It's not supposed to be easy. I've manipulated luck via my emulator so much that it's unholy, but I still haven't gotten myself a pink tail.
If I recall correctly, it's just about a 1/64 chance to encounter a group of puffs, and then a 1/256 chance to get a pink tail drop. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) Multiply the two fractions to get the chance of running into it in any battle in that cave. (But at least you use better grammar than the person who started the 'i hate chocobos' thread.) If you use the "alarm" item (the one that causes an immediate random encounter) you are guaranteed to fight the PPs. I'm assuming that's what you're doing. I did the same thing; unfortunately, it was on a PSX Chronicles game, and I really didn't feel like resetting over and over again to get them to drop the tail. STUPID TAIL.
I really hate how they confuse everyone in your party, too. -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. Eternal Sleep, Track 1-1: The Blue Planet |

I believe it's 1/64 for both the tail and an encounter. Multiply together and it's 1/4096 chance of getting one. However, you fight five per battle and each one has a chance of dropping an item. How this changes the math... I'm too lazy to figure it out.
Alarms are great, too bad any enemy that can drop them at the end of the game has a 1/64 chance of dropping them. Best to just stick with the pink puffs. Which is why it's suggested to stock up on alarms when you have the chance. -------------------- This is my world: (Got my second chapter up, 3rd Chapter about 80% complete) http://www3.sympatico.ca/daniel876/homepage.html |

Comment on 'Alarm'...As someone has said before (I think it's Dark Paladin), it's not 'Alarm', which dispels 'sleep' status, but 'Alert', which calls random encounters.

Actually, running into the Pink Puffs was the easy part. Set the turbo speed on and just go back and forth tapping the left and right buttons while keeping close tabs on the "R" and "L" buttons so that I can run away from any non-Pink Puff battle. Worked so well that I actually ran into the Puffs twice; the first time I accidently ran away from them before I realized what they were. As soon as I got into another battle with them though, I started taking them down, which brings me to something interesting. My characters started going Beserk and just using physical attacks. I couldn't control them. Not all at once mind you. I noticed it when Rydia kept attacking when I was specifically waiting for her turn to come around so that I could whip out an Ice 3 or something and nail all the Puffs at once. Then Cecil went all beserk on me, then Rosa, then Edge. Now Rosa I had cast a cure spell on everybody (which she successfully cast) but after that action I had no more control over her. Just thwackety-thwack she went with her arrows.
In any case, I used the save state option just before Edge delivers the final blow to the last Puff, so that way I could simply restart from that point (the end of the battle) if I did not recieve a tail at the end. That's what I was doing for over an hour: constantly reloading the same save state to try and get the battle to end with me getting a tail. It never happened. I noticed that Edge delivered the exact same amount of damage every time, as did the Pink Puff (it attacks Kain right after the save starts/right before Edge attacks). So is the end result (item dropped or not) pre-determined as well? Will my tactic (eventually) work? If not, then at what point does the game determine whether an item will be dropped or not? Edit And btw, I am using neither the Alarm or Alert item (whichever it is called). As far as I am aware, it is not present in the US version of FFIV, of which I am playing a copy of. I don't know about the actual programming, but it seems a lot of the random decisions are made right after a battle. If you save a state after a fight, you will always encounter the same battle the same number of steps away. A reloaded battle always goes the same way if you input the same commands (I think, it does in some of the other FF games). Not sure what the best tactic is then. I doubt it's finishing the same battle over and over again, and I also doubt it's saving after a battle, since the next one (and presumably the drop as well) is already determined. Any one else with hacking experience have any input? I've wondered about this myself.
btw, I've never even attempted to get a pink puff tail, the odds are too ridiculous and I'd rather accumulate my luck towards winning the lottery. Also, try to avoid double-posting in the forums, certain jar-dwelling trolls don't like it too much... Moderator Edit Hey, I just enforce what's in the rules. I tried getting a tail last time I played the game, but i was too lazy in the giant and didnt stock up on alerts, i got maybe 20, and from what i can tell you need at least a couple hundred to make it worthwhile. thus is the problem with ff4 though, it's damn hard to get the rare drops, fighting like 4,000 battles to get a tail is pretty ridiculous

I have a weird question. I have fought Flan Princesses in Soul of Rebirth on Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls. Are they the same as Pink Puffs? I know its off-topic, but whatever. Anyways, I save-stated the second I ran into a group of Pink Puffs(3 of 'em) and then beat them with Meteo and Bahamut. It took me about 20 minutes to get one of them to drop PinkTail...

I fought pink puffs once.. without cheatingness or an emulator.
I thought they were awesome. But since half my guys were berserk I couldn't play around fighting them. I still thought the Chocobo music was awesome... I didn't get the tail... -------------------- I love the SNES Final Fantasy games. I think PS2s are over-rated. and priced. Agent Muffin signing out... |

The first time I played the game (as FF2 on SNES), I fought the pink puffs without having any idea what was going on, and won a tail from the first fight.
I've never gotten one since on any playthrough, despite hours and hours of trying. Go figure. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

I've owned the game since 1992 and have encountered Pink Puffs only once. I recorded the event even, but alas, no tail.

No thoughts from someone who's cracked the game code? I'm still wondering when it's decided what item a creature drops (if any) after the end of a battle.

Wow! I must be pretty lame. I did it the old fashioned way where you walk around and hope it's the battle with the pink puffs. After about 2 1/2 hours and 3 battles with them, I decided that it's not THAT important.

Quote (sax_russell_the_green @ 29th April 2005 03:41) No thoughts from someone who's cracked the game code? I'm still wondering when it's decided what item a creature drops (if any) after the end of a battle. The items a creature drops are determined when the battle starts. So if you make a save state after every battle, when you finally encounter a pink puff, if you don't get a pink tail, just reload the save state and try again.(the battle will be the same enemy party, but will have different items and AI) Making a save state during a battle is useless, as the battle's drops and AI has already been determined. Anywho, I have tested this theory, not for the pink puffs, but for items like the mage summon and Zues gauntlet...it does work. If you don't have an emulator, your out of luck i'm afraid. Edit I've just tested it, and this does work on the ffIv translated rom, the only problem is, it's more than twice as rare, since it's the expert version. Edit Ok, i;'ve got the adamant armor... now the question dares to be asked...Can I get another pink tail so I have adamant armor for cain? or am I stuck with one. I'm glad to see that the trick worked for you, Bulbonius! This isn't the same as getting a Pink Tail 'the real way', but it's resourceful nonetheless.
To answer your question, it should be possible to get a second tail; after all, if cheaters like me can get 99 of them by typing in a code, then surely you should be able to get two of them. Unless you use a code you can only get one Pink Tail ever. This is denoted by the yellow highlight over the text when you recieve it. It is considered a 'key' item that cannot be gotten rid of except through storyline.
By the way, I love Adamant Armor. I put it on Rydia and Meteo only does around 450 damage to her at level 99. Unfortunately even Adamant can't fix up Edge's horrendously low magic defense. -------------------- Every heart returns to darkness... |
