It is a great system, I've had one since I was like 5. It still runs like it did 10 years ago. Its quite sad when I can beat link to the past in like a day. When 7 years ago it would take me months xD. I also love most of the games you listed.

I loved the old school SNES games so much. I grew up with them in the 90's and I could not have wanted anymore than that. It's such a darn shame that you can't find them anymore in media stores, though the only way to collect them now is either through yard sales, ebay, or downloading roms.

Indeed, I do think it is the best gaming system out there. Super Mario World, Final Fantasy 5, Final Fantasy 6, Batman Returns, Mega Man X2, Street Fighter II, Killer Instinct, Mario Kart, and so many other games helped define me as a gamer and I only find myself replaying these nowadays because nostalgia glued me to it. There were plenty of crappy SNES games but I stay away from those and play the better ones.

I totally agree. The SNES was the best system ever made. All their ideas were original while now they're grasping at straws. I still play ROMs of SNES games on my old computer, but since the old one doesn't have internet, I can't download any games that I missed, like FFVI. If it wasn't for the SNES, I wouldn't be the obsessed, nerdy, game freak that I am today.

The SNES was generally made of win. Back then, the creators seemed to spend more time on the actual game play and content than 'realistic' graphics and sound. Heck, I probably wouldn't even care about FF if it weren't for the Super Nintendo. FFVI... wub.gif

Awesome system, to be sure, but let's be honest with ourselves here. We all lust after 3D graphics and when it comes down to it, the SNES wouldn't deliver in the new age. Yes, it was amazing at the time and it's still bundles of fun (played Kirby Superstar with my friend just two days ago), but to say that every FF should be made on it is just kind of dumb. In the entertainment industry, the grass is always greener last year. What we have to realize is that we've grown accustomed to all the luxuries of the next-gen such as graphics, sounds, voicing, interactivity, innovation, etc. etc.

Trolling aside, in terms of influence and time period, yeah, it's gotta be up there among the best systems. The only thing holding it back is that it was quite as revolutionary as, say, the N64 or Gameboy.

I loved the SNES as well and I miss it. But my love for the SNES (and NES) was one of the reasons I choose to get a Wii instead of a PS3 (that and the price). I can't wait to download some of those old SNES games I loved on the Wii.

I honestly can't say that I find 3D games better than 2D. I don't play games for being revolutionary, I play them for the characters and story. I'd pick a game with poor graphics and great story over a game with great graphics and poor story any day. Good graphics are just a plus for me. That's why my favourite console is the SNES and I don't even plan on owning a Wii or PS3 for a long time.

Soooo, then, why not play them on the computer you're using now? Or download the ROM and transfer it onto the old one? unsure.gif

I'd say SNES is the greatest old gen system, myself. To use the term "greatest ever made" we'd have to wait for the current next systems to firmly (or not) implant themselve into the consumer psyche... THEN we can talk greatest ever made. It's still a topic that is going to have to be re-evaluated every time a new system comes out. That's what I think. Yep thumbup.gif

I like SNES games but I have only played the FF games on the Play Station so I have to say that my favorite is the Play Station. I once play a game for the SNES once called Allusion of Gaya for the SNES and it was very Bad so I don't like games on the SNES.

I think some of the greatest games were created on the SNES. I think that the lush graphics of Playstation sometimes get in the way of the gameplay of the games. I'm not a gamer that buys a game just because it looks good, I play games with gameplay, story, and graphics that are not necessarily good, but they compliment the story and gameplay to make an all around good game.

Every SNES game I can think of fits that description, because the height of its popularity came at a time when games didn't need to look good to be good. Despite that, games like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World had sound and visuals that complimented the gameplay, thus making the games better and timeless.

Don't get me wrong, I love the realistic graphics and the overwhelming technology associated with games today, but sometimes game makers focus too much on them. That is why I believe that those games made back then in the pre-digital era are by average better than the video games today, and the SNES has the best of those games.

Definately, I had one when I was really little, but my parent's had ended up giving it to my older cousin. Now I can't get enough of it for my emulator! FF4, FF6, Tales of Phantasia, Bahamut Lagoon, the Super Mario series... They're all great. I would definately say it's at the top of the best. After a few days playing my PS2 or Gamecube, I love going onto my computer and playing my SNES emu. I can just never get enough of it...

It's even better when you are playing a real one instead of an emulator. You wouldn't think it makes much of a difference, but the sound quality on a real SNES is MUCH better.

SNES is for sure the best console in terms of the quality (and quantity) of its games. Mario Kart, all the final fantasy's, f-zero, the Mario Brothers games, all the mega-mans, etc. That console seemed to last the longest on the market too. I remember getting my first SNES when I was 4 years old and then the PS1 didn't come into mass production until I was about 11 or 12 at least. Thing made it almost 10 years. Now theres a new line-up of consoles every 2 years. sad.gif

So yes, I would have to say that the SNES was the best console.

you cant forget about secret of mana, secret of evermore, chrono trigger, earthbound, or breath of fire. i mean even final fantasy:mystic quest although definitely wasnt one of squares best was still a fun game that took some investment of time and introduced a different style of fighting for a series that has only abandoned its trademark fighting style few times. the most recent example would be final fantasy XII but even that one has most elements of its original battle form. Just trying to shed some light on a game that isnt very fondly remembered if at all.

