28. Gotta Catch 'Em All

This is one of several optional places to visit in the Underworld. You can visit them at any time. The sooner you visit, though, the larger dividends they will pay. I suggest going just after you attach the drill to the Falcon, therefore, to get in as early as possible. Before coming here, it is very highly suggested that Rosa have learned both

Float and

Wall.

The Cave of Summons lies on the solitary island slightly northwest of the Sealed Cave. When you enter, Rydia will tell you this is where she came from, and that perhaps the summoned monsters would be of some assistance to your plight against Golbez. The glowing orange spots you see inflict damage if you step on them. The way to nullify them is having Rosa cast

Float on everyone. The float status goes away whenever you go into another room, so you'll have to do it every time you enter a new section, but it's worth it to keep your HP up. Don't forget that you can levitate everyone at once from the status screen, to save MP. Head to the right and up to get a treasure chest. Then head to the left and see the hidden path that leads to another, better treasure. Head back from whence you came and head to the path that leads down. There's another minor item treasure to the right. Otherwise, head left.

Make sure to be floating again before you move in the next room. When you come to two paths, the one down and to the right leads to another small treasure. Next, take the path up to continue on. There's a cabin in the chest to the left. Get it if you want, then head to the path on the right that leads to the next room. Again, make sure you're floating before you take off. As you move around, you should see from the holes in the floor what resembles a town structure. Find the next door and you'll make it there. Again, fancy RPG effects for 1991, yes?

As you head down the path, you see a hidden path that looks like it's leading to the solitary treasure. In fact, that's there to trick you. It's an unfinished path that leads to a dead end. The center path leads up to the town's entrance. But you want that treasure first, don't you? Head to the right and get the chest. Then you should see the hidden path. Get into it, head up and claim the chest there, then down and around to get the treasure chest you saw before. I will warn you that one of the chests is a monster-in-the-box with a very difficult fight.

Once you've pilfered all the treasures, head into town. It's a good thing you have Rydia. Thanks to her, none of these monsters will attack you. Walk around and grab the treasures you see, and talk with some of the monsters nearby. Head down to the next floor and have a look around. The first building you see is the item shop and inn. At 1200 gil a night, that's a bit steep. If you can't afford it, there's a save point nearby where you can use a

Tent or

Cabin. The next building on the left contains a pair of treasure chests and said save point. Best save your game before continuing. Head out and go down. Bypass the library that has the chocobo standing outside of it and head for the weapon and armor shop to beef up your offense and defense. Stock up on the arrows they sell here—they will be very useful later. You probably saw on the floor below a set of treasures and wonder where you go to get them. Head back to the very first teleporter that brought you into the town. Head down the stairs to the next platform where the purple-hooded monster is walking around. Check the corner of the edge that jaunted out on that platform. The teleporter is on the same invisible line as the first transporter. When you're set, head into the library. If you take time to read some of the tidbits you get from the books, it may prove to be slightly helpful. Head down the stairs and then onto the gray transporter. You'll find you're in the presence of the king and queen of the summoned monsters. If you listen to what some of the monsters were saying, you'll know that before you can ask the king for help, you'll first have to battle Queen Asura. Believe me, it's no small task.

	At the beginning of this section I suggested you have learned Wall. Asura has a couple of moves, but only one that damages, and that is a normal mediocre damaging attack. Otherwise, she'll shower herself with Cure3, Armor, and Life1. When Rosa comes up, have her cast Wall on the queen so her curing reflects off her and onto the party. The effects of reflection wear off with time, so you'll probably have to do it more than once. While she can't cure herself, have Cecil and Edge smack her down with their weapons. Because the queen reflects magic, Rydia will resort to using only her summons. Try to mix it up between Ifrit and Titan. As long as Asura isn't able to cure herself, the battle will be a success. Keep in mind that she does have an exorbitant amount of HP, so the battle still might take a couple minutes. One of the challenges you may want to inflict upon yourself is taking out the queen without the assistance of Wall. It's quite possible and a good challenge if you're up for it.

After the battle, Rydia will have the ability to summon

Asura when needed. This is a great summon for Rydia because now it gives her a potential heal-all spell if Rosa is previously engaged at a given moment. When you summon Asura, her three heads will spin and a different effect will be given for whichever it lands on. The normal, pretty face will result in a dose of curing for all. The mad, red face will cast

Armor on everyone. And the happy, purple face will revive anyone who since has died.

Before conferencing with the king, head back and rest up at the inn and save it at the save point. Head back to the royal chamber and talk to the man next to Asura. He'll tell you that you won't win with strength, that you need spirit as well. In a test of strength and spirit, he challenges you to fight.

	The battle with this god of water will make the battle you just had with Asura seem like a day at the beach. Now there's still a beach, but it's hurricane season. Leviatan has two stances, we'll call them open and closed - the difference is in his position, and you'll notice the difference right away. He starts off closed, but opens up right away. This is where he pulls off his potential coup de grâce, Big Wave. It punishes your party for a fair amount of damage. He'll then revert back to his closed stance where he casts Ice2 and slugs you with his normal attack at will. Leviatan has a crazy amount of agility, meaning he can pull off multiple moves before any of your characters can bust out consecutive attacks. The strategy is simple enough, however. Have Cecil lay into the serpent with his sword attack. Levy's big weakness, obviously being of water element, is lightning. So have Edge cast Blitz for some hefty damage. Edge doesn't have a lot of MP, so when he runs out, don't waste an Ether1; just have him attack with his swords. Rydia will alternate between blasting him with Bolt2 and Ramuh. The combo of Edge's Blitz and Rydia's lightning attacks are quite the potent one-two punch, so keep it coming. Rosa's job is obvious, and that's to make sure everyone is top notch in HP. Keep this going for a dozen turns or so and he'll be no match for you. Take heed that, like his wife, Leviatan has a load of HP, so it might take few times going through the lineup before he goes down.

After this battle, Rydia accepts the ability to summon the king of summons. When summoned, Leviatan drenches the entire field with his tsunami, rendering the targets with huge water damage.

Now that you have the assistance of both Leviatan and Asura, it's time for you to head out of the cave and onto the next stage in your journey.
