Okay, I have been thinking about this for a long time. I've always thought Narshe was pronoucesd "Narshee" but my friend Hikaroo on the other hand thinks it's pronounced "Narsh". I'm not sure now.
I'd guess I'd use the Japanese version of the name to find out what it really is, but unfortunatly, I don 't know.
^^. I'm just looking for input.

Given that it's sometimes translated as "Narche" instead, I choose to go for a compromise between the two and pronounce it in the way a German might pronounce "Narsche".  That works out sort of like "Narsh-uh".

But then, I've seen it translated as "Nalsh" as well.  Who knows?

Actually, and I have this information from a very reliable Japanese source, it's pronounced "pumpernickel".  The 'narshe' is silent, you see.

Haha, really, though... I've always pronounced it as 'narsh'.

Agreed on "narsh". Based on the spotty evidence I've seen, that's closest to the Japanese. Though the German would seem appropriate.

If it's direct Asian-to-English spelling (whichis usually what is done), based on what I know about Japanese vowels, it would be pronounced n(ah)r-shay, (short, sharp "r" sound, so it almost sounds like a short Nah)
Hyphens mean syllable break
But I think the translaters more than likely took how it is pronounced and spelled it according to English standards.

in fact, the correct pronunciation from the kana would be "nar-shuh."  the osv transliterates it as "nalsh;" however, the katakana "narushe" used specifically ADD ON the final "eh/uh" sound rather than just leaving it "narushi," which would be pronounced "narsh."  the specific addition of the final dropped katakana "e" clearly make the pronunciation "nar-shuh," although the spelling remains without the final "e" in the osv transliteration.  who knows why.

I find myself pronouncing it most often like Tiddles does, the Narsh-uh.  It just seems like a nice compromise between Narsh and Narsh-ee, and it's what I've always done.

Well, even though it seems the arguements for Narsh-uh are most believable, I think I'll still pronounce it Nar-she. It just sounds best to me. To tell you the truth, I'd never heard it pronounced otherwise.

while your at this, a problem about pronciation (and spelling too, it seems...) arises
In FF10, chocobo is pronounced 'chow-ko-bow'
wheras my and my friedns always said 'chock-o-bow'

now, try say the first one with a glaswegian/paisley accent, and you will sound daft. I dont think the rest of scotland can say it too well either... :(

and as for the narshe question? im the only person i know who owns six, but i say it 'narsh' or 'the place where its goat(aye, i say goat! its got if ye must know..) a' the snow'

whit? ahm scottish! ah cannae speak english! :E

I've always pronounced it 'Narsh' (as in rhymes with marsh). I noticed in FFVI that they used a lot of European sounding names, so I pronounced it with the silent E.

Of course it I were speaking it in regards to Japanese (or even Spanish), I would be saying 'Nar-sheh'. Although, in order to get 'nar-sheh' in Spanish, it would have to be spelt "Narsje".

*hugs Silent_Moon* I say it as Narshee too! yay! Finally someone else who does ^-^

I've heard Narsh a lot, though, and Narsh-uh from one of our staff members.

Lets no forget other names which can raise controversy!

Ill post them, and my way of saying it

Locke - I always pronounced it with a long O, like Lowk

Celes - I said cell-es, my friend called her Seal-es (if that makes sense

Kefka - I always say it with a long E like Keefka, I think now that its with a short E, but Im too used to the long to go back now.

Gestahl - Guess-Tall

Im curious as to how you guys say these names

Hmm, as for the Chocobo question from way above, I pronounce it as " Cho-ko-bo " ^^. I pronounce the O's like the letter O. I think that's how the Japanese pronounce it because their vowels are constant, they have only one way to pronounce the vowel O.

Locke - Lock, like locking a door

Celes - Cell-es

Kefka - Kehf-ka, short 'e'

Gestahl - Guess-Tall, reminds me of Gaston from Disney's Beauty and the Beast

Oh, and what about this one. Yuffie? I've heard "Yuh-fee" and "Yoo-fee". Personally I pronounce it Yoo-fee.

*hugs Elena99 back* ^.^ Yay!

Chocobo - Chahk-a-boo. The first "a" is as if you were saying "Ah, I see". The second is more like "Uh" but said quickly. It must be the Rhode Island accent.

Locke - lO-kE; pronounced like the mythological god by that name.

Celes - sell-Es

Kefka - kef-ka; short e.

Gestahl - jest-ahl; like jester and that same short "Ah" sound.

Personally my friends agreed that it was Narsh but we never agreed on the name for Celes but I've always said Seles

Celese?
Selless. :p
Like sell-less put together. :D

Why would Sabin be pronounced Suhbin? Uhm.. a and u make different sounds.
And gaw? which rhymes with caw?
try Gau, which rhymes with cow. :D
Mog? Try fog with an m. :D
Setzer? Seltzer minus the l. :D
Chocobo like Silent Moon says, chokobo. :D
And epee would probably sound like teepee. :D
(Like I can spell this stuff.)
And Ramuh. I doubt Raymoo. :p Ram-uh.
:p
Ram-uh. I thought that'd be the easiest.
Fenrir - Fen-rur. :p
Maduin I thought was Mad-win.
Tritoch - How did you get tree? Tri, as in three. :p He's got three different elemental spells, so Tri-tock.
Debilitator is said exactly as it looks,
de-bill-itator. :p
Carribbean: Kuh-rih-bee-en ;) <--- Care-ibb-ian. :p

The only ones I do differently from DP are...

Gau, which I rhyme with cow

Chocobo (unless I'm mistaking your pronunciation), which officially, thanks to FFX, sounds like "Choke uh boh"

Aegis, which I say "A (long A) ghiss (rhymes with kiss)"

The rest I agree with. :)  Even so, for the ones that they made up specifically for the game it doesn't really matter, it's everyone's choice since it's not defined anywhere.

I think you misunderstood me, Hikaroo. Where ever I put "uh" I meant the sound the schwa makes, you know, the upside-down "e" thing.

And epee is the French word for sword (and is supposed to have and accent on the second "e") but was brought into the English language to define a certain type of sword. Think of the sword they used in the Three Musketeer movie, and you have a general idea of what it is.
