Sure, it's taking Japan by storm, but I only know two or three English-speakers that play it. Basically, it's a game where hunters (you) try to hunt large monsters (like this) to gain materials that give you better weapons and armor to hunt bigger and more dangerous monsters. You can also use a local PSP connection to have co-op multiplayer hunts. If you think that sounds like an online grindfest, then you'd be right.

But still, I'm addicted. Right now I'm playing Monster Hunter Freedom 2, and I semi-eagerly await the expansion that's coming out in a few months. The strongest monster I can beat by myself is a Kushala Daora (this guy), and the strongest monster I've beaten in a group hunt is an Ash Lao Shan Lung (this building-sized beast). The only weapons I use are great swords, long swords, dual swords, hammers, and bows. So, any other hunters here?

Not gonna' lie, I at first thought you were talking Monster Rancher and I was quite ecstatic. Then, I read on and I'm further ecstatic and wish this game came in some sorta' English format... Will it, do you know? Cause I'd love to be doin' some hunting!

I considered getting the game before, but I prioritized other games.

They exist in English... I think so, at least.

Well, the online servers for the first Monster Hunter game are down, and the PS2 version of Monster Hunter 2 never came out in the United States. If you want to play it, your best bet is to get Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for the PSP, or wait until its expansion comes out in a few months. That's what the MH fans are playing these days.

They announced Monster Hunter Portable 3 at a Capcom conference yesterday. It looks gorgeous, especially for a PSP game. I totally want to make some scaly bear armor.

Hahaha. My ears are ringing for the second time today!

I'm saddened by the lack of MH love on this board. We must do something about this! I wonder if maybe more people here have discovered the greatness in the past year.

If you haven't looked at the trailer directly above this post, do so now! There is a giant badger bear to be seen!

Although I don't own the console to play it, it's worth noting that Monster Hunter 3 comes out in the United States in a few weeks on the Wii. It's been out in Japan since last summer. MH3 (visually) looks better than just about any other Wii game. Here's a trailer for it, dated some time ago. Playing online is free for the United States and Europe.

Basically, if you're at all curious about this series and own a Wii, this is a great entry point. Kill some huge ****ing dragons.

ElPanachino and I played a goodly amount of Monster Hunter Freedom 2 over the weekend. Good times.

Also, all of you Wii owners out there owe it to yourself to try out MH Tri. Basically, Capcom is putting in a pretty big effort to get this series some fans outside of Japan, and for the first time ever the Monster Hunter online scene is strong in the West. Go out there and hunt some REAL beasts.

I'm looking into getting a PS3 soon, and Laszlow tells me I can use it to tunnel my Monster Hunter Freedom: Unite game. If this works, that means those of you with both PSPs and PS3s will have even more reason to try out Monster Hunter.

Update. I got a PS3 two weeks ago and downloaded the freeware called AdHoc Party from the PSN store. Laszlow and I have been using it to great effect in cunjunction with Skype to do hunts together on our PSPs across state lines. Anybody with a PSP (though from what I can tell there aren't that many on this board) should definitely try this if they have both systems.

Actually just finally picked up a PSP for myself and ended up getting War of the Lions and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, a game I had never played but heard good things about. Still going through the tutorials and stuff, but thus far it seems like a lot of fun! Bravo Capcom, good to see you still have the spark now and then.

If you're new to the game, you'll definitely hit some "walls" which may very well lead to you putting the game down at times. Definitely let us know if you need advice or if you wanna hunt online together.

Don't know how I missed this... trailer for MH Portable 3rd from about 2 months ago.

The first half is typical trailer material, showing weapon attacks and montages of known information. The second half shows off a bunch of new monsters, including a giant snow rabbit and volcano armadillo. Hint: I'm going to be making rabbit and armadillo armor, right after my badger-bear.

Well, has been SOME TIME since I last posted here, saying I was considering buying MHT.
I did by during AUGUST, and have 160 hours or so now.

HR50, I should add.
I need to get around to slaying ALATREON, which I pretty much gave up on.

