Strategy RPG Disgaea was a hit on the PS2 console, though not many gamers got a chance to play it, as it was in very short stock. Now, PR coordinator Nao Zook hinted towards a new Disgaea title that would be available on the DS. Though nothing concrete was announced, and it wasn't said whether it would be a remake or a new title, Ms. Zook did say, "Let me just say this... you can look forward to it!"

--------

I haven't played a Disgaea title, but many of my friends ranted and raved about it for months. I am a fan of the Strategy RPG genre, and would very much like to have a game like that for DS. I would expect that the game will likely be announced soon, as you wouldn't expect a PR coordinator to just run her mouth about something that isn't going to happen - that's exactly what she's there to prevent. Ms. Zook also works for Nippon-Ich America, so I would guess that the game will also be available in English. Nothing concrete here, but potential exciting news to come!

Hey, put the cellphone down for a while
In the night there is something wild
Can you hear it breathing?
And hey, put the laptop down for a while
In the night there is something wild
I feel it, it's leaving me

Disgaea is a power-gamer's dream. It is heavily based around grinding for that last stat point, so I don't really see it translating well to the mobile screen. They'll lose their niche and fanbase.

Then again, their fans might be as fanatical as those following Square's FF7 expanded universe.

Disgaea truly is a fun and time-eating game...until you completely burn yourself out. Power-leveling is certainly fun in its own right, and people who statgrind are surely at home. Wasting time to get to Lv 1000+ is just boring after awhile, and that's where open-endedness comes back to bite the gamer in the rear -- it's so expansive that it seems aimless. I have serious doubts about its potency on the DS, but I always support strategy games, even if I completely exhausted all interest after 200 hours and 5 transmigrations. <yawn> Nippon Ichi game engines get a little "sort samey, sort not" after awhile, at least in the PS2 games I've played.

Oh well, if I'm proven wrong, I'll kill myself leveling a Rogue up to Lv. 9999...

Update: it's a port of the original: http://rpgfan.com/news/2008/1072.html

I love Disgaea 1 and 2, but I dunno if I'll pick this up. I'll research it, think about it, see how it compares to that recent PSP port (which is supposedly very good), and then make a decision.

And as an aside, I've tried almost all the N1 games, but the only ones that can really hold my interest are the two Disgaea games. It's just exactly the right combination of intense strategy gameplay, ludicrous customization and number crunching, hilarious storyline and dialog, and offbeat character designs. I mean, I *really* want to enjoy stuff like Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom, but I just can't get into them.

I already have the PSP port of the original, and it does plenty to suit my purposes. I can't think of anything they could possibly add to entice me to buy it on the DS, too.

I'm still hoping for Disgaea 2 on the PSP someday.

Gah, the DS version is getting some extras: Four new characters. The three new hidden bosses from the PSP version are now playable characters, plus Plenair makes her first playable appearance.
