The DS goes on a Dragon Quest...or 3

Dragon Quest
Square-Enix's penchant for remaking their most popular games has been obvious since Final Fantasy III appeared in glorious 3D on the Nintendo DS. In fact, all of the 8- and 16- bit have found their way onto one of Nintendo's handhelds, with a totally new remake of FFIV also on its way. With our favorite series apparently tapped out, what's next?

The answer is SE's other RPG series: Dragon Quest.

According to screenshots from Shonen Jump, remakes are underway for Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI. It appears that graphics will be redone in the vein of FFIII/FFIV.

Will these games make it out of Japan? Square-Enix isn't saying. The series has never been as popular in the United States as it is in Japan, but some of the more obscure series titles have made its way here--Rocket Slime is already available on the DS, with a Wii title and another DS title on the way. Until we have a press release, though, here's hoping!

No, you completely misunderstood.

There are already two Dragon Quest games confirmed for release in the United States in the future: one for the DS, one for the Wii. There's already a DS title available.

These three games are confirmed for the DS in Japan. No word yet on a North American/European release.

laszlow V is my favorite DQ game, so I am definitely hoping that we get it over here one way or another. I mean... you get to name more than one character! EGAD!

laszlow Hm... the teaser site seems to indicate that they're presenting the three as the Zenithian / castle in the sky trilogy. We always knew that DQ IV, V, and VI were loosely related, but might S-E be considering adding dialog or sidequests to strengthen the connections? I'd totally be up for that.

Well, I'll probably buy all three of them anyway. I never had the endurance to finish DQ VI, but IV and V and my third-favorite and favorite in the series, respectively. We'll see how this goes down.

Lord Bob Bree Blagh... Seeing how Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is coming to the US, I wouldn't be surprised if these made it here, too. At least, I hope so.

Also hopefully, they won't be made easier. They will be, but I can still hope.

EDIT: Had pronoun problems.

I dunno about that. I think that the DS version of FF III was actually a little trickier than the original, as they nerfed Ninjas and Sages a whole lot, downscaled the power of most of the weapons and armor, and made the final sequence of dungeons balls-hard and without any save points. These three DQ games'll definitely get a modern makeover, but I doubt that they'll lose much in the way of difficulty.

NeoEx-Death I've only played Dragon Quest V (in japanese) for the SNES without even understanding one bit of the text in the game. I got the rom and patched it to change the dialogue from jap to english. And it is a pretty sweet game.

Also I've played just bits of III, but V for now is my favorite DQ game that I tried. I hope the re-releases turns out well.

laszlow The teaser site was updated last week, with the DQ IV section showing off some more screenshots, character profiles, and chapter profiles.

Also, on another note, DQ IX's shipping date got pushed pack from TBA 2007 to TBA 2008. the DQ IV remake is scheduled for a 2007 release, though. Still no word on an English release of any of the upcoming DQ games on the DS, except for DQ Monsters: Joker.