I just joined CoN a short time ago and I was extremely excited when I saw a Monster Hunter thread because easily my two favorite series are Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy. I have played nearly every MH, have beaten every monster in each of them, and have obtained the best armors (the alatreon took me the longest, i hate that thing with a passion). If there is any evidence that I am a nerd it is because of my knowledge of MH games so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I cannot wait for Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, especially since there is a bear biggrin.gif. I'm also looking forward to fighting that thing that resembles a green yak with a long clubbed tail.

Welcome to CoN.

Lasz and I are also waiting for Portable 3. We haven't really played any since August (I've been really busy). Today we actually got on Ad-Hoc party and are currently hunting in MHFU together. It's nice to be on the hunt again.

There's another new trailer, added only a few days ago. It has a bunch of big hitters from MH3 like Deviljho and Jhen Moran, plus a bunch of color variations to other MH3 monsters. The clubbed-tail-yak-thing mentioned by World Champion is something called a "Doboruberuku" in Japanese, but will probably have a different name in the US.

Based on the new trailer it does seem like Capcom created subspecies for all the monsters in MH3 like they did for the monsters in MHFU. I am especially interested to see what the pinkish Royal Ludroth armor will look like....

I have never gotten around to getting Ad-Hoc though as a hunter I probably should. I usually just hunt with my friend. Do either of you (laszlow and ElPanachino) have MH3? I haven't played it in awhile and I feel like playing it again.

This list of bosses seems to be the final list. It's eight new monsters plus a mix of MH3 and MHFU monsters, with new color variations for several holdovers. The variations that don't have pics yet are Silver Rathalos, Gold Rathian, Black Diablos, and an Ice Agnaktor.

...I'm pretty sure that MHF2 had more than this, but it's a pretty good mix. I'm back on a MHFU kick, probably thanks to all this hype. Not gonna import, though.

Through means of my technologically advanced friend I am able to play Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on my PSP and so far it does not disappoint. It is basically as everyone had expected; MHFU plus MH Tri plus awesomeness. There is one problem though, the game is in total japanese. I have been successful to this point by using my past knowledge of monster hunter items, areas, quests, etc. but I don't know how much longer I will last until I have to start collecting rare items...without knowing the name of those items. Obviously this could be potentially problematic. Monster Hunter Wiki better get on some weapon, armor, and item translations. The bear is sadly a push over and one of the very first monsters. I only just killed the snow bunny thing (in my great jaggi armor no less, feeling like a noob) and it was interesting with its slidding around on its stomach and such. Right now I am going to build up to the red armadillo-like monster and probably attempt to make his armor if all goes well.

Also, if any of you have not seen, the final monster for MHP3 is not the giant blue lightning wolf but actually a giant gray winged beast that surrounds itself in a hurricane. Fun stuff, right? I can't really accurately describe it so look it up. I know that its ecology is on youtube.

Yeah, it's called Amatsu Magutsuchi. It's an elder dragon with storm powers whose materials make powerful water weapons. I've actually heard that it's easier than the bosses of earlier games, and the toughest post-game boss is a giant-sized Deviljho. But it's all forum talk - I'll wait until more reliable info is out before I'll stand by it.

EDIT: And by the way, I definitely won't be importing. I'm 100% sure it will receive a release in North America, and I can wait for it. It'll be quite a jump when it happens, though, since this game has such different monsters than Unite.

Ditto. In the mean time, I'm gonna enjoy my upper rank equips in MHFU and try to get some of those elite weapons I never got around to making.

I really hope that the Amatsu is better than the Deviljho. I mean come on, it flys around in a hurricane! The Deviljho just walks around trying to spit dragon breath on me and knawing on poor Popos cry.gif

On an unrelated note, I am very glad that the Monster Hunter series is seemingly starting to move away from dragon-like monsters and adding monsters of many different kinds; for example, the rabbit, the armadillo, the bear, the green-club-tailed-yak-thing, whatever the hell a Jhen Moran is, etc.

Amatsu is supposedly... not very difficult in a decent-sized group. In fact, these four cheap bastards killed him in less than two minutes. All four of them used armor and weapons that pumped up fire elemental damage and spammed Rapid Fire 4 of Flaming S with intermittent Flash Bombs.
