...these points are true, and that renders my pont useless, at least right now. They have no need to please the hardcore fans since they're making bundles from families.

But my point is, that might hurt them in the future.

Hmm, you do have a point, that they will have to tackle the growing existence of a hardcore gaming demographic.

However, for the time being, they seem to be dominating the non-hardcore group. Though Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and similar games are gradually making inroads...

Also, Nintendo should REALLY release Mother 1, 2, and 3 to western audiences.

The problem is, that in order to compete, Microsoft and Sony might start going along that route. They already have in some ways, Sony has LBP and Microsoft has those new avatars. So we might see more casual gaming in the future.

PS3 is actually not that great in terms of backwards compatibility. Some of the early versions had all sorts of bugs, to the point that many PS3 versions on the market today are actually NOT backwards compatible. I was POed when I bought FFXII only to find that it didn't work, and I'm going to have to recover my PS2 where I left it in New York. The offset to all this is that the price dropped when they removed the backwards compatibility, making the system a little more affordable.

Virtual Console is a nice little gimmick, but emulators and ROMs are all over the place for anyone who wants to get them. The only real backwards compatability feature of the Wii is with the Gamecube, but hey, at least they have a 100% success rate unlike Sony and Microsoft.

I don't know about that. I'm pretty sure that most people have no idea what those things are, much less how to use them. I don't think the VC is just a gimmick, because for people that don't understand emulators, it's how you get the classic games easily and play them.

I don't think that the Virtual Console is the tremendous advantage that y'all think it is. Sure, its selection is very good, but the bestselling download of all time on any system is actually Uno, part of XBox Live Arcade. In fact, neither XBLA nor the PSN Store are slouches when it comes to DLC. Really, we're probably putting the VC on some kind of pedastal since just about everyone here is a SNES fan.

That's true. In fact, this source reveals that sales have declined. This is probably due to the fact that those games really aren't marketed at all. And I believe that they are having trouble getting the licenses from the games and they are costing money to rate through ESRB.

But the VC games are still cheap to produce, so Nintendo is probably making pure profit of of them. So it's money in their pocket, even if sales do decline.

So I agree, not much of an advantage, but it could be if they packaged it better. I don't think they will, but they could have added content, like a making of (which is something I've wanted from games for a long time). That might be their downfall, their neglection of software.

Well, I guess, even with emulators and roms, it's still probably worth one's effort to get 3D games (which you can't really play right with a keyboard--try flying in Super Mario 64 using fixed-angle joystick correspondence to your left-right-up-down keys).

And you're right, laszlow, I forgot about XBox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network (N is "network", right?).

Yes.

You are forgetting one thing, though, it's fairly trivial to add a joypad, even an original joypad from the console, if you're savvy enough to get an emulator running in the first place. Heck, Microsoft's controllers have USB connections, via wireless dongle or wire.

Hey, I actually managed to beat Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie using a Keyboard, plus a host of NeoGeo emulated fighting games and other tricky stuff. It's a pain in the rear, but it's certainly doable.

And yes, the N stands for Network.

For me as a what you call a "true gamer", I love all three consoles for one simple little fact, they all kick butt in their own ways, but to answer the question of whom I think will come out on top as a CONSOLE, not a company, it has to be Sony's PS3. Out of the three consoles, the PS3 is the one that will be around the longest just like it's predecessor has, who plays GameCube and XBOX 1.0 anymore?, now, who still pops in their old PS2 games into their new PS3's? I know I do, well not anymore my PS3 went YELLOW, curse you technology... smile.gif

Anyways, here are my thoughts on all three consoles...

360 is with out a doubt a powerful machine, but in my eyes it was an obsolete machine ever since it was released. Yes it is obsolete, a machine that needs HD-DVD add ons, and now a BLU-ray player add on is obsolete in my eyes. Soon, WELL NOT SO SOON, will see how the 360 will fall off the radar when game makers start to go the way of the BLU-ray, leaving 360's old DVD format behind in the dark ages. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the 360 is better or worse than the other consoles, it's just that you can't ignore the fact that the 360 will not be able to live very long after 2010. The only way for Microsoft to keep up the SONY's sleeping giant is by making an XBOX 720 or 900 or 1080, I don't know whatever comes next they better hurry!

PS3 is the most powerful console ever, and that's the truth. Build in BLU ray player, super audio cd, DOLBY TRUE HD, dts digital sorround, Bluetooth and HDMI, what you didn't know? well now you do. Sure the PS3 is a bit expensive compared to the 360, but when you think about it the 360 is almost as or more expensive than the PS3. If you buy all the add ons and put together let's say a year of XBOX LIVE, and if you happen to buy the wireless thingys for the 360, the price is almost the same. The PS3 might be more expensive, at first, but in the long run you get more console for a longer period of time... unless of course you get the now infamous YELLOW LIGHT OF DEATH!!

The Wii, even though not as strong as the 360 and the PS3, it has managed to keep up, or maybe even surpass, with the two super powers, something many people used to laugh about back when the Wii was simply known as the Nintendo Revolution. It's revolutionary new ways of gaming games, he he, has brought the gaming world something it had been missing for a while, INNOVATION, and even though I still look forward for Nintendo to make this experience go even further by making it even better, I hope so, I am very proud of them for sticking to their guts and doing something nobody else would've even consider. I mean, without the Wii Controller there wouldn't have been SIXAXIS I'm pretty sure of that.

Anyhow and anyways, I love'em all!!!

I honestly think that all three of these companies can continue to exist. People have enough money and videogames have enough variety that three gaming platforms can all coexist.

I prefer the PS3 personally. 360 isn't all that bad. Not too big of a fan of the Wii. I stick with PS3 mostly because it plays all my old games and still has most of the current ones I'm interested in (a total which is notably small).

That is until 360 and ps3 start trying to take the wii's casual market and all hardcore gamers don't have a console anymore.

I doubt they'll abandon the hardcore market, even if they get into the casual market. There's still a ton of money to be made in the hardcore market, what with it being a pretty significant and pretty dedicated player group.

Well,...not exactly. If I had an X-Box, sure, but if not (and I don't), part of the appeal of emulation is that it's free (don't need to buy anything other than having a working computer) and convenient (don't need to get accessories).

I'm not sure how to answer exactly. I prefer the playstation 3. I like tekken and metal gear solid i.e. I prefer the games it has, but I wont be closed minded. The wii's motion gimick is cool if you're into that sort of thing and I haven't really played the Xbox. So you y'know, I don't really know what system will pull ahead. It's all based on personal preference as always.