I was too young when the SNES was around, so my opinion is most likely invalid.

SNES is awesome. I know this from playing ROMs and GBA ports. The graphics on games like FFVI honestly exceeds that of the GBA, say, and I personally prefer perfectly made 2D sprites over crappy yet functional 3D visuals.

I wish I could find the money or the guts to use eBay. Unfortuantly, I've had to many bad experiences with pirate games/never-arriving orders for my liking, and so I'll have to wait for the Wii for a true SNES gaming experience.

Finally, to avoid accusations of trolling, I DO like a good 3D game, and I think that when they're made with enough effort and time, they're excellent. *points at FFX, Star Wars: Battlefront, TimeSplitters*

Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Pilotwings, Gemfire, Contra 3: The alien wars, and Top Gear 2 were the prime sources of my existence from late elementary to middle school.

Super Metroid in particular. That game taught me how stay up all night and play video games. I duct-taped over my power lights so in a quick moment, i could hit the TV, lay down on the floor, and pretend I was sleeping. I also used to set my alarm for 3am, stay up til 11pm, sleep, get up, and play til I heard my mom's alarm go off, then I'd shut off the TV, and lay back down. It sounds like a lame way to go about it, but I told my mom about doing it about a year ago (i'm 21 now), and she was flabbergasted that I had done it, she was entirely clueless. I got Super Metroid for my birthday in 1994, and it took me 27 days to beat it (which seemed like a feat for a 9 year old.), now I can do it in 2 hours... lol.

Yeah, SNES rules. The only downside is all those FF games. To this day, if you can find a copy, they're like $40-$50 used. And I NEVER saw them brand new. I really didn't learn to appreciate FF games until my buddy showed me this sword-wielding wierd-haired dude on his new Playstation. The rest is history.

the Super Nintendo is much better than any repetitive Xbox game, or PS2 games. The super nintendo along with the original nintendo sytem, revolutionized on what could be done with video games. I think that 3D games are alright, but if you think about it, there not doing anything original. Most of the 3D games out there are overly violent, repetitive, and boring. I simply dispise the XBOX, and the PS3 because there ideas are in the box. There is no gap between controller development with the two companies, they still stick to the "b" button and arrow key basics.with this said i give koodos to the Nintendo Wii ( not the game cube, or N64 a.k.a, the worst system ever created mad.gif ) for the fact that they said "good by 90's, hello future!", with there revolutionary controllers. With this all said, i stay away from all the lame expensive systems, and i am quite satisfied with my super nintendo, because i choose to play something original, not over done and overly violent. So with all this said, i hate XBOX, and i am in full dept to Nintendo in generally for there classics. Thanks! wub.gif

You can get then for less than that, in fact they seem to be coming down in price with the release of the GBA versions. At my local overpriced used videogame store, their price for FF6 was $60. I got my copy of FF6 from them for $30 at a half price sale (which I still think was a great deal.) However, FF6's price is now $25, and FF4's is $20 (unfortunately Chrono Trigger and Earthbound are still as expensive as heck.)

I used to think that I would never get my hands on any of these rare games, but honestly it just takes patience.

I just bought another SNES because my old one broke. While moving a friend dropped it pretty hard and it hasn't worked since. It was surprising to me because those things are built like bricks! Most weren't super sensitive to drops and the like. I still have all of my classic games though, I even managed to find some hard to find ones. I still play super metroid every week or so and my SNES gets played more than any other system I own. Second would be the NES but the SNES is definetly the best console ever... The best games and some of the best gaming memories can be found in the old SNES.

I totally agree. The SNES was "one" of the best systems ever made. All the games named above I played and loved as a child, but there was one other game in my life too. Me and my frined were addicted to Wolfensiein 3-D for the SNES. Man,...we would play it all day long trying to get the the final floor, totally ignoring the passwords because we didn't want to use them.

We just did it over and over and over again. Till this day, I still am playing the game and never made it to the final floor (how irritating those little bugger are, but the soldiers really aren't what you would call "little").

Here in Poland it was never possible to buy a Super Nintendo because of the communism. All we had was Pegasus, a Soviet alternative. You could play all the SNES games on it I think, but it had no memory. You simply couldn't save a game on it. So my only experience with SNES is by playing on an emulator. And I love those games. FFIV, FFV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger and such are absolutely great. And, to be honest, I liked them better than most of 3D games I played. I liked the graphics in Chrono Cross or FFIX, where the maps were painted and only the sprites were 3D, but I just simply can't switch to a situation where the map is turning along with you.

Yeah. I guess SNES is great :]

I don't want to say it was the best ever made, but after pondering the topic for a while, I realized that I couldn't think of a better one.
