Unsung Story - the Spiritual Successor to FFT
Matsuno is working in conjunction with the American studio PlayDek, which recently has worked on iOS and mobile versions of several popular card games and board games. In addition to the strategy RPG Unsung Story, PlayDek intends to release a companion digital card game set in the same world as Unsung Story. The KickStarter has a base goal of $600,000 US (which it will certainly reach, as it has over $150,000 in less than a day), but it has stretch goals reaching as high as $3.2 million. If certain stretch goals are met, then new talent will join Unsung Story's creative team (including Final Fantasy Tactics music composer Hitoshi Sakimoto) and the RPG will be ported to additional systems.
Currently, Unsung Story is planned to be released on iOS devices, Android devices, PCs, and Macs in the summer of 2015. If certain stretch goals are met, then Unsung Story will also appear on the PS Vita ($1.8 million stretch goal) and the 3DS ($2.8 million stretch goal). I know that many of you CoN members are indifferent towards KickStarter efforts, but come on. The creator of Final Fantasy Tactics wants to make another strategy RPG. I couldn't help myself.

I was going to post this news today myself! Or make DP do it. I don't know that I should be really interested in this, because the biggest part of what I loved about FFT was the setting and characters, and neither of those can be on the table for this since Ivalice and the characters are property of Squenix, not Matsuno. Even so, I'm mulling over throwing in a bit of cash because I suspect the resulting game would still be pretty good, and having it available for PC would be just fine with me.

That was a pretty easy sell - it looks like it has fantastic potential!

I am not really interested in this man and what he has done to the Final Fantasy Series. Though I love what he did with Final Fantasy Tactic...Matsuno was the first to rob the Final Fantasy Series and destroy the heart and soul of the series and use the Final Fantasy Brand name to turn insert a game what would have completely failed otherwise. He along with many Japanese Directors in the 00s were known for failed RPGs in 90s with maybe one or two successful games and later they were given the keys to ALL the major Japanese RPG series they and ruined them one by one. Matsuno was also known for starting a Civil War within the production room and Square in general with him and his failed Quest team of misfits not worthy of the series between former Quest failures and the true Final Fantasy team. After his Heart Attack due to pushback from the old staff not accepting Quests inferior demands and him leaving it has never been the same with some insane man pushing Lightening who the general public still refuses to accept. Back when FF12 was in production Matsuno tried to tie his Vagrant Series, Final Fantasy 12, and Tactics to his gaming series and said he always imagined that these worlds were tied together but years later and recently after failure, after failure of his current games the fraud and liar that he is... he then claims these worlds were never meant to be connected and the Vagrant Series was never meant to be apart of Ivalice. Now it seems he is making a 'SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR' and again trying to tie his upcoming and soon to be another failure to his belt to the Final Fantasy Series to bring people over. If there is one man deserving the title of Final Fantasy Director it has to be Naoki Yoshida. Though he is from the Dragon Quest series you'd expect Enix and him to try to insert Dragon Quest elements in the Final Fantasy Series as a final insult but he did not. He stayed loyal and true and made it feel like a Final Fantasy Game. Let Matsuno make his dungeon crawling failure I won't be giving him any of my money though.

Speaking of JRPG kickstarter projects of interest, anyone know what's happening with Project Phoenix?

Well, this escalated... slowly. http://kotaku.com/unsung-story-is-a-660-00...ster-1732312002

Huh. Well, in the meantime, if anyone's interested in a game that plays a bit like Final Fantasy Tactics, do check out Rime Berta.

Yeah... I backed this. I can't remember how much for, and I can't remember when I stopped giving a shit either. It was clear for a while that this had died, and the intermittent updates lost my interest a while ago. If it ever gets made, I'll take my backer copy, but I'll probably never play it. Eh, live and learn. Edit: LIke Galsic below, I also backed on the understanding that I was taking a gamble. Despite my apparent bitterness above (I'm just naturally bitter. Sue me), I'm consequently fairly indifferent about the whole thing.

The most recent updates state that there are still plans for going forward. You'd think, from all the reactions, though (including that Kotaku article), the game's development's completely changed course. I'd rather believe that single-player plans are still intact, and that I can still get a kickass game out of all this. Then again, I went into this project believing that it (like any KS project) was a gamble, and donated accordingly. Maybe I can afford to be more optimistic than some of the backers out there.

I've backed like seven Kickstarter projects, and one of them has died, and it wasn't this one.

Three, goin' on four, months since PlayDec's last update (or even login to their KS account, apparently). I think I'm ready to write this one off. Maybe something'll come of this eventually, but from these guys, I won't be expecting much. Thankfully, I didn't put a whole lot into the KS campaign. Feel sorry for those who poured three or four figures into it, though.
