I like to name at least a few of my characters...  I name Locke myself (duh!) and make those I'm going to have in my party names of friends.  I try to keep family in-game the same as family in real life.

I don't know if it's stupid or whatnot, it just helps me immerse myself in the game, I guess...

I like to name some of my chars. When i first played the game i was into Goldeneye(N64) so i name Terra into Xenia. Edgar was Goddy thus Sabin was Satin. Umaro = Dumass (he speaks in third person to Mog =P) and Setzer = Gambit.

I keep the original names in all my new games, fixing the capitalization of them if they're in ALL CAPS (like FF3us).  'Cuz, it looks to me like they're always yelling at each other.

TERRA: Hey, LOCKE, come here for a sec.
LOCKE: You don't have to yell my name, TERRA.
TERRA: o.O  Sorry, LOCKE. That's just the way they made all our names.  o.o;;
LOCKE: Whatever you say, TERRA.  o_ô
EDGAR: If you guys are done yelling at each other, we can go get SABIN now and meet up with CELES.
TERRA: O.o
LOCKE: o.O

Yeah, I rename people.  Currently I'm trying to work in the cast of SEL because Kefka and Eiri look very similar.  First time I played, Terra became Princess Jennifer.  I think that says it all...

I sometimes change the names of the characters. These are the only ones I tend to do it with..

Cyan=Tetsuo
Mog=Kappa (yeah, i know its the name of the imp guy)
Shadow=Clyde
Umaro=Ungah
Sabin=Kuma (I thought 'bear' fit)

Usually I name Terra after me, because she's just soooooo cute! I used to name Locke after my brother, because he's a thief... ^-^ I'm horrible. :D I thought April was a suited name for Celes and Edward for Edgar. :P

Nah, I usually leave the names the way they are.  That's the way it was meant to be.

I used to name my own characters untill I ran out of good original ideas.  So now when I make up names I think there all stupid.

i dont rename characters usually, but if i did name them anythign other than the original names, it would be silly names that in certain combos, form secret messages...or swap names, IE cyan is called Terra and vice-versa leading to hillarious problems. or four people called bob.

Nope, all the names are cool! I just keep 'em the way they are.

My gimmick is themed renames, but here's a message for you.  You know how the names go across on the "select your party" screen?

Terra - Magic
Locke - Doesnt
Edgar - Kill
Sabin - People
Celes - Kefka
Shadow - Kills
Cyan - People

Much better than talking about gunning down Relm in cold blood, neh?  Feel free to replace Kefka's name with any bad-ass mage of your choice.

I don't like to change their names normally, unless I'm extremely bored. And I only change one or two, just to be funny. (Like switching Celes and Terra's names.) One thing that I saw in the walkthrough for FFVI that I thought was funny that I do sometimes is giving Relm the Moogle Suit and naming her Mog.
On my new game I just started however, I renamed the characters as follows:
Terra - Caller (Because she reminds me of Rydia from FFIV)
Locke - Thief
Edgar - Archer
Celes - WhiteM (For White Mage)
Mog - Dancer
Sabin - Monk
Shadow - Ninja
Umaro - Brsker (For Berserker)
Strago - BlueMg (For Blue Mage)
Gau - BskBlM (For Berserker/Blue Mage)
Relm - Trainer
Cyan - Knight
Setzer - TimeMg (I sometimes have him in my party, and he uses Vanish a lot, so I thought that it was appropriate)
Gogo - Mime [We saw that one coming, huh?]

Like Zephir, I don't like the names in capitals. Other than that, I change Umaro in Groarr, or Grooar, or GROARR : it really suits him...

I don't rename them most of the time,just keep the original Cayane,Mash,Tina,Lock and so on...I do rename Tina as Terra sometimes though,just for the fun of it.

I always name my characters. I feel lazy if I don't. Not that I dislike the original names though. It's just that it feels more personal if I do. Sometimes I rename them all completely, like I did in FF6. And sometimes I only change their names a little, like I did in FF9. For example: Zidane - Zidd, Vivi - Vivix, Eiko- Eiki...etc.

I name my characters if I dislike the original names. But there are two names that I always use: Amido (Male) and Alisa (Female). I love these two names, look at my username.

I virtually always rename my characters, and also hate ALL CAPS.  Last time on FF6 I renamed everyone except Gau (just because).  I either give them my personal favorite names, names I make up, words or sounds I think are hilarious, or just change the spelling.

I always name my characters. Because I think the original names are boring and it puts a personal touch to the character if you name them yourself...

The first time I played the game, I renamed most of the characters, but not all of them. Let me see if I can remember the names I used...also, my version's names were slightly different, which might have affected my choice.

Tina = Aeriel
Lock = Locke
Edgar = Joseff
Mash = I can't remember, but I said to myself, "Mash?? There is NO WAY I'm allowing anybody named Mash in my party!"
Celes = Niamhe, pronounced "Neeve". My thought process here was based off of the "spirit as pure as snow" phrase. I thought of snow, and remembered that "snow" in Spanish is "nieve", so I tried to think of a name that sounded like that, and came up with the Gaelic name Niamh, and then just added an "e" for effect. I'm weird like that.
Cayenne = Shiryu. I wanted him to have a Japanese name, dammit!
Shadow = Shadow. What can I say, it works.
Gau = I can't remember. I think it was Jaguar.
Setzer = Ash
Relm = Jaya
Strago = Luther. I dunno, he sorta looked like a Luther to me.
Mog = Mog
Umaro = Arktos. Sort of a cross between the root word for "bear" and something that sounded like "arctic".
Gogo = Key

And there ya have it. Now ask me what I named my chocobos in FFVII. *giggle*

i rename them EVERY time i play. however i get completely THRASHED by many people for this. im sorry, but i do not like the names given, and i feel that the game gives you the privledge of renaming as a way to further customize the game.

I usually don't but I did in two games. In my last game I renamed Locke to Ron, and Celes to Sarah. In a game 4 years ago I named all my characters by their abilities. Sabin was Blitz, Gau was Rage, Shadow was Throw, etc.

Like I renamed Sabin to Mash 'cause Mash sounds cooler I think.

i90east: that's a rather interesting idea. Let's see: I don't think you get to name Locke "Capture", Cyan "Swdtech", Setzer "GP Rain", Relm "Sketch" or "Control". So what did you name Cyan, Relm, and Umaro?

Gogo: Gilor or Gil or Adam or Mary

Or how about calling everyone the same (boy's and girl's) name, such as Kelly or Garet?
